i received my CD from maestro. he put a cute pic of ppl dancing on the front and wrote out an astounding amount of info on the little booklet inside...it's all very obscure stuff, as i expected. i was terrified when he called duran duran a guilty pleasure, b/c i had put stuff like mary j. blige on mine. he told me to surprise him, and i think i will at least do that...i just hope he doesn't hate it.

i hadn't mailed mine out before i got his, though, so i included a long letter with mine attempting to justify my musical taste...

Hey, no need to justify what you like. I try not to judge people by what they listen to, because there is nothing worse than a musical ellitist (sp?)

Sweet crap, I'm just now finding out about this. A friend throws a "NEW MUSIC NIGHT" once a month. Let's say 30 people are invited, they each create a CD compilation of X number of tracks that they think people won't know about but will dig. They create some cheap album art as best they can, maybe a little booklet and replicate 30 copies. At the party they just spin them as background, and when you leave you take a copy of everyone's offering with you. You're in your car with 30 CDs. Good day at work the next day.

Why can't something along those lines work here? Anyone up for some mail tag? Say, organize a theme (slow dance jams that remind me of Chuck) or whatever and run with it - everyone who wants, signs up provided they're willing to split with the blank discs + postage across the continent.

Any takers?

I'm up for theme CD's. I really like those threads "music to die to", "sexiest song" etc. I'm in. Does this need a new thread perchance?

I'm thinking maybe post a theme maybe each month. Then everyone that is inspired by that theme makes a CD and posts. People can PM for the CD's they want.

I think its a great idea.

Okay, I just got my mixtape from Will, and I wanted to tell you all about it because it is just so freaking cool and I want you all to be jealous of me.

First off, here's the playlist:
Side 1
1. Pete Townsend--Baba O'Reiley (orchestral version)
2. Pearl Jam--Alive
3. Fugazi--Merchandise
4. Stevie Wonder--Superstition
5. Jim Boyd--Father and Farther
6. Woody Guthrie--Jesus Christ
7. White Collar Crime--God is Kick-Ass
8. Ani Difranco--32 Flavors
9. Sleater-Kinney--Swimmer

Side 2
1. The Clash--Know Your Rights
2. Mia Zapata--Social Love
3. The Gits--Social Love
4. Chris Cornell--Sunshower
5. Soul Coughing--Idiot Kings
6. Patti Smith--People Have the Power
7. Otis Redding--Tramp
8. White Stripes--Little Room
9. Jane's Addiction--Jane Says [this one really cracked me up]
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers--Can't Stop
11. Joey Ramone--What a Wonderful World

The cover of this, in case you are wondering, says I LOVE YOU TO DEATH and has flowers and a "Get Your War On" comic on it, and I laughed my ass off. Again.

Also in the box were a short letter and a set of liner notes, 2 beanie babies, 3 books ('Big Trouble' by Dave Barry, 'A People's History of the United States' by Howard Zinn, and 'Reservation Blues' by Sherman Alexie), some yellow post-it notes Smile, what looks like a Goombah toy, and a letter, fake tattoo, and ribbon from Chuck.

I'm smiling so hard right now it hurts. So yeah. That's my mixtape.

Okay, here goes:

Farenheit Fair Enough - Telefon Tel Aviv
In My Place - Coldplay
Drive By Kiss - The Dambuilders
Wednesday - Tori Amos
Anesthesia - Bad Religion
Moment of Weakness - Bif Naked
Life's Gonna Suck - Denis Leary
Religion - Front 242
Kid Fears - Indigo Girls w/ Michael Stipe
Mona Lisa - Guster
Water Night - Eric Whitacre
Are You Lonesome Tonight - Elvis
Celebrity Skin - Hole
3 AM Etrenal - KLF
Brackish - Kittie
In the Meantime - Mary J. Blige
Tribute to the Greatest Song in the World - Tenacious D
Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash
I Whupped Batman's Ass - Welsey Willis
Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk - Rufus Wainwright
Ziggy Stardust (Acoustic) - David Bowie

Kitty was a little worried about me liking her selections, but overall I think it was a successful exchange. I like Coldplay, I like Tori Amos. Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands. I was a PA on Denis Leary's TV show, "The Job," so I gotta give props to the boss. Everyone loves Tenacious D. Everyone should love Johnny Cash. Wesley Willis is awesome. Plus, I was exposed to a handfull of new music.

Has anyone else received their mixes, or are you all just lazy about posting, like me? (Mine came over a week ago already.)

KLF is gonna rock ya!

Well, it wasn't like I was his personal assistant, but like I said, I did work on his show. I think the most he ever said to me was, "You got orange juice in that cooler?" Oh yeah, and he's really tall in person.

Comedy Central taped a roast for him this past weekend and a bunch of us who worked on the show got to go. It was pretty cool. I don't know when it will air. I saw Big Pussy from the Sopranos and some of the Strokes. I don't know which one. They are all dirty.

Insomno, PM me your address and I'll get to work on one

And also, you might want to name like one band that I can work off of, otherwise I'll just be putting songs that I like on there. Unless you have faith in my taste in music.

Knox, buddy, I'm hoping you were drunk when you asked that. But even if you were sober, I will tell you now. Because I love you.

The previous posts (i.e. all the posts before this post) were posts about something called, "the great MIXTAPE exchange!!!" where people sent each other mixtapes (or CDs, depending on their available technologies) to one another. It was an awesome idea, and most executed awesomely. Although XChuck never wrote me back, so he's not getting his mix tape because I want to send it to Zoe Trope, because Harper Collins just sent me an ARC of her book and I'm in it so she deserves teh love more than XChuck. Although if the little spaz ever emails me back, I will make him one, too. Wink

That's what the thread WAS about. From now on, though, it is only dedicated towards singing the praises of what AN ABSOLUTE GODDESS (ironic, I know, as she is a devout Christian. But you know what I mean) JANE S. IS!!!! Smile Big Yeay!

Here is the tracklistings of the - not one! But two CDs that she made me. They are perfect in everyway and she has better music taste than anyone I know. And sent me M+M's and a cool good luck in grad school bear and sweet Japanese stuff and a pic of herself (she is teh gorgeous, no joke), and all sorts of stuff:

Will's CD #1
1.Blackbird - The Beatles
2. Breakfast After 10 - Blue October
3. One Foot in Front of the Other - Bright Eyes (I <3 them now!)
4. Shine All the Time - Blue Moon Ghetto
5. I Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees
6. Vincent (Starry Starry Night) - Dan McClean
7. Three Libras - A Perfect Circle
8. The Brilliant Dance - Dashboard Confessional (Sad story, good music!)
9. Harder to Breathe - Move On 5 (I <3 this song, too)
10. Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven(!!!)
11. One For My Baby (And One More For the Road) - Frank Sinatra and Count Basie
12. Sister - The Nixons
13. Love In Vain Blues - Robert Johnson (Perfect Synergy between Jane and I: I sent her a copy of Sherman Alexie's book "Reservation Blues," in which Johnson is a main character!)
14. Leader of Men - Nickelback
15. Mother Nature's Son - Beatles
16. Star-Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix

Will's CD #2
1. Give Me My Money Back - Ben Folds
2. The Crossroads - James Cotton and David "Honeyboy: Edwards
3. I Saw Her Again Last Night - Mamas and the Papas
4. Given to Fly - Pearl Jam
5. What's Left of the Flag - Flogging Molly
6. My October - Collapsis
7. Come Down (Acoustic) - Bush
8. The Times They Are A-Changing - Bob Dylan
9. Hi-de-ho - Blood, Sweat, and Tears
10. Alive - Pearl Jam (I put this on hers, too!)
11. Don't Know When But the Day's Gonna Come - Bright Eyes (!!!)
12. Dear Prudence - The Beatles
13. At Last - Etta James
14. Beautiful Things Can Come From the Dark (it's a great song, but I can't look at the title without laughing) - Azure Ray
15. Revolution - Oar
16. Fell In Love With the Girl - White Stripes (who were also placed on the tape I made Jane).

UTTER PERFECTION NOT JUST ONCE, BUT TWICE!
SHE BLOWS MY MIND, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN (AND DENNIS)!
I AM AMAZED! FLOORED! AMAZED AND FLOORED!

And grateful. For one of the most awesomeness friends I've managed to make this year.

With love, forever.

Knox, that's what this thread's about.
