For those who are interested in the creation of memorable characters, here is a link to the transcript of the original 1978 story conference between George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Lawrence Kasdan in preparation of Raiders of the Lost Ark :

It is a long PdF document (125 pages) and adresses all the ideas that they (especially Lucas) threw in to get the story going, starting with the characteristics of Indiana Jones himself.
