Irreversible: the point of an 8 minute rape sequence is to haunt you, and be disturbing as hell, to make you squirm in your seat.

dont you think that the length of the scene is patronising to the intelligence of the general movie going public?
i truly believe that you could portray the anguish of a rape victim in a more succinct scene that explores the emotional side of the trauma more adeptly and get the audience to appreciate it more than just a great arduous scene of violence.
to you point on being disturbing as hell. why do you feel compelled to be disturbed in this manner? personally i dont feel it is an enjoyable or rewarding experience to be disturbed in this manner it doesnt broaden my understanding of the subject matter and just gives me the impression that the director is hell bend on shocking for shocks sake without being responsible enough toward a pretty sensitive subject.
the movie did indeed make me squirm in my seat all the way out into the foyer. i just cant validate this movie in any way. im quite confortable with graphic violence as long as it doesnt take precedence over the rest of the movie. the actual rape scene is definately not more important that the womans impending psychological traumas in the context of the story. every day violence litters the news, most big budget movie, and in real life. we see it over and over again. why the need for another cycle of it(and a grossly lengthened piece at that). there is no justification in showing this at length.
.
as for haunting you - having viewed this, do you think you appreciate the subject of rape any better and would be able to understand or relate to a rape victim with this scene that has haunted you so. i really do doubt it.
as for "the virgin suicides" my point was that i really enjoyed it. i just cant believe sofia made "lost in translations" it really didnt do much for me opposed to the former.

ok the film wasnt boring or highly offensive, but i really cant enjoy courtney because she has absolutely no range or talent and woody is similarly one dimensional.sometimes for me, certain actors lack of imagination can rail me against a particular film even if it had some redeeming features after all.

I can't stand the movie the Others. It seriously makes me sad how bad that movie was. I wasn't a fan of 21 grams either ( i owned it and gave it away). I walked out of that movie with Will Farrel being on the news as well as the second movie about snakes in the Amazon.
5 - a beautiful mind
4 - the royal tenenbaums
a beautiful mind - ill agree with simply because having been associated with people of various mental dissabilities including bi polar disorder and shizophrenia it was a very simplistic movie. the only aspect it really touched on was the halucinations and even those were tame.
a child and some university chum as the halucination, not the usual combination of visions. try beezelbub and other satanic looking images and you get closer to paydirt. this movie was soft. try getting a hold of a doco on black american musician "wesley willis" who suffered from shizophrenia to understand this disease better. another hollywood strike out.
the royal tenenbaums-
stiller (please retire) wilson and paltrow, is this the most unholy of combinations ever ? its a quirky little film or so they'd have us all believe. the characters are all irritating and stillers kids need a wrap over the head for good measure, flush this dump down the toilet.

it definately attacks the comfort level, if anybody wasnt offended by that then i dont think they have any morality
but are you saying that it simply did it as an effect to shock without reason? or are you saying that you believe it had an underlying motive ?
i believe the lenght of the scene was supposed to go above and beyond the level of comfort, in no way insulting the intellegence of the audience, but attacking your comfort level.
as for insulting the audiences intelligence it certainly does because it insinuates that the movie going public are only able to sympathise with a victim of rape after watching an 8 minute rape scene itself. it implies that people are not able judge the severity of physical and mental trauma of the individual in question immediately after the incident just by talking to them and observing they're body language demeanour etc. its condescending and definately insulting.

was the OTHERS that one with nicole kidman in a sort of period house with a couple of kids and they had to keep the light out of the house ? i remember renting this and thinking damn i could of fed m+m's to the ducks at my local lake for the last hour or so.
21 grams was brilliant. i cant believe people dont like it. naomi watts is generally brilliant and shaun penn is reliable if overrated by certain sections of the media. and benicio did a serviceable job. two thumbs up.

acting ability is paramount. adequate character development also important.
also a well written script that portrays the subject matter in a responsible and inventive way.
breasts and mexican flame throwing midgets are also a prerequisite in my opinion.

I wish my life was a nonstop hollywood movie show
A fantasy world of celluloid villans and heroes
Cause celluloid heroes never feel any pain
And celluloid heroes never really die
~The Kinks - Celluloid Heroes
No order, and I could probably think of more, and these are only movies I've seen. And I'm not including horror movies that fail at what they try to do. Or kid's movies. There are too many:
Pearl Harbor
Batman & Robin
Phantom Menace
The Grudge
Ringu
I just don't watch a movie if I think it will be a waste of my time, so these are the only one's I could think of. Ju-on was cool and so was The Ring... isn't that wierd...
my #1 is:
"last man standing" w/ bruce willis.........a remake of "for a few dollars more" w/ clint eastwood, which was fucking awesome, if you like westerns...or clint eastwood.
EDIT:

good one....i mean bad one...i mean i agree.
I'm new to this forum, and forums in general, so forgive me if my list isn't quite on topic.
Here are some films/movies that I've tried to watch several times because most people rave about 'em, but I just ended up turning them off.
1. Princess Bride
2. Harry Potter 1 ( I never even bothered with the rest )
3. Pitch Black
4. Wedding Crashers
5. Citizen Kane
No one has the right to teach us stuff we don't want to learn. That's what our Bill of Constitution's all about.

i agree that harry potter sucks. last year, my housemate was obsessed with harry potter and so we had a harry potter marathon where we watched all of the movies one after the other. it was SO boring. however, i thought wedding crashers was awesome. it was one of those rare movies where i was actually larughing because it was funny. usually, i laugh because you know that its supposed to be funny, but this movie was actually funny. the ending was a little silly but overall i liked it. i haven't seen any of the other movies on your list.
me an a buddy were just discussing this last night before watching "Waiting" and said how yeah all these teenybopper american pie spinoff movie are without doubt bad movies
however, its is worth watching them once because under the dreck you can find maybe a handful of pretty good gags, jokes, humourous situations
normally, this wouldnt be enough to sift through the rest of the dreck but they also give you some nice booby shots too
wedding crashers is a perfect example of this
Waiting however, had maybe 5 really good jokes and no boobies so it fell short
theyre both still bad movies
Don't get why so many people put "The Royal Tenenbaums" as one of the worst movies ever. Wes Anderson definately has a lot of style, something most hollywood directors lack. Also saw Being John Malkovich on someone's worst movie list. And can't understand that either. Why aren't people putting All Ashton Kutcher Movies, All Chris Rock Movies? Or maybe they are, I haven't looked at each and every post. In no specific order: Head of State, Against the Ropes, Surviving Christmas, Dances with Wolves, and Maid in Manhattan. But the question should really be... what are the good movies that are made? Because there are probably like 3 each year. Haha
yeah, wes anderson is pretty cool.i liked royal tenenbaums too. life aquatic with steve zissou kind of sucked though. i've only seen rushmore like once and i can't remember if i liked it or not. also, why aren't people putting down jennifer lopez movies, mandy moore movies and hilary duff movies?
does anyone else see how almost all movies mentioned are ones made within the last 15 years
maybe because nowadays a lot of movies are geared towards teeny boppers who like to watch movies with really crude humor or stupid romantic comedies. because of this, most of the movies made now are crap.

i don't even know what beach blanket bingo is. also it could be that many cult members are young people who have not seen very many movies that are really old and therefore our idea of what the worst movies include mostly recent movies.
drowning mona
pauly shore is head(even though im a huge shore fan)
the perfect man
anything at all with hilary duff in it
Oh my god this is a tough one to answer, but I feel i must try
1. Double Team (starring Van Dam and DENNIS RODMAN....in fact anything with Jean Claude is the worst movie ever, so lets group them all into one.)
2. Bats. A horror movie about bats where sometimes the bats are shitty cgi, and sometimes they are much bigger, gargoyle looking, rubber bats. It even has a song, "bats gonna getcha! Bats gonna getcha!"
3. Battlefield Earth I love when they teach the cavemen geometry so they can fly fighter jets. Fuck you L Ron Hubberd, and fuck all your clones.
4. Broken Flowers You guys thought Royal Tenenbaums was boring? I liked it, but this. This was excrutiatingly boring. 2 hours of Bill Murray staring blankly at things and driving around.
5. The Patriot Maybe it's because I'm a left wing terrorist in training and the title already had my hackles raised, and maybe it's because i hate how they so cheaply just killed off his family so he would have some excuse to seek brutal revenge over and over throughout the movie. And maybe I just hate everything Mel Gibson does, besides Mad Max. That's not true i liked Payback. That's a decent revenge movie.
sidenote: Everything with Steven Segal, any rapper, any pop singer, directed by Joel Schumaker...damn, i'm sure i could lump some other things into the incineration heap, but i'm blanking.

Oh man, i love all these movies. Except for Pitch Black....which i still thought was entertaining...but I was stoned so that shouldn't count.
I like your list though because I think we call all agree that dumb horror movies are bad, Hilary Duff movies are bad etc. Yours is more controversial.
In that vane, my new list is this:
1. Hostel
2. The Village (Goddamit M. Night! You'd be a great director if you would drop your stupid twist endings! Your new movie better kickass or i'm giving up on you.)
3. About Schmidt Schmit? Whatever. Fucking stale, but everyone loved it.
4. The chronicles of Narnia. Christianized Lord of the Rings, even though i liked the books when i was little. Those kids are fucking annoying. Harry Potter owns you.
5. Sticking with the Patriot.

HOORAH
how could i forget this. jack nicholson knocking about in the persona of an old person. what a concept. all that was missing was the colostomy bag, bingo and a half hour shot of him drinking down diuretics whilst watching "wheel of fortune".
were there any highlights besides resting my eyelids ?
1 that bates woman got her kit off (not a highlight)
2 jack tried to get with some guys wife
3 jack generally feeling sorry for himself acting like a lamentable git and boring me shitless.
a whole movie revolving around a depressed pensioner - boring boring boring.

1.Crash: Any way I look at it, it sucks.
2.White Chicks: Wow...just....wow.
3.In The Time Of The Butterflies: Strong candidate for first, but I was forced to watch it for school so it didn't truamatize me quite as much.
4.Charlie And The Chocalate Factory: Why would you remake this?
5.Anything made by Uwe Boll: He lacks what he flaunts and flaunts what he lacks, metaphorically and literally.
i liked charlie and the chocolate factory. hello?! it has johnny depp in it! and the oompa loompa was awesome!
i also liked crash. i liked how it talked about all the prejudices people have about each other and how it is bad to characterize people in terms of just black and white.it was interesting how characters you thought were disgusting people actually had a caring side to them while other characters who seemed good had flaws. :drive:

Well, I already started a thread saying why I hated Crash is because I felt it was manipulative. As for Charlie and the Chocalate factory, I like Johnny Depp too but I was running out of movies to say and so I asked the guy next to me in the library, he said that the movie was kind of boring so I just put that up there.

yeah, parent trap sucked.
i think my bad movies list is probably askew
because if theres even a hint that i wont like a movie i wont bother watching it in the first place
"Jack" with Robin Williams.
I absolutely HATED that flick.
I just saw Kalifornia, by the way. It was alright.
i think my bad movies list is probably askew

Yeah, same thing for me. Except for when I watched Crash, it wasn't until a few months afterwards that I figured out how much it sucked.:stups:
I can't stand you Jurassic Park haters. Stop thinking 'film' for a second, JP was a movie, and its sole intention was to have Dinosaurs running around, looking realistic, eating people. It accomplished that, if you rented or bought it expecting more, than you just have bad taste, or you're a complete idiot. Like those people that expected more from Alien vs Predator than to see an Alien fight a Predator. Its like buying a meat-eaters pizza and complaining that its too greasy. Learn how to rent movies.
i LOVE jurassic park, it's one of my alltime favorites. maybe because of that i also hated JP2... another reason for me to hate jp2 is that i really enjoyed the book and we all know what happens when somebody adapts a book that yu really like... it comes out shit! (there are some major exceptions to this rule)

i got it... i just found the idea plain stupid... it was the first and only time i got a real urge to leave the cinema
by the way... "Unhygenix" is a great choice
antes ser rico e saudavel do que pobre e doente
1. "Jack" with Robin Williams
2. "Jack" with Robin Williams
3. "Jack" with Robin Williams
4. Collateral/King Kong (tie)
5. Jack with Robin Williams
you're off to a good start.
his list stinks of mild and failure.
I didn't see Stallone or Seagal like feature length films in any of those.
I saw this one movie with Ice Cube where he was the head of the Secret Service (who never left his office during the movie) and the Secret Service was running a training exercise where terrorists try to kidnap the President, except the training exercise turns out not to be a training exercise and terrorists actually kidnap the President, but never leave the building they kidnap the President from, probably due to the film's limited budget. I think the fact they rented a helicopter and one character breaks his cell phone in anger took up all of their budget, as well as paying Ice Cube, whose involvment in the movie was picking up a telephone and expressing mild alarm over the fact that the President has been kidnapped.
1.Gigli
2.From Justin to Kelly
3.SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2
4.Glitter
5.Mannequin: On the Move
I just saw Elephant for some reason and now it's going somewhere at the top of my list. I think someone else might've already ranted about this so I'll keep it short.
When it started for about 10 minutes i thought they did a good job illustrating what highschool was like, and I felt quesy waiting for the poor kiddies to get gunned down. Then at about minute 11 I was bored and annoyed out of my mind and just wanted them to shoot the fuckers so fucking movie would just end already. Jesus. I shouldn't feel relieved when a school full of kids get massacred. But I did. I did.
Fuck not with Rocketman
But it was so pretty!
I saw a film a few months back that was probably one of the worst I've ever seen. It was called 'Bats' and it was about a mutant strain of bats that start to attack people, my favourite was the stereotypical black comedy relief, it was exactly the kind of thing that the black people in Scream joke about.

2) IRREVERSIBLE - 8 minute rape scenes are unjustifiable (i would write more but ive written plenty about this movie before and im feeling rested and well balance to avoid a full page rant)
3) LOST IN TRANSLATIONS - "your new passport to a cut price coma". prince sang about 23 positions in a one night stand, well ....... this movie had 23 varieties of boring. bill murray is continuously talentless as well.scarlett johansson is about as captivating as listening to a demented drunk on the city rail link attempting racially inclined prejudices. a new rival for full strength sedatives. watch out pfizer there goes your market share.
how could sofia coppola make "the virgin suicides" and then this sleepathon ?
