Streetlight Manifesto
haha you know your waves <333
i've seen them four times already
and yeah i'm seeing them down here
WE dont get much Ska love on this Coast. We get a decent Ska show maybe once a year. the Toasters just rolled through and that was a Great set and Bomb The Music Industry has made it out here a few times. I make a point to see every Ska show when it comes through. My buddy went to London and saw the Specials, i dont think you can beat that though.
And of course i know my waves, and good Rudy does.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
i love the specials
and we get a lot of ska out here
bomb the music industry was just here but i missed it
but i usually make it to most ska shows here
I saw BTMI 2 nights in a row this last summer, they came into town and decided to stay longer so they played two house shows. It was more than amazing. The first night they played a lot of there old stuff and the second night they went through All of Scrambles. It was great because Jeff and the rest of the band just hung out and drank with us. i have seen them 4 times and it just keeps getting better. What do you think of the new album Adults?
But i would kill to live someplace that had Ska. There are maybe 2 decent local Ska bands floating around and a few punk bands that throw in horns from time to time but thats it.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.
I've seen them twice thus far. I'm a huge ska fan, but not many ska bands ever come around.
i like the cd but it isn't my favorite
and yeah locally, everything is absolutely shit when it comes to the little bands here. south florida does not really have that good of a music scene for local bands
andd that sucks
Oh Florida, i have not been there in years. All Portland has is local punk and indie bands. The local music scene is actually really decent. There are always a couple of house shows a week. Not all of them have good bands but its more or less a good party with music, and there is normally not a cover so that's always good. As long as you dont mind a handful of stinky punks or hipsters that is.
I know what you mean with Adults, its good but not my favorite.
I still have yet to get the new Streetlight album though, its hard to find unless you order it online.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
i can send you a copy through email or whatever if you'd like. it's actually pretty good. :]
all the local shows here are pretty lame. It's all the same shit, some screaming, a breakdown, people "hardcore" dancing.
and yeah i try to stay away from labels or people who feel it necessary to place themself under one. i do like a lot of indie music though. more of the dancey stuff and acoustic. and punk pretty much died after the 80s sadly
Yeah, I dig Streetlight, although I like who they're on tour with more.
(The Wonder Years)
As I'm in Canada, a lot of these bands RARELY come around here. If they do, it's always a year or two after they make it big and play gaudy large shows.
It seems to be that way EVERYWHERE lately.
It's become nothing short of hipster superstardom. You know how every night is gonna end. Some trendy kid is gonna save us all from invisible ninjas while almost hitting you in the process.
I'm not a fan of the "hardcore" dancing.
Hey know Portland has a handful of decent punk bands. And if this sounds possible a really big Folk Punk scene. But yes you are right "Punk" is very much dead. And there is nothing i hate more than hardcore dancing. i have seen folks hardcore dance at Ska shows. You skank at ska shows, people really need to learn this.
But Portland has the kids who hate stereotypes and labels but then just drive themselves deeper into there own "unique" cliche.

The hardcore punk scene died around the same time Ian MacKaye grew a vagina. I for one can't stand hardcore dancing either. Every kid in a v-neck is always willing to show us his ability to destroy the invisible ninjas plaguing this world.
I also don't understand what's with the new influx of "straight-edge" kids either. I always hear people go "I'm straight-edge. I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs." and I always have to ask "Yeah, but do you fuck?" which negates the whole "straight-edge" act.
Its the windmill and the elbow throw that hardcore dancers do that i just cant take. People tolerate it in these parts until someone gets hit who was not part of the general dance area. Its always satisfying when you see someone just tkae out those kids. Dance, enjoy your show. But remember that as soon as you hit someone besides the invisible ninjas that all bets are off.
As for the straight edge, hey if that's what you want to do with your life, thats great, but please dont kill my buzz because im drinking and maybe smoking. But i cant get them shit for fucking, I mean if your not drinking, smoking, or doing your drug of choice, what other vices do you have. But yes it is a weird craze that doesn't seem to make sense.
But no Ska in Canada? i dont know what part you're in but i have a friend in BC who claims that The Planet Smashers are floating around that area constantly. And besides you have Molson, and Silent Sams vodka.

Well, the song 'Straight-Edge' talks about not drinking, smoking, doing drugs or fucking. Hence he has the edge on people. Who knows, being sober gets you nowhere.
Yeah, I'm from Ontario. We had a bit of ska. But mostly the punk scene devolved into the 'hardcore' scene of rich white kids trying to act like they're from the slums. I just don't get it.
I'm more partial to the cheap local whiskey. Canadian Club, Weisers, et cetera.
Whatever, the hardcore kids i used to hang out with were the coolest people i've ever known. There were only a select few who acted like what you guys described. This was quite a few years ago, i'm sure things have devolved since then though. But these guys and girls were cool as shit and most of them didn't come from rich families, they were a bunch of poor kids and fuck-ups. Anyway, that's just my take on things. Those were some of the most fun days i've had.
what the heck is that a dancin ghost?
Ok First wave
second wave
Third wave.
All are good but there are a lot of third wave ska bands that are getting a little to poppy for me. And Then there are the Skunk bands that do some terrible things to ska, but somehow are still fun to listen too. And i just dont feel there was enough second wave out there.

i'll reply to all your comments later because they all look interesting but i'm heading out now to go see the Aquabats <333
have a good day/night/whatever time it is where you are :]
PM me if you'd like :]
Nothing beats the Specials, especially how the fuck about before they start playing, like in "You're wondering now."
*Knock knock knock*
"YOU CAN'T COME IN."

I love there pre-song banter. The Specials really are one of the best Ska bands around. And it seems like every Ska band has covered Little Bitch, or Rat Race.
But there live stuff is my favorite
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
Ska?
...Upbeats, skanking, 2tone. No, nothing sounds familiar?
Take any of the Band names mentioned about and give them a listen, it will make your life that much better.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
The specials are really great... :]
i'm love message to rudy
and idk ska is just like a mix of reggae and punkish i guess?
clever clever
I know what ska is, it's just...never mind.
it's just what? i'm curious now
Just thought i should say my friends and i are performing everything went numb for a show coming up :]
To Bad you're in Florida. And too bad noone seems to know what ska is.
SO whats the name of this Band you are in?
Oh and what Ejrathke was saying is that Ska itself brings the world closer together.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
we don't have a name. it is just a group of twenty or so of us that switch up our groups and play together for different songs.
and that makes sense :]
So your a bunch of band geeks? I miss those days. I really need to dig my trombone back out. but Everything Went Numb is a damn good song.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
I don't personally like ska, but it's not as bad as some of the other shit that's around. I've heard a couple of songs that are pretty interesting, but that dancing is retarded.
i am not in band actually
none of us are.
it's a strange thing
i always wanted to learn a brass instrument but i mostly stick to strings and percussion and piano depending on what you consider that
and i actually really enjoy ska. i know a lot of people find skanking ridiculous but it is fun
To be fair skanking is ridiculous. But i dont know what to say, i love doing it. If there's decent ska going on i just cant help myself. I wish i could pick up strings btu i just cant figure it out. I'm tone def as shit so that doesn't help. Right know im trying to pick up the accordion.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
you are a good man haha
and being tone deaf doesn't really make a difference if you don't try to play your songs by ear. but it does help if you can match pitch
accordion is such a cool instrument!!! i'm saving up for that and a few other things
What is 'skanking'? Is it as degrading/law-challenging as it sounds?
lol it is a way to dance
no it isn't degrading or law challenging
That's obviously hardcore dancing. There's a difference, Fano. Just look at her face.
But are they all doing it? Or just the girl?
>

As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
that girl scares me. She seems to angry to be skanking or anything of the sort. She looks like she's ready to cut a bitch honestly
No, we are just too lazy to think up new dance steps. Punks mosh, Hardcore kids...hardcore dance, hipsters stand around. Rudy's skank. Its amazingly ridiculous.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
I'm the dancing queen.
Just listen to there new album from start to finish, its all covers. Some of them are fantastic like Hell, originally by The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Then there are some like Such Great Heights thats just strange.
but God damn if they dont have the tightest horn section around.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy

Dear god how can you not. They are going on tour this summer and i couldnt be more excited. They are one of my favorite 3rd wave Ska bands.
I saw them last time they were around and they put on a great show
