I have always loved a good bass groove. This thread is to celebrate and recognize the best bass players of all time and to hopefully introduce us to some new riffs, grooves and players to add to the list.

Les Claypool

Flea

Dan Schmid

Justin Chancellor

Victor Wooton

Jaco Pastorius

There are others, but I figure I will let you guys (hopefully) introduce me to your favorites.

All very good. I can't think of any other atm. I didn't know half of those. Why did you pick By the way by RHCP and Flea? Of course it's some great bassing in it, but Johnny, Kick a hole in the sky is far more bad ass. Something from that era at least. Surprise

John Entwistle (long silent intro but definitely worth it !)

James Jamerson, the house bassist of Motown :

Paul McCartney :

Willie Dixon, master of the blues bass :

The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.

Because I haven't explored the RHCP Discography yet. I have a musical gap between 1993 and 2008 that I am slowly filling in and exploring. That's part of why I made this thread. I'm hoping you can help me and I can help you and we can all be freelovin' down in the bass clef.

Hot Damn! The only problem with loving true jazz bass is that the rest of the musicians they play with are just as freaking incredible, it's hard just to mack on the bass man.

Best bass riff ever then "Another One Bites The Dust" or "For Whom the Bell Tolls". But you've all heard those.

TV used to be full of great bass riffs:

(arguably, this is one of the greatest theme songs ever written. So damn happy!)

(I know, it's only one note, but what a note!)

I agree with most of the above selections, however, one overlooked amazing groove bass player is Rex Brown from Pantera. Check out the video for 5 Minutes Alone during the guitar solo, the tone and the aggressive playing are like heaven to my bass ears.

Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine also does some amazing work.

Charles Levi, the bassist for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult has always laid down some of my favorite bass grooves. Just stuff that is totally danceable and great. His riffs are not technical, like Les Clayppol or anything, but they really get you moving.
