The Mars Volta
I'm a big fan of At the Drive In, and then Sparta but I just got Cedric's new project "Deloused In the Comatorium" and I have shat myself.
Whoa.
Anyone else out there as blown back by this as me?
Never get so attached to a poem you forget truth that lacks lyricism.
After hearing TMV I went back and checked out ATDI's Relationship of Command and that changed my opinion of the band a lot. They're different, no doubt, but Mars Volta is far more ambitious and I don't think "album of the year" is an exaggeration. I seriously didn't think any album this year would outshine Hail to the Thief, but De-Loused may have done it.
Then again, I might be wrong.
Yeah, The Mars Volta is an artistic acheivment.
I loved Relationship of Command but all it seemed to me, excepting the first and eighth tracks, was raw and untapped potential.
Then came Sparta which is great and fun and alive but again, with the exception of a few tracks, nothing but untapped potential.
The Mars Volta is an impressive acheivement that gives me hope for other "supergroup" projects. Being a huge Nine Inch Nails and Tool fan, I worry about the evntual release of Tapeworm being an overproduced and incredibly pretentious disaster. But if Deloused is any example of what can be done with great artists working together, then I'm hopeful.

It's really hard for me to decide, just because I love ATDI so god damn much. TMV is definitely the most brilliant thing I've heard since Cephalic Carnage's "Lucid Interval" and will be an album I cherish for the rest of my life. Nothing even comes close. BTW, it's Cedric and Omar on this, not Jim. Jim is in Sparta, whom I also love.

No, I know it's not the same people in Mars and Sparta, but they're both derivatives of ATDI.
I haven't heard this Cepahlic Carnage, though.

I know that, but you said something about how Cedric plays off of Jim. Cedric sings. Jim sing and plays guitar in Sparta. Omar is the other guitarist.
Most people haven't heard CephCarn. Most people wouldn't like it if they did.

I did say that, and I was referring to how in ATDI they played well off of each other...
I think Proto hit in head on with the untapped potential in regards to ATDI, and even Sparta to a degree, though I did think a lot of Wiretap Scars was phenom. However, seeing TMV or Sparta live, I think some of that untapped potential seems to come into fruition a little more evident as they are both stellar live.

So the vocalist played well off the guitar? Your statement confuses.

Both were vocalists, and their sound(s) played well off of each other...IMO
And the guitarist, Omar, sings a great harmony with Cedric in TMV. Track five especially.

I've never heard them. Anywhere I can hear their stuff (other than Kazaa)?

This I know. I guess it was your wording. "Played so well....." I'm just taking it too literally is all.
????????? Now this.....this I doubt. Does it say this in the liner notes???? I found no mention of it....and I'm relatively sure everything is Cedric...............

No, there's a harmony between him and Omar. They do this live as well. I'm pretty sure it is not all Cedric.

on this CD, it's called "De Loused in the Comatorium" and its by the Mars Volta
Then again, I might be wrong.
If you could maybe...compare the Mars Volta to another band, please?
The singer from At the Drive In mind melds with the singer of Coheed and Cambria and the rest of both bands join up with Santana and they put out a crazy harcore, guitar driven, melodic and complexy quasi-jazz album.

Good description...
The Santana analogy was right on. Parts even semi-reminded me of Dream Theater/Liquid Tension.
And it seems as if they've fused a bit of the RHCP energy and and their funk in with an more mature child of ATDI.

we've been discussing mars volta in different forums, and i believe it's popped up on a lot of "best album of the last year" responses.
it is without a doubt great. it captures a lot of the fire that ATDI had, without i think the intensity of certain aspects lyrically or otherwise as i think cedric and jim played off each other well, but the sound and how they play with it, it's genious.
and flea's bass kicks serious arse!
