Name a song that breaks your heart.
Wild horses, The Sundays version.. not The Rolling Stones version.

Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
“The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies but also to hate his friends.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
Watched one of my students (age 9) sing Aloha ʻOe this past weekend. Choked me up.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Big Eyed Fish By Dave Matthews Band.
Story of a man,
Who decided not to breathe.
Turned red, purple, then blue.
Colorful indeed.
No matter how his friends begged,
Well, he would not concede,
And now he's dead.
You see, cause everybody knows,
You got to breathe.
But, oh God,
Under the weight of life,
Things seem brighter on the other side...
Lighter on the other side...
Another one: See this monkey sitting on a tree,
One day, decided to climb down,
And run off to the city.
Look at him now, Tired and drunk
And living on the street.
As good as dead.
You see, a monkey should know,
Stay up your tree.
But, oh God,
Under the weight of life,
Things seem brighter on the other side.
Oh, God,
But under the weight of life,
Things seem much brighter on the other side.
No way, no way, no way.... out... of here...
Another one: A big eyed fish,
Yeah, swimming in the sea,
Oh, how he dreamed.
He wants to be a bird,
Swooping, diving through the breeze.
One day, he caught a big blue wave,
Up onto the beach,
And now he's dead.
You see, a fish's dream,
Should stay in the sea.
But, oh God,
Under the weight of life,
Things seem brighter on the other side.
No way... no way...no way...out... of here...
No way out of life.

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
Anything by Radiohead breaks my heart.
Literally, I'm crying as I post this song. So beautiful.
I don't wanna be your friend
I just wanna be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
And fall off the table, get swept under
Denial, denial
The infrastructure will collapse
Voltage spikes
Throw your keys in the bowl
Kiss your husband goodnight
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll deal mine
Fall off the table, get swept under
Denial, denial
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
Denial, denial
Your ears should be burning
That whole album is just freaking fantastic. Listen to "All I Need" which is about three or four tracks before that.
Actually... here:
**EDIT** I forgot the Scotch Mist version has this weird video intro. Just fast forward to about 1:45
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
This song always gets me, The Decemberists love their suicide pact songs.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
Tom Waits - Alice
Breaks my heart and makes me feel alive. Possibly the most beautiful song I have ever heard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_10TqowM9c
It's dreamy weather we're on
You waved your crooked wand
Along an icy pond with a frozen moon
A murder of silhouette crows I saw
And the tears on my face
And the skates on the pond
They spell Alice
I disappear in your name
But you must wait for me
Somewhere across the sea
There's a wreck of a ship
Your hair is like meadow grass on the tide
And the raindrops on my window
And the ice in my drink
Baby all I can think of is Alice
Arithmetic arithmetock
Turn the hands back on the clock
How does the ocean rock the boat?
How did the razor find my throat?
The only strings that hold me here
Are tangled up around the pier
And so a secret kiss
Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I'm dead in my grave
Set me adrift and I'm lost over there
And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
And by tracing it twice
I fell through the ice
Of Alice
And so a secret kiss
Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I'm dead in my grave
Set me adrift and I'm lost over there
And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
And by tracing it twice
I fell through the ice
Of Alice
There's only Alice
...just lurking.
I can't find it on youtube; the song was there but was taken down. It's the EP version of Dinner Bells by Wolf Parade (the harmonica in it hits me hard).
Dinner Bells:
I heard all your reasons
And I heard all your plans
I have seen the seasons
Crunched up in your hands
You're the one I feather
You're the lion's mane
You swear you heard the weather
Calling out your name
But there'll be no more winter
There'll be no more spring
And there'll be no more dinner bells
Left for you to ring
There'll be no more dinner bells
Dinner bells to ring
The maestro learns the music
Musicians learn to dance
But there'll be no more trumpets
And there'll be no more flutes
No more clapping hands
I heard all your reasons
And I heard all your plans
And I heard of your treason
And I heard all your pleas
And I made friends with the hangman
So there is no more winter
And there is no more spring
And there are no more dinner bells
Left for you to ring
And there are no more dinner bells
Dinner bells to ring
And there are no more dinner bells
Dinner bells to ring
(heartbreaking harmonica, guitars, a 'tock' sound)

Matthew Good Band- I Miss New Wave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxlVgZXo_lA, manily for the lyrics 'gonna die in Coquitlam' just resonates a bit to much, hitting something too close to home.
Matthew Good- Champions of Nothing The entire album of Hospital Music will pull on your heart strings. No good versions on youtube

Neverending White Lights I really can't pick to most heart breaking song form this guy. Pick anyone, and it'll do.
"The rat inside your brain rules the world."
Citizen Kane SUCKED!!!!!!! True fact.
Alcoholism is the cure not the disease.
The Gary Jules version of Mad World and Pearl Jam's rendition of "Last Kiss" get me every time.
Also there is a local band here in Denver (which no longer exists) called Supply Boy and they had a song called "Cry In A Vacuum" and it's about a girl wanting to be a boy. It was so beautiful. I'm hoping to find a copy of that CD before I leave for Portland.
But seriously it's probably one of the saddest songs I've heard.
" Como vivan jusgan ." -Abuebue
" una dia como tu vey a mi , es como voy avede a ti" -Abueabue
" THAT IS IT BROOKE HOGAN THAT IS THE LAST ABORTION." HULKAMANIA
Nice songs people! Good call on the Modest Mouse and Venetian Snares especially.
My weepy one is:
Waiting Room - Return My Rabbits
They were a local band from Cork City, so a last.fm link is the best I can do:

This song is pure upsetting >.<
I wrote the lyrics down by ear so I hope they're right!
Have you had enough, have you had enough of this?
A laugh for every joke, a smile for every kiss.
Does this not, does this not get you down?
You try your hardest to stand out,
But you're just another face in the crowd,
You know what I hate?
I hate to see you look so sad,
No dance left in your eyes,
Dragging out everything you should have had.
Watch your shadow disappear with time,
With every broken promise left behind,
As all your stuttered words give in to rhyme,
So you can fall asleep with peace of mind.
How can you let, how can you let it crawl straight past?
You've given everything you've got,
But you're still not equal to the task.
Does it hurt, does it hurt to see so much joy?
And everyone is moving on
Playing the world like it's their favourite toy.
You know what I hate?
I hate to see you look so sad,
No hope left in your eyes,
Dragging out everything you should have had.
Watch your shadow disappear with time,
With every broken promise left behind,
As all your stuttered words give in to rhyme,
So you can fall asleep with peace of mind,
Well I ain't sure but I've been told,
He's baking cakes inside our souls.
Which Modest Mouse song made it on the list?
Right now its this. This song is even more sad now. Just listen to the lyrics of a tortured soul. Even though he is gone his music will live on. RIP.

Lies, by Stan Rogers. Completely heartbreaking every time.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
My turn to share my emoness, haha. or
My heart is his pinata.
This song is so sad to me. Beautiful, but totally sad.
Yeah, it's painfully beautiful.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
To me the saddest and most beautiful Ray Charles song is :
It's actually perfect for an atheist's funeral.

It's not on youtube, although I will try to get it up there next weekend when I'm near a computer with the necessary software, but until then, this song tears me apart, especially the instrumental ending, but the raw emotive pain throughout as he sings it, and the aura created by the music twisting and rendering the background.
Frog Eyes' ICE ON THE TRAIL:
Oh Action
And Solace
Will never be the same
You are all that I know
You are all I care to know
And there's ice on the trail
There's an old muddy creek
In the captain's bed
As for supper
I'm okay for the winter
I read the poster:
I was told I had a right to your bed
When the train rocks
By the battleships
I recall that you're conservative
You're the pain I feel
When the sun finds its bed
I know information
Is processed and circumspect
Like a seismograph
Singing warning songs
For the pavement
For your movements
For the constant pressure pushing
I will call you by name
In love's song
Love's song

Serge Gainsbourg originally wrote the song for Yves Montand, who turned it down because it hit a bit too close to home with his depiction of a wreck of a woman, a dead dog floating on water. Montand was married to Simone Signoret, an wonderful movie star who used to be a very beautiful woman, but who was in the middle of a decade-long self destruction by drink.
