The Live Music Thread
I really, really, really love live music. I try to hit a concert about twice a month, usually local or regional acts. Conventional wisdom says that most any mid-level act stops in Omaha essentially to earn the gas money it takes to drive through the Midwest. In the last year, I've seen:
Bright Eyes
Noah's Ark Was a Spaceship
Jake Bellows (2x)
Tilly and the Wall
The Conduits
It's True (RIP)
Deseparacidos (which was super-amazing, as they broke up in like '04 or something)
Josh Ritter
The Mountain Goats
Old Canes (2x)
So-So Sailors (3x?)
The Mynabirds (4x)
Theodore (2x)
The Good Life
Built to Spill
Matt Cox
Brad Hoshaw
Cursive (2x)
There are more, I'm sure. This doesn't count opening acts or random friend's bands, just headliners.
The two concerts this last year I regret not hitting are The Black Keys (couldn't find anyone to go with me because my friends sux) and Band of Horses (they were playing 3 hours away, on like a Thursday night or something).
I want to know: Who have you seen recently? Who puts on a live show? Who's not worth seeing live? Etc. etc.
There is hope, but not for us.
aw Jane, you really missed out not seeing Band of Horses.
Suddenly I has old.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I know! I was pretty sad about it when you spoke so highly of it. One of my friend's little brothers went, and all I could do was shake my fist at his facebook photos.

I really wish I could see them again, I missed them when they came to New York this year.
I haven't really seen a lot of bands this year at all.. off the top of my head I've seen:
Them Crooked Vultures
The Magnetic Fields
Immolation/Disma
Michael Shencker Group/Lynch Mob
The Australian Chamber Orchestra
Fleshgod Apocalypse/Decrepit Birth/Suffocation
Paul Motian/Joe Lovano/Bill Frisell
Gary Numan
a few other random jazz trios at the Village Vanguard, I'm not sure of the names.. no one really significant.
Kind of a weird mix. Metal shows are a new thing for me, I'd listened to metal for a few years but I'd never really been to a metal show, because I didn't want to go by myself. But now I get to go with my husband, which is awesome. I always take earplugs though. That shit is loud.
Magnetic Fields were a bit disappointing, but I suppose when you go to see a band with that much material, you can't expect to hear all your favourites... but I don't think I heard any of mine. They hardly played anything off 69 Love Songs.
I've gone to two events this semester. ACL 2010 and Circa Survive playing at the White Rabbit with Dredg and some other band.
At ACL, I saw a whole bunch of bands, including Band of Horses, which were pretty great. But here were my two favorite shows (crappy sound quality, and I didn't actually make these videos. I was too busy rockin' out):
Gotta love Chris's energy here
I've got a thing for finales
As for Circa Survive, they put on a fucking amazing show for such a small venue (also crappy sound quality):
Si vis pacem, para bellum
I've seen Pendulum, Massive Attack, Placebo, Tricky, The Prodigy, Parov Stelar, Nine Inch Nails, Freestylers, Richard Dorfmeister, and a lot of other major dubstep and drum and bass acts. Also, can't wait to see Nouvelle Vague next week.
I really miss going out to see bands play live. between the Southgate House, 20th Century theater and Bogart's there's a ton of really great acts that come through here too. Then they started up this Midpoint Music Festival a few years ago that brings in a ton of acts. I just ain't got the dough to go out to them like I used too.
Still the best time I had at a live band was probably that H-Bomb Ferguson. One of the guys with us got up and played harmonica with his band!
although, that's about all i remember from that night.
Janers, if they ever play live anywhere within 200 miles of where you are, you absolutely must experience Sunn O))).
I've seen them twice and, both times, it was the closest I have ever come to having a true religious experience.
Bring ear plugs.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'm not really into loud music. I'm more into the troubadour looking-real-sad-check-me-out-I-have-a-beard type of music.
Case in point: Going to see Tim Kasher on Friday.

CHECK OUT MY BEARD.
There is hope, but not for us.
Jane, what did you think of Built to Spill? I saw them open for Kings of Leon and I thought they were actually pretty good live.

Sunn O))) is not "loud", nor is it music. The earplugs are so your head doesn't bleed. The subsonic vibrations will cause all the liquid in your body to ripple. This, in turn, causes ecstasy and fervor.

go see Todd Snider.
Nick, they were okay. I wasn't there to see them, but I remember not hating it.
Actually I was distracted the whole time because during their set, I was introduced to someone I'd been looking forward to meeting for like a year, and it was literally the rudest another human being has ever been to me upon introduction. He didn't make eye contact when we shook hands and then walked away when I was in the middle of a sentence. Also my boss had this conversation with him:
E: I don't know if we're even allowed to stand back here. Is this okay?
N: I can stand anywhere I want. My band built this club.
Live musical outdoor events: They be a cruel mistress.
Tuffy, that's... um. Is it a wizard band?
There is hope, but not for us.

lol, wizard band
Yes. They are a wizard band.

I don't know man, going to see a wizard band would really hurt my street cred.
There is hope, but not for us.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

HOW DO YOU THINK HE DOOOES IT
idontknow.

I don't go to see bands play live a whole lot, because they don't come around here often + the costs.
ANYWAY.
Antimatter - Depressing music, but absolutely beautiful. Mick Moss (the singer) is amazing. Definitely not a show to party at, but instead to just stand there and enjoy the pretty music. I would definitely go see them again. From the show I went to:
Kaizers Orchestra - Huge party live. The music is weird, fun, gypsy. I had such a great time at both shows I've been to.
Anathema - Also quite depressing music, but the first band I saw live, which is why they're so special to me. I've seen them 2 more times since then.
EDIT_
I've also seen Clutch live, which was fun. I've seen Ulver, ehmm.. Hm.

I recently saw The Avett Brothers. You know how people will say some bands are better live? They were so much better live, and I listen to their records nonstop. They involve the crowd, jump and dance around onstage, and generally blast the crap outta the venue.
