Okay, enough of these favorite/worst movies threads. There is a filmmaker working today that all of you need to seriously check out. I've tried repeatedly on this site to get people to realize him, but I'm not doing so well. So far I've only ever received one email regarding Miike in my Recommendations section.

Well, now's your chance to see the trailers for his two newest films in 2003. Yes, two films. You see, Takashi Miike could be the most prolific filmmaker working today. He makes around 4 films a year. And if you think foreign Japanese cinema can't get any weirder, you're sadly mistaken.

Miike's films are riddled with images you have never before seen. Girls who can shoot darts out of their vaginas... Prostitutes drowing in their own shit... a fight scene between two Chicken Cocks directed like a Matrix scene... the opening title card of "Ichi The Killer" being written in a recently expelled cum puddle.

Heard enough?

No you haven't.

Check out this link:

Then check out my Takashi Miike page on this very site!

Miike is as the kids say "Da Sheeznit" I've seen like a dozen of his movies and that is still only half a handful of them. I like how he can go from Sadomasochism, Necrophillia, and Incest to making a claymation musical. I heard rumors of this guy was actually going to work on an American movie soon with "name" actors under Francis Ford Coppola's production company but that rumor is not a fact as of yet.

I enjoyed "Audition" a lot...very unsettling and nerve-racking. Miike's "Visitor Q," however, is Japan's answer to "Gummo."

And "Gummo," FYI, is the worst film ever made. I once saw a performance artist urinate into the mouth of a giant porcelain fish. I'd rather be that giant porcelain fish than watch "Gummo" again.

I would rather have my mouth staplegunned around the tailpipe of a schoolbus and be dragged naked aross a freeway covered in broken glass than watch "Gummo" again. Such is my dislike for this putrid "film."

I agree, Gummo was shit. Visitor Q was so much better than gummo though. Where gummo was there to shock and well in my opinion bore you to death, Visitor Q is more funny while keeping with the shocks.

Gummo was suppose to be shocking? I thought it was one of the funniest things ever. But I find half-naked hillbillies wrestling chairs to be hilarious.

and taylor is that Miike as your avatar?

When I saw Ichi in a theater, I heard a woman screaming behind me: "This is horrible! I can't get out!"

Dennis didn't mention Agitator, which is a cool yakuza movie, but a bit too long.
Dead Or Alive was ok. It gets a bit boring in the middle, but maybe that's because the opening and ending scenes are fucking brilliant.

Yeah, I really wanna see Agitator but I haven't gotten around to getting that copy which floats around ebay every week.

Speaking of long Yakuza Miike films.. "New Graveyard of Death and Honor" is definitely worth checking out. The protoganist is deplorable... but there are scenes in this film you won't be able to shake off too easily.

Avoid "Rainy Dog," "Andromedia," and "Blues Harp."

And I think "Dead Or Alive" rocks, as does "City of Lost Souls" and "Visitor Q."

I liked "Rainy Dog" though it took me like 3 seperate sittings to watch it all, it was so damn slow. I didn't like City of Lost Souls that much but I might need to see it again. And that ending in DOA was just fucking nuts.

Man I wish I saw Ichi in a theatre... Just to see the looks on other people's faces. I laughed so much during that movie, not because i thought it was funny but because it was soo disturbing that I couldnt Help myself.

You know, the whole thing about Gummo... I think the movie should get some recognition, for one reason: It was called Gummo. Hehe. I like the word Gummo. It's my word of the day! YAA! GUMMO IS A COOL WORD AND A HORRIBLE MOVIE!

i own audition (unrated) and city of lost souls. both are crazy as hell and i would recommend having them both in your collection.

i saw visitor q available for 30 bucks somewhere, but i couldn't afford it. by the time i came back, it was gone.

i can't wait until dead or alive comes out next month. i want more yakuza violence.

Kitano's films are okay. But he's way too self-indulgent in his visions and he likes to spiral into meandering nothingness too much of the time. He seems to me to be like a man whose been given too much directorial power and abuses it, at the risk of story telling, way too much.

Still, he has a knack for poetic violence that I can't ignore.

But if I had to choose my Yakuza violence, it's Dead or Alive all the way. It simply creams anything Beat Takashi has ever done in a movie.

I dont think he abuses his power at all, there are faults in his movies, but i wouldnt call that one of them.

He does have a way with his violence though, that we can agree.

Miikes is not so great at the violence part, at times its good. Others its like watching a B horror film.

What I meant by "abusing his power" is taking the storyline wherever he sees fit, strictly because he's Beat Takashi and he can. I'm sure you know this but, even before Beat was a director in Japan, he was a reknown comic. Now, he's one of the biggest filmmakers in the country. Perhaps the biggest. And I see this tendency in most of his films to take about a 30-45 break halfway through the picture, simply so the director can jerk off for a while at the audience's expense.

Whether it's a 45 sequence in "Sonatine" where the villain/heroes meander about on a beach, while digging holes and throwing a ball around, or a 25 min seq. in "Boiling Point" where Beat smacks people around while feeling up guys and girls at a club... it all feels very self indulgent to me.

Doesn't he even have a film (maybe Hanna-Bi) where he showcases all his artwork throughout a montage?

What does any of this have to do with the story? I mean, I'm fine with a director chilling out with his characters a little bit. Many great directors know how to achieve this (P.T. Anderson) and it gives the movie more flavor. But Beat Takashi just throws in these long pointless sequences that end up making the movie feel disjointed, uneven, and badly paced.

He then picks up the story out of nowhere in the third act and blows his head off in the final scene.

I'm getting a little sick of the pattern. At least Takashi Miike knows how to keep you on your toes.

That is one of his faults, i do have a problem with his going off into lala land. But i wouldnt say its because he thinks hes god or anything. If anything i think its because of his comedic background, if you remember one of his first films ( i think it was getting any? or something by that name) it was a comedy and the whole movie seemed to have that feel.

And as far as for the uneven pace it makes it feel more like real life to me. But i could see how some people wouldnt care for it.

Hey i like miike, i was just saying im not a big fan of his violence at times.

There is one scene in Andromedia that makes an otherwise boring experience worthwhile. It is so zany you recognize it instantly as pure Miike. Plus it leads into a boy band song and dance number complete with explosions and flames. On it's own, it stands as one of my favorite Miike scenes.

And Gummo is brilliant, no matter what anyone says.

Takeshi Miike is pretty damn good stuff from what I'[ve seen. I'm still obsessed with my "Audition" DVD. Funny when I first saw it at the store I was a little confused and mistook it for my other favorite Takeshi... "Beat" Takeshi... star of "Boiling Point", "Brother", "Taboo", etc... not to mention the Japanese "Bad Lieutenent", "Killer Cop" aka "Bad Cop" or whatever as I can't remember what friggin' kind of cop it's called at the moment. The look in Takeshi's eyes and that twitch he gets when he's staring is unbelievably authentic. One of those actors who you know is just being himself, probably psycho in real life too, at least to some degree. Ishi...

in a span of about a week, i bought city of lost souls, audition and happiness of the katakuris. fucking brilliant movies. just last nite, i bought and watched fudoh. again, fucking brilliant. and as great as the girl-shooting-darts-from-her-pussy was, the best part was the ridiculous amounts of blood spurted forth by the guy in the car.

on a moderately related subject, i recently ordered Battle Royale, after reading the book(one of my favorites, by koushun takami, go get it) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. though i shudder to think about how long i will have to wait to see the sequel.

i finally got ichi in, and watched it twice now. great movie. i want to get his other stuff but i dunno what to get next. it all looks great. one of my friends said, it was the most disturbing film he has ever seen. and another friend said that he never wants to see a movie like that again, and couldn't understand how i've watched it twice. and i got the uncut version with "extra footage" what was extra, i'm wondering? the interviews were good on the bonus disc. and the behind the scenes was cool to watch.

HELL YES FOR MINNEAPOLIS!!! Today was the first day (until the 11th) of a Takashi Miike introspective. They ran Fudoh today, which I missed (but I own it so no biggy). I'm going to see "Happiness Of The Katakuris" tomorrow, "Visitor Q" on Friday, and "Ichi The Killer" next Wednesday. I'm sure they'll be playing others, but this fucking rules. BTW, this is going down at the Walker Art Center.

i am trying to arrange screenings at my school...kaleidoskop films..it was a pain in the ass to start the damn club due to licensing rights and all the legal babble, 3 months later...3 people showed (i premiered my club in late march right during midterm/term paper season)...hopefully i'll get a bigger turn out next year. but in my opinion, miike is too hardcore for the average smalltowner (they congregate at my school...but i am a city gurl). i showed uzumaki and tetsuo for the first screening and tetsuo made them uneasy and we had to talk throughout the film so they can keep their eyes off of the screen. but shinya tsukamoto...i love thee

i saw beat takeshi's new one "dolls" last year at the film festival. i was working the shifts at the time so i didnt really watch the film in its entirety. that's what you get for sneaking into theaters during your shifts (had nothign to do, was supposed to hand out flyers and even though i dont get paid, the experience is worthwhile cause i got to meet a lot of filmmakers, people, funny stories ..and best of all FREE FILM)...i digress..anyway, the first time i saw it i saw it from the last half. the 2nd time i saw it was from the beginning in the projector room. the projectionist was saying how kitano used really high quality lens because the colour contrast and the clarity of it all was amazing. i do agree. there is one scene where the 2 tortured lovers walk pass a wall of those toy wind mill (is that what you call it) of different colours..damn..i love the use of the colours...the reds..very very vivid. but to tell you the truth, the story was blah...which might be biased cause i didnt see the whole thing because i was constantly being paged. but i dont know..visually stunning but lacking substance (sort of like tsukamoto...i really do want to lkove the man but it's purely eye candy which makes sense cause he is an avant garde filmmmaker). i'll shut it now...

dolls..interesting look...he does have a thing for gore. there was htis one scene where the blind man got shot..and he paused the shot..showing us his dead body. perhaps he's making a point (because love goes down the drain...or something) but i dont know at times it seems like he's trying to show us the blood we want to see and he was holding back for the entire film

anybody seen his early commerical work? andromeda? omg..it was unwatchable. rented it at blockbuster while i was in taiwan..and i tried really really hard to watch it..but it's garbage. that and i cant stand the female leads (speed...the ex super popular pop idols in japan who cant sing for their lives..like all the other mfg-ed pop groups..ie morning museme..i mean come on 9 girls and only 2 of them can sing. and the other ones just make random well not random but calculated dance moves to distract the viewers of theiir lack of talent..sighs)..but it does show miike's thing for multinationality thing. god even the white guy spoke with a really bad accent..or was that just bad accent. sighs

miike always does that..throw some (i think cheezy..and he knows it too) CGI at you in the last 20 minutes throwing everythign you expect out the window...some people dig it..some people dont...i on the other hand appreciate audition and visitor q types more so than DOA. ichi was great only because it didnt take itself too seriously..lots of comic relief...it was hilarious

oh..no offense i'm getting sick and tired of koreans ripping off the japanese..i am biased..but meh...

but apparently they were thinking about remaking audition but according to kfc cinema:

No Audition in Korea
Mr Kwang
Rumor says that [Cinderella] (Korean version of [Audition]) seems to be on endless delay, due to lack of budget. Other rumor says actress 'Han Chae Young' leave Korea to visit her home at US. So this rumor could be too real. So we don't have to worry about another remake, or give up hope for another version of [Audition].

I don't like Mario from City of Lost Souls. I mean when he took the shotgun through the office complex he began to reward himself, but his random tongue movements and bizarre facial expressions made him deserving of his fate.

The Yakuza dude needs his own movie.
