Whoever started this thread is a zombie with no brain! Part 2:Electric Bugaloo. Directed by Brock Landers.

Okay, Brock's note on the "Good Films" thread got me thinking (a rare treat, indeed!) That, and this 28 Days Later hoopla, ties in nicely. ...plus, I love zombie films as a genre in itself. ...But this is not the point of the thread now before you.

My point is this. Quite often, critics tout George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead as a superior film to his classic Night Of The Living Dead. Sure, Dawn is a satire of 70's consumerism, albeit a jokey, ham-fisted one (at a time when many films were already taking on consumerism), but Night takes on racism in a much more effective manner - and at a time when the issue of racism was very touchy indeed. It is also scary, which Dawn is not. Add in the fact that it was shot on a much lower budget, in black & white, with cheaper (yet much more effective - read "realistic") special effects, had a better story, writing, acting, etc., and you have a better film.

Thoughts? Which do you think is better, and why?

I can almost hear the tapping from Brock's ivory keys all the way from the UK. Personally, I've never seen NOTLD. DOTLD, used to be my favorite film as a kid. Then I watched it about a year ago (the director's cut) and found it to be very dull in the middle section. The bookends of the film were still good, but that's all. I'm not going to over analyse the film, because I want to remember it the way I did when I was about twelve.

Okay, fair enough, but do yourself and rent the original.

Oh, and since you loved Dawn so much, I'll hit you with this: I've shopped in that mall. Whee!

Was that nurse still there with the purple face? I found her a little sexy in a kinda necrophilia sort of way.

Hey I've been drunk in Manchester before, so there... and anyhow, I love Dawn of the Dead better than any other zombie film, thanks in part to Tom Savini's superior make-up effects and the whole ambiance with the music in the mall... and I saw 28 Days Later on Friday and the music is the same at times and totally reminiscent of Dawn ofthe Dead in that it builds slowly and blasts in the end... long musical pieces, like when he awakes in the hospital until he meets the survivors, etc... although other than that, I wasn't all that impressed as a zombie film...

To this day however, Fulci's "The Beyond" is my all-time favorite zombie film...

i've yet to see all of the original. but found dawn to be a bit unenjoyable. whats great about al the films is that they subliminaly deal withs trong issues, like tuffy said racism. day of the dead delt with sexism, dawn was more of just a romp to see what they could do with a higher budget i guess. i think these series has the ebst specil effects for zombies ever, along witht he return series.
but which is better, hmm.
well night of the living dead was shot on a much lower budget, and it was a b-flick; so the fact that it succeeded puts it way up there. but day had much more to work with. if i had to pick one outta all the series, it would probably be dawn of the dead.

wait a minute, was dawn of the dead in the army base, or the mall?

Dawn is the Monroeville Mall, just outside of Pittsburgh.

And Tom Savini - when I first met him at a friend's house (New Year's Eve 1999) - introduced himself to me thusly:

Savini: Hi, I'm Tom Savini.

Tuffy: Hi. I'm Tuffy.

S: Tom Savini. Perhaps you've seen my work in film?

T: I... don't think so...

S: Did you see From Dusk Till Dawn? (which was then recent)

T: The vampire flick? Yeah, I saw that! Were you an extra?

S: (annoyed) No. I played the character 'Sex Machine'... I wore the codpiece with the pistol in it...

T: Um...

S: I was the first to get killed!

T: Sorry, I don't remember... Hey, my wife's over there. I was just bringing her a

S: (interrupting) Did you see Dawn of the Dead? I was a biker in that. I did the special effects makeup!

T: Yeah! Okay, yeah! Wow. That's cool! There were three of those. Yeah. (forgetting myself) The first one was the best. Scarier. Better effects... (Open mouth, insert foot.)

S: I wasn't involved in that one.

Heh. oops.

Anyway, yeah, that's a bit embellished/paraphrased, but still pretty much the gist of the conversation. His fiance was this hot little gothic number though. Her arm was in a cast 'cause she'd put it through a mirror the day before - taking a swing at Tom. This information she offered freely and without prompting. She slipped my wife he phone number. Rowr.

theyre shooting the remake of dawn at a mall near me, im gonna hassle the mall owner until he puts me in contact witht he film makers, so i can be an extra zombie!!! wooooooooo

Never saw the third one, actually... I disliked Dawn upon first viewing that much.

I thought the remake of Night was completed last year... It was all Savini and no Romero, or something. And, really, remaking Night is like remaking King Kong; an exercise in mass-stupidity.

Are you thinking of 1990's Tom Savini-directed color remake?

Dawn of The Dead is the BEST fucking film ever made. It stands up better every year, being prescient as fuck at the time. The shopping mall skit shit is really amazing. I mean, TELL me that's not how we live now, especially 25 years on from that film.

"They're after us. They know we're still in here."

"They're after the place, that's all. This was an important place in their lives. they don't know why, they just remember."

They're remaking it in Canada. Guy who wrote the live-action Scooby Doo script wrote the thing.

Oh, joy.

Tuffy, sorry to say it, but they are remaking King Kong. CG and all, most likely.

But luckily, it's our favorite Peter Jackson in the director's chair.

I've seen all 3 Dead movies and I honestly can't say which is best. I enjoy each one so much I don't even like to compare them. What Night says about rascism, Dawn says about consumerism, and Day says about the millitary and lab experimentation.

I really think Day of the Dead gets overlooked way too much. I felt it had all the ingredients that made the first two so great, yet it expanded nicely upon the detereriorating relationships between the humans.

Speaking of 28 Days Later, I was very impressed by it. I hear a lot of zombie fans have been disappointed with it, b/c it didn't live up to their expectations. But for me, it delivered b/c it followed (if not stole) a lot of the conventions that Romero used so well in his films. I also think it was pretty groundbreaking for 24P cameras and what they did with them.

See, I loved the film because I had no expectations. I'm not a zombie-film fan at all, never seen any of the Romero classics, hated Resident Evil for obvious reasons, but I felt 28 Days Later was an amazing film.

I'll be honest with you. I 'think' I saw Night of the Living Dead once and have had no occasion arise that has warranted purchasing one of the over 12 versions available on DVD to rewatch it. So I'm no expert on it. I've seen dawn of the Dead about 20 times since I first found a copy as a youth and think it is brilliant. Other than that, Dennis mentioned it's consumeristic statement, and yeah... to elaborate... it's a bunch of zombies eating flesh. Great stuff. Day of the dead I saw once and don't remember and can't find a decent copy anywhere to rewatch it, so fuck it... Dawn of the Dead is best...

So I made an aside remark. So fucking what? You somehow neglect to remember this is a discussion board and as it is termed a discussion, I don't know about you, but quite often in discussions I observe and take part in, people say things for no reason that have little to do with anything. I'm no better... and really you tell me to "elaborate" while others tell me to "write less", and I could care less either way... I just type what i feel like at the time...

and fuck it... I like zombie pictures... and really I'm no film geek who subdivides the zombie genre into little fucking monologues about the sexual habits of a zombie or what their bowel movements consist of... it's just a movie. Zombie movies to me are about as intellectual as you can get with a film about mindless, thoughtless monsters that eat people who sometmes have witty dialogue. If I had to use the term "cheap thrill", then that's about as close as it gets... and for my money, it gets no better than spaghetti sauce splattered across the screen while some living dead dude chomps on brains...

As far as tapping on my keys, my remark had nothing to do with that, and in reality, I didn't understand what that remark meant as nothing previously mentioned before said "tapping keys" remark had me tapping much of anything...

Anyhow, my not giving an in-depth breakdown of said zombie film or film trilogy, has little to do with the plucking of fruit, even if it is my own strange fruit. You know this and I know this, so no need to be coy. I like arguing as much as the next guy about useless stuff, but in this case, I can't think of much that would make me any more interested than I already am about zombie films...

Zombie movies good...

Hurrah!!! Now that’s what I’m talking (or is that typing?). You never fail to let me down (for a moment there I thought I was actually going to fall into some pre-pubescent vernacular and say a word like ‘Dude!). When I get a response back like that, I swear my testicles retract slightly. Apologies if I had to provoke you a little, but you’re one of the very few people on this site I actually quite like conversing with (although, we haven’t done that much). It’s all bollocks about the tapping of keys; I myself have no real idea why I mentioned it to begin with. I prescribe to a random thought process of writing, and say pretty much anything that pops into the old noggin. I find it makes for a more interesting read later in the day.
