Your 2004 list, otherwise known as time to bitch or praise the films you've watched
Top 5 Films;
The Corporation - yeah, it played out more like an essay on film, but the thesis was rock solid.
City of God - technically a 2002-2003 movie, but you know how those foreign distribution deals work out.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - those who got it, got it. For everybody else, too bad.
Sideways - Fucking balls out funny.
Oldboy - Finally scored a decent copy. worth the wait.
Honorable mentions;
Badasssss! - docu-drama goodness
Internal Affairs - the US dvd cover was bollocks, but the film was great.
Finding Neverland - breaks your heart
Garden State - it was alright
The Motorcycle Diaries - another docu-drama goodness
Titles I wished would hit my cinema, (wishlist for 2004);
Tarnation
Bad Education
2046
Kinsey
Undertow
DVD releases;
To be honest, I don’t really remember too many dvds that really excited me this year, then again I’m not at home as I write so I can’t stare at the dvd shelf to double check. There is one dvd release that comes to mind though; while everyone was dropping 20 bones for Goodfellas, they should have pitched an extra 30 for the Martin Scorsese collection. Though Marty has sort of lost his touch with his last few films, the collection has some of his greatest films in one package.

These are great. Irreversible was on my list for last year.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
I'd have to go with:
Closer
The Machinist
Sideways
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Garden State
Though the top three are the only ones I would trot out for any accolades most likely.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
One Point O
sub specie aeternitatis
*warning: this product contains sarcasm*
I think I saw Twisted this year on a free movie pass. That was the worst movie of the year. Best movie of the year was Eternal Sunshine. City of God was great, too.

I gather this is supposed to be about 2004, but I nominate anything by Anthony Minghella. He rocks, especially in movies you guys probably think are boring. For worst film of the year I nominate Soderburgh, what a chauncy.

didn't see Rushmore, and it's more homey feeling than dodgeball, a bit less random. I'd say it'll still be funny in ten years where dodgeball may fizzle out because of how specific may of the references and jokes are. Napolean is set a few years back, so it's gonna be a classic I'd say.

I keep hearing it advertised on the radio. As much as I hate radio advertisements for movies because, well, we can't see the damn thing and the suspenseful music doesn't do shit, the ads for Napoleon Dynamite amuse me. It is now on my list of movies to see.

You're an idiot. But then again, you like Napolean Dynamite and Anchorman so it's categorically improbable that you would get what Lost in Translation was working at.
You like Big Gulp movies.
Do you drive a pick'em-up truck?
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
I had never heard of it until today, and it is just turning into a fireworks display for the damn movie - Co-workers, people here. It's outta control. I guess I better go find out what the big deal is. Shit, you even selected your avatar from it did you not?

I'm an idiot. No argument there. I drive a Jeep Wrangler thank you very much.
Now then, C.S.Lewis said that a sign of true wisom and learning is the ability to make even the most difficult concepts understandable to even the simplest people. With that in mind, explain to me what the Hell Lost in Translation was about, because I obviously didn't get it.

wtf is this talk about Lost in Translation? oh wait..some of you waited for the dvd..carry on..
Oh and for the record, while I do like "Big gulp" movies, that doesn't necessarily characterize my taste in movies as a whole. I'm much more eclectic than you're allowing with that statement.

I'm just pandering to Parkaboy's apparent intellectual vanity by insisting he back up his claim to have gotten what "Lost in Translation was working at." He seems tho believe it wasn't total rubbish captured on film and I'd like to know why. If he does so, then i'll give my reason as to why my opinion differs from his. what'd you think of it PCJ?

sticks and stones may break my bones, but not if I break yours first.. now then... do you feel like explaining to us lesser folk what Lost in Translaiton was "wroking at" or not?

Here's what I said back in August when I had to defend it against other Phillistines:
It was a well crafted movie without being "crafted". Two people, having this connection that cannot go anywhere, this longing, that stems from there own lives and carries over into this love fore each other.
But it doesn't ever fall into the Hollywood trap. It doesn't pander to the audience. It doesn't overwrite the characters or their position in the world, or their sense of self. (They're)their lost, or at least adrift as people tend to be.
Too often in film you have to have these dramatic character arcs, these well defined goals. How many people have that in their life? How many people actualy change? Actually know what they want?
This movie depicted the floating aspect that life is more times than not and that two such people adrift can bump into each other on what, for them, is the far side of the world, somewhere away from at least some of thier baggage.
In that way it's hopeful without being saccharine.
It hits the notes evenly but not loudly and that is all too rare in film these days. American or otherwise.
I enjoyed it. At times, it felt a bit slim, but overall it was a good film. I don't think Parkaboy is downplaying your taste. It's just a sign of passion.

NP is pretty dumb, ostensibly. But the characters and situations are things that typify a generation (which probably wasn't quite far enough behind us to be "retro" or whatever). It's kinda like Sixteen Candles or Better Off Dead, but it wasn't made in the eighies. It felt a bit awkward because of that, in the same way that parts of The Wedding Singer felt awkward... most of the jokes were funny because they were making fun of stuff we used to like or do or say, but some people haven't quite let some of that stuff go yet.
Notwithstanding, it's really dry humor at it's best. You almost have to watch it twice to get into it, and there's tons of quotable lines to boot. It's alove story of sorts, and awkward, geeky love story about a kid with a pet llama and moon boots.
In one word: Flippin' sweet.

Michael Bay--esoteric?
He directed Armageddon!! and The Rock!! and let's not forget the Bad Boys movies!!! Weee!!! Those were fun!!! He has cinematic ADD he has to cut every 5 seconds and try and put the audience into a seizure. He's terrible. Shows up at those Adult Video Awards smiling like a coked up monkey. And people keep shelling out money to watch this crap and Hollywood keeps making it.
And I remember when they used to make good action movies. Shit...

oh I try, but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
Now then, Parkaboy... the movie, to me, seemed like the audience wasn't intended to get it. It felt like an andy Kauffman type joke where the actors and produces and everyone involved know that it's a failry well made but altogether boring, uneventful movie, but since the exectution went well maybe no one would notice. and they didn't. Critics loved it ad the average movie goer walked out of the theater scratching his befuddled head thinking, "if someone asks me what it was about... what am I going to say?"
Or here's another take: Maybe the characters were just too real. Just as if I could meet them in real life.... that's not entertaining and that's not why I pay eight and a half bucks to see a movie. I could get that in a coffee shop or a barnes and nobles.

Well, I enjoyed most of those movies. (pearl harbor sucked) judge a movie for what it is. The Rock was cool, Armageddon was a great end of the world movie... (and of course, in this light, Lost in Translation redeems itself because I think the movie turned out exactly how it was intended, Ijust didn't like it.) And Bad Boys, come on... that was funny shit.

Right on, right on.
I just like saying esoteric. I never actually knew who Michael Bay was, but then Armageddon was not a movie that had me thinking, "Wow! Who directed that!?" Who would Bordeau be then anyway? Like, Um ... Truffaut?
