The Brilliance of Nicolas Cage
I had a brief encounter with that man.
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
I only liked him in The Weather Man. Other than that he annoys me, a lot.
Why do people seem to hate him so much? Some of his work is really good. Leaving Las Vegas and Matchstick Men are the ones that first come to mind.
"The rat inside your brain rules the world."
Citizen Kane SUCKED!!!!!!! True fact.
Alcoholism is the cure not the disease.
His acting is pretty damn monotone. I do like Matchstick Men but i mean overall he's not the best actor. Plus he takes on some shitty ass roles these days.
YES.
Ghost Rider, facepalm.
Bangkok Dangerous, facepalm.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice, ugh.
I also don't give a shit about the National Treasure movies.
And now he's working on another Ghost Rider movie!
Get it together, Nicolas Cage!

I really hated him in Captain Corelli's Mandolin and yeah Bangkok Dangerous was just awful.
I'll admit I'll watch National Treasure movies if nothing is on but to say he's a great actor in that, gimme a break.
I didn't even attempt to watch Ghost Rider.
Come on ! Raising Arizona, Face/Off, Windtalkers ! Those were cool !

Face/Off was cool.
Two words: Nicolas Coppola.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I like him in Kick Ass.

Thinking about renaming this thread "The PASSION of Nicolas Cage."

I'll watch The Rock if it's on--but Sean Connery is awesome (even though he took many questionable roles)
I really do not like Nicholas cage, he seems to play the same character in every movie he is in; you don't see the character as a person of their own, you see Mr. Cage pretending to be some character.
Think Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, you don't see Tom Hanks, you see Forrest Gump. Or Brad Pitt as Jeffrey Goines in 12 Monkeys, you see the character, not the actor.
All I ever see with Nicholas Cage, is Niucholas Cage. He annoys me.
I don't even care if I spell his name correctly, not worth the edit he is so irritating.
I dunno, I think Tom Hanks plays pretty much the same character in every movie he's ever been in, too. He's so bland.
As for Nicholas Cage, early career = moments of good, later career = all dreadful.
His Elvis and Superman obsessions are pretty amusing though.
I do think Cage has had some awesome roles and I'm not denying he's been in great movies but in the past ten years he hasn't acted in anything extraordinary. Kick Ass was probably one of his last better roles but he wasn't even really the main character in that movie.
I thought it was pretty awesome when John Travolta played Nicholas Cage in Face off. Now that was good Acting!

"Awwww, he's alright. Tha's all I'm sayin'."
No one has mentioned Lord of War, which he was brilliant in. Though, he was only brilliant in it because the role required a lack of feelings and facial expressions.
Lord of War was pretty good actually.
I agree, but I also think that the role may have been shaped around his inability to express emotion. Or, the role required it so he was chosen. That makes more sense.
His Elvis and Superman obsessions are pretty amusing though.
They ever do that Superelvis movie, you know we all gotta line up for that one!
This is why we can't have nice things.
I enjoyed him in Valley Girl.
Joy: "Julie!"
Sorrow: "Julie!"
Anger: "Julie!"
Humor: "Is this movie in 3-D?"
"No, but your face is!"
Also... "Julie!"
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'm not the biggest fan of his.
However in the film "Adaptation" he was fucking brilliant.
Charlie Kaufman wrote and directed that...
You know Mr. Kaufman from Being John Malkovich
and Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.
Kaufman knew that Cage could act, he just needs a proper script and direction.
>>>That can be said for most of us in our professional lives.
Kaufman didn't direct Adaptation.

Yeah, but name someone who did direct one of his films?

spike jonze?
There's something about him...the way he looks...not like he's always bored, but like he always wants to be bored.
that samberg kid does a great impression of him on SNL.
I like him alright. Not a fan of all his movies or even most of his movies but sometimes he works.
I don't know if it says something about nic cage or about all of us, that no one's said anything about the Wicker Man remake yet.

Leaving Las Vegas was real good.
the wickerman remake is really one of those 'now let us never speak of it again' movies
the wickerman remake is really one of those 'now let us never speak of it again' movies
I do like the part near the end when he's beating the shit out of EVERYONE. Men, women, kids, ridiculous. That's the only part I can remember or care about lol
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
I stand corrected. Kaufman wrote it, Spike Jonze directed it.
Did you like the movie Subby Socks? What about about Cage's acting?
Cage doesn't act. They wheel him out on set like Hannibal Lector and unleash him.

Serious answer:
Cage's range is rather limited. He can do good work, and has. He needs to make better decisions about the roles he takes. A good* director benefits him greatly as well.
He has been very very good in a few of his films and I've found a number of his others enjoyable on a "I'm just looking for some entertainment" level.
Face/Off was a good effort on his part. The premise could have been very interesting had the writing, acting, and directing all been stellar. As it was, none of those hit the heights that were needed for the film to be completely successful.
*"Good" in this case refers more to a director who can draw a quality performance out of Cage rather than one necessarily known for great films in general. Directorial vision and interpersonal chemistry are key here.
This is why we can't have nice things.
oh man, I watched that Knowing the other night. Jesus! That was terrible.
What's worse is, nicolas cage may have been the best thing about it.
I consider Knowing more humiliating for Alex Proyas. He peeked with Dark City and hasn't made a good movie since.

I hadn't even heard of this movie, but I just read the synopsis on wiki, and oh boy does that ever sound like a load of post 9-11 claptrap!
You do a Dark City, your only proper next move is to retire.

Garage Days was such a piece of shit

That movie was a little interesting--until the end happened and pissed me right off.
Also the plane crash was pretty intense until you see survivors running around on fire.
[sarcasm font]I have to say Nic Cage's best role was in this classic[/sarcasm font]

I really hate that man.
