Name a song that breaks your heart.
MOONSHINER
I've been a moonshiner,
For seventeen long years,
I've spent all my money,
On whiskey and beer,
I go to some hollow,
And sit at my still
And if whiskey dont kill me,
Then I dont know what will,
I go to some bar room,
And drink with my friends,
Where the women cant follow,
And see what I spend,
God bless them pretty women,
I wish they was mine,
Their breath is as sweet as,
The dew on the vine,
Let me eat when I am hungry,
Let me drink when I am dry,
A dollar when I am hard up,
Religion when I die,
The whole world's a bottle,
And life's but a dram,
When the bottle gets empty,
It sure aint worth a damn.
"You Are What You Love" by Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins
YOU ARE WHAT YOU LOVE
This is no great illusion
When I'm with you I'm looking for a ghost
Or invisible reasons
To fall out of love and run screaming from our home
Because we live in a house of mirrors
We see our fears and everything
Our songs, faces, and second hand clothes
But more and more we're suffering
Not nobody, not a thousand beers
Will keep us from feeling so all alone
But you are what you love
And not what loves you back
That's why I'm here on your doorstep
Pleading for you to take me back
The phone is a fine invention
It allows me to talk endlessly to you
About nothing disguising my intentions
Which I'm afraid, my friend, are wildly untrue
It's a sleight of hand, a white soul band
The heart attacks I'm convinced I have
Every morning upon waking
To you I'm a symbol or a monument
Your rite of passage to fulfillment
But I'm not yours for the taking
But you are what you love
And not what loves you back
So I guess that's why you keep calling me back
I'm fraudulent, a thief at best
A coward who paints a bullshit canvas
Things that will never happen to me
But at arms length, it's Tim who said
I'm good at it, I've mastered it
Avoiding, avoiding everything
But you are what you love, Tim
And not what loves you back
And I'm in love with illusions
So saw me in half
I'm in love with tricks
So pull another rabbit out your hat
The Blower's Daughter - Damien Rice
The Scientist - Coldplay (for personal reasons)

Yeah, Toy Story, I don't fucking care!
When somebody loved me,
Everything was beautiful
Every hour we spent together lives within my heart
And when she was sad,
I was there to dry her tears
And when she was happy,
So was I
When she loved me
Through the summer and the fall
We had each other, that was all
Just she and I together,
Like it was meant to be
And when she was lonely,
I was there to comfort her
And I knew that she loved me
So the years went by
I stayed the same
But she began to drift away
I was left alone
Still I waited for the day
When she'd say I will always love you
Lonely and forgotten,
never thought she'd look my way
And she smiled at me and held me just like she used to do
Like she loved me
When she loved me
When somebody loved me
Everything was beautiful
Every hour we spent together lives within my heart
When she loved me
"This Too Shall Pass" by Danny Schmidt
(BTW--all great choices so far, guys (except you, monkey. WTF?))
THIS TOO SHALL PASS
Things change fast
But this too shall pass
Better carve it on your forehead
Or tattoo it on your ass
Cause who can tell
When the clock strikes twelve
If today's become tomorrow
Or if it's all just gone to hell
My friend makes rings
She swirls and sings
She's a mystic in the sense
That she's still mystified by things
But scared to ask
How can nothing last
Cause like a cancer in your body
It all just goes too fast
We think too big
We think our self is one whole thing
And we claim that this collection
Has a name and is a being
But deep inside
When every cell divides
It sets upon the rule that states
Self-interest is divine
Cancer, too
Lives by this golden rule
That you must do unto the others
As the others unto you
All for the best
Cause that's all the life accepts
And so we kill it like a buffalo
With awe and with respect
Don't ask God
Just ask the sky
She'll tell it to you plainly
In the clouds that whisper by
And praise the shapes
And then praise the way they change
And they'll teach you not to pray to light
Without you pray to rain
So I pray to hands
And I pray to needs
And I pray to blades of grass
To find forgiveness in the weeds
But as for health
I just never did believe
And so I never prayed myself
Except to those that prayed for me
The story goes
Or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high
And then he fell too low
And so he called
All the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift
To end the rises and the falls
And here's the thing
They came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly
Unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black
It had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass
Wise Up by Aimee Mann from Magnolia.
It's not
What you thought
When you first began it
You got
What you want
Now you can hardly stand it though
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up.
Judas, thanks. That's the first time I've listened to that song since my dads funeral. He wasn't specifically a Clapton fan but he liked the film RUSH, he liked a good gritty tale based in fact and he heard the song there.
I've sort of avoided the song as obviously it now reminds of his funeral but it also reminded me of the kind of guy he was. Thanks judas, I owe ya one.
The Scientist hits something in me too
Skinny Love by Bon Iver

38 Years Old - The Tragically Hip
Twelve men broke loose in seventy-three
From Millhaven maximum security
Twelve pictures lined up
across the front page
seems the mounties had a summertime war to wage
local chief told the people there ain't nothin to fear
said, 'the last thing they wanna do is hang around here'
Mostly came from towns with long French names
But one of the dozen was a home town shame
same pattern on the table
same clock on the wall
been one seat empty eighteen years in all
freezin slow time
away from the world
he's thirty eight years old
never kissed a girl
he's thirty eight years old
never kissed a girl
We were sittin round the table, heard the telephone ring
Father said he'd tell em if he saw anything
Heard a tap on the window in the middle of the night
held back the curtains for my older brother Mike
See my sister got raped, so a man got killed
Local boy went to prison, man's buried on the hill
Folks went back to normal when they closed the case
they still stare at their shoes when they pass our place
My mother cried the horror has finally ceased
he whispered, 'yeah, for the time bein' at least'
Over her shoulder came the squad car megaphone
said, "Let's go Michael, son, we're taken you home"
same pattern on the table
same clock on the wall
been one seat empty eighteen years in all
freezin slow time
away from the world
he's thirty eight years old
never kissed a girl
he's thirty eight years old
never kissed a girl
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
Townes Van Zandt - Rake
I used to wake and run with the moon
I lived like a rake and a young man
I covered my lovers with flowers and wounds
my laughter the devil would frighten
The sun she would come and beat me back down
but every cruel day had its nightfall
I'd welcome the stars with wine and guitars
full of fire and forgetful
My body was sharp the dark air clean
and outrage my joyful companion
whisperin' women how sweet did they seem
kneelin' for me to command them
And time was like water but I was the sea
I'd have never noticed it passin'
except for the turnin' of night into day
and the turnin' of day into cursin'
You look at me now, and don't think I don't know
what all your eyes are a sayin'
Does he want us to believe these ravings and lies
they're just tricks that his brains been a playin'?
A lover of women he can't hardly stand
he trembles he's bent and he's broken
I've fallen it's true but I say unto you
hold your tongues until after I've spoken
I was takin' my pride in the pleasures I'd known
I laughed and thought I'd be forgiven
but my laughter turned 'round eyes blazing and
said my friend, we're holdin' a wedding
I buried my face but it spoke once again
the night to the day we're a bindin'
and now the dark air is like fire on my skin
and even the moonlight is blinding
Time Square-marianne faithful
In a tired part of the city
Hiding from the fast talk
Watch 'don't walk' to 'walk'
Easy when you're dreaming
Staring at the movies
Standing in a circle,
Laughing at the wrong time.
If alcohol could take me there.
I'd take a shot a minute
And be there by the hour.
Take a walk around times square
With a pistol in my suitcase
And my eyes on the tv.
In a car taking a back seat
Staring out the window
Thinking about danger.
Playing in a wrong world
Fighting? but I'm not free.
Talking on the telephone
Talking about you and me.
If jesus christ could take me here
I'd fall dawn on my knees,
Have no questions to his answers.
Take a walk around times square
With a pistol in my suitcase
And my eyes on the tv.
Alcohol could take me there.
I'd take a shot a minute
And be there by the hour.
Take a walk around times square
With a pistol in my suitcase
And my eyes on the tv.
And if I die gaining my senses
Wake up in a hotel
Staring at the ceiling
Chelsea Hotel No. 2
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street.
Those were the reasons and that was New York,
we were running for the money and the flesh.
And that was called love for the workers in song
probably still is for those of them left.
Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you,
I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."
And then you got away, didn't you babe...
I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best,
I can't keep track of each fallen robin.
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
that's all, I don't even think of you that often.
Oh, wow, me too....
Here's mine -
Dixie Chicks - Lullaby
They didn't have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up
I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow there'll be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up
As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
You can close your eyes when you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I'm never, never giving you up
Also, this one (DON'T MAKE FUN, I CAN'T HELP IT)
You, do you remember me?
Like I remember you?
Do you spend your life
Going back in your mind to that time?
Because I, I walk the streets alone
I hate being on my own
And everyone can see that I really fell
And I'm going through hell
Thinking about you with somebody else
Somebody wants you
Somebody needs you
Somebody dreams about you every single night
Somebody can't breath without you, it's lonely
Somebody hopes that one day you will see
That Somebody's Me
How, How could we go wrong
It was so good and now it's gone
And I pray at night that our paths soon will cross
And what we had isn't lost
Cause you're always right here in my thoughts
You'll always be in my life
Even if I'm not in your life
Because you're in my memory
You, when you remember me
And before you set me free
Oh listen please
Somebody wants you
Somebody needs you
Somebody dreams about you every single night
Somebody can't breath without you, it's lonely
Somebody hopes that one day you will see
That Somebody's Me
Dark Was the Night and Cold Was the Ground

Nobody Home - The Floyd
[vdeo:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QhZ8lJhJqY]
Got a little black book with my poems in.
Got a bag, got a toothbrush and a comb.
When Im a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone.
I got elastic bands keeping my shoes on.
Got those swollen hands blues.
Got thirteen channels of shit on the tv to choose from.
I got electric light,
And I got second sight.
Got amazing powers of observation.
And that is how I know,
When I try to get through,
On the telephone to you,
There'll be nobody home.
I got the obligatory hendrix perm,
And the inevitable pinhole burns,
All down the front of my favorite satin shirt.
I got nicotine stains on my fingers.
I got a silver spoon on a chain.
Got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains.
Ive got wild, staring eyes.
And I got a strong urge to fly,
But I got nowhere to fly to (-- fly to... fly to... fly to...).
Ooooo, babe!
When I pick up the phone!
Theres still nobody home.
I got a pair of gohill boots,
And I got fading roots.

Good call. I especially like the Johnny Cash cover.

The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll-Bob Dylan (But especially the cover version by Phranc)
William Zantzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gath'rin'.
And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him
As they rode him in custody down to the station
And booked William Zantzinger for first-degree murder.
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain't the time for your tears.
William Zantzinger, who at twenty-four years
Owns a tobacco farm of six hundred acres
With rich wealthy parents who provide and protect him
And high office relations in the politics of Maryland,
Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders
And swear words and sneering, and his tongue it was snarling,
In a matter of minutes on bail was out walking.
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain't the time for your tears.
Hattie Carroll was a maid of the kitchen.
She was fifty-one years old and gave birth to ten children
Who carried the dishes and took out the garbage
And never sat once at the head of the table
And didn't even talk to the people at the table
Who just cleaned up all the food from the table
And emptied the ashtrays on a whole other level,
Got killed by a blow, lay slain by a cane
That sailed through the air and came down through the room,
Doomed and determined to destroy all the gentle.
And she never done nothing to William Zantzinger.
But you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Take the rag away from your face.
Now ain't the time for your tears.
In the courtroom of honor, the judge pounded his gavel
To show that all's equal and that the courts are on the level
And that the strings in the books ain't pulled and persuaded
And that even the nobles get properly handled
Once that the cops have chased after and caught 'em
And that the ladder of law has no top and no bottom,
Stared at the person who killed for no reason
Who just happened to be feelin' that way without warnin'.
And he spoke through his cloak, most deep and distinguished,
And handed out strongly, for penalty and repentance,
William Zantzinger with a six-month sentence.
Oh, but you who philosophize disgrace and criticize all fears,
Bury the rag deep in your face
For now's the time for your tears.
I don't know why, but this song always makes me get a huge lump in my throat.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Leadbelly

Ella's Song -Sweet Honey in the Rock
Great song. Along the same line, check out Okkervil River's "Westfall".
WESTFALL
"I’m surrounded, each doorway covered by at least twenty men. And they’re going to take me and throw me in prison. I ain’t coming back again. When I was younger, handsomer and stronger, I felt like I could do anything. But all of these people making all these faces didn’t seem like my kith and kin. Colin Kincaid from the twelfth grade, I guess you could say he was my best friend. He lived in a big tall house out on Westfall where we would hide when the rain rolled in. We went out one night and took a flashlight, out with these two girls Colin knew from Kenwood Christian. One was named Laurie, that’s what the story said next week in the Guardian. And when I killed her it was so easy that I wanted to kill her again. I got down on both of my knees and….she ain’t coming back again. Now, with all these cameras focused on my face, you’d think they could see it through my skin. They’re looking for evil, thinking they can trace it, but evil don’t look like anything."
And going even further is Okkervil River's "For The Captain", but I couldn't find a link to youtube for it. The first time I heard this, I thought it was one of the ugliest songs I've ever heard, but I was fascinated so I listened to it again. Now, I think it's probably one of the 10 most played songs on my i-tunes. The moment his voice pitches during the line "When you meet me in the garden" gives me chills every time.
FOR THE CAPTAIN
Relax, no song is written
It's nothing you thought of yourself
It's just a ghost, came unbidden
To this house
This infection gets stronger every year
This seed in the water of your tear
There's no escaping it
This seed in the water of your tear
the way an unborn baby's ear
Unfolds in your belly
This infection gets stronger every year
This direction of a tear rolling down your cheek
And there's no escaping it
There's no escaping
The thing that is making
Its home in your radio
Bless this tiny alley
We have fallen from tall buildings
We have fallen
Bless the birth of him
The chapel he was killed in
All your tiny flowers
They have sat under the sidewalk
They have waited for the pieces
Of the summer sun to show us
All that is your beauty
All and all that is your treasure
I could smell your skin beside me
Say I hope I'm here forever
Oh but captain with your lovers
With your list of sacred pillows
With your sacred list of children
And the wall where you drew windows
Overlooking tiny gardens
Cut in half by jagged mountains
And the secret sacred sharing
That went on beside the fountain
Where the water waits forever
For a tiny, tiny treasure
That will rise up and recover
That will leave this tiny alley
When you meet me in the garden
With your wings all dipped in cedar
All those spirits brushing past me
Brushing past me in the ether
Say all this is window dressing
All you are is tiny curtains
They will flame, they will flame up
You won't know that you are BURNING!
BURNING!
BURNING!
BURNING!
Also also, I'm normally a sucker for great lyrics, but for being an instrumental, Ratatat's "Breaking Away" chokes me up.
Freedom, ¡f**k yeah!

Man, great recommendation! I think I love this band. I'm listening to tracks on their site right now. The Captain isn't available, unfortunately. But those lyrics are great!
If they're available on the site, also check out Omie Wise, For Real, The Latest Thoughts, It Ends With a Fall, and So Come Back, I Am Waiting--all great songs from different albums over the last 5 years or so.
They have 'It Ends with a Fall, and 'For Real'. For real, this is my new favorite band. Thanks!
in b4 Heartbreaker.
Dad by Venetian Snares.
I think i'm gonna come in this thread and just listen to all these songs tonight. well, maybe not the toy story one. So, everybody, post a youtube for it if there is one, please.
The only other songs in here I've ever heard before are the NIN and the blind willie johnson one.
Yeah, of course. I wouldn't have commented if hadn't...unless my comment included, "I didn't listen."
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
is that a reply to my post? If so, i got no idea what you mean.
Well, maybe you just read the word freedom on the video. Thanks for listening! I am a huge fan of this band. They are "activist gospel" which I just made up. They rarely sing about god.
ok, now it makes a little more sense.
They have 'It Ends with a Fall, and 'For Real'. For real, this is my new favorite band. Thanks!
If you like those and Westfall you might as well just download their entire discography, because everything else falls somewhere in between.

It is complete now two ends of time are neatly tied
A one-way street, she? walking to end of the line
And there she meets the faces she keeps in her heart and mind
They say good byetomorrow, wendy, you? e going to die
They say good byetomorrow, wendy, you? e going to die
Underneath the chilly gray november sky
We can make believe that kennedy is still alive and
We? e shooting for the moon and smiling jackie? driving by and
They say good trytomorrow wendy is going to die
Tomorrow wendy is going to die
I told the priest, ? on? count on any second coming
God got his ass kicked the first time he came down here slumming!
He had the balls to come, the gall to die and then forgive us!
No, I don? wonder why, I wonder what he thought it would get us?
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy? going to die
Hey, hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
Only God says jump
So I set the time
cause if he ever saw it
It was through these eyes of mine!
And if he ever suffered it was me who did his crying
Hey hey, good bye
Tomorrow wendy? going to cry
(tomorrow wendy? going to die)
Tomorrow wendy? going to die
(tomorrow wendy? going to cry)
Tomorrow wendy is going to die
Hey, hey, good bye

Hey, hey, good bye

Here is the video and lyrics for Bon Iver's Skinny Love. He puts so much emotion into this song. I really love the story behind the song as well, how it came to be. If you like it and are interested google the bio. Give the song a chance real quick and watch! Give it a minute though, the talk show creates a bad environment for a really emotional song.
Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer
I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in the moment this order's tall
I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
In the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different "kind"
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines
Come on skinny love what happened here
Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split
I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
Now all your love is wasted?
Then who the hell was I?
Now I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines
Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

Jeff Buckley- Last Goodbye
This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die.
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go:
You gave me more to live for,
More than you'll ever know.
Well, this is our last embrace,
Must I dream and always see your face?
Why can't we overcome this wall?
Baby, maybe it's just because I didn't know you at all.
Kiss me, please kiss me,
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation.
Oh, you know it makes me so angry 'cause I know that in time
I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye.
Did you say, "No, this can't happen to me"?
And did you rush to the phone to call?
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind saying,
"Maybe, you didn't know him at all,
you didn't know him at all,
oh, you didn't know"?
Well, the bells out in the church tower chime,
Burning clues into this heart of mine.
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes, and the memories
Offer signs that it's over, it's over.
Not so much the song itself, but for me, the semi-autobiographical lyrics always break my heart. Except I'm also not as awesome as John C Reilly, but who is, really?
If someone stood up in a crowd
And raised his voice up way out loud
And waved his arm
And shook his leg
You'd notice him
If someone in a movie show
Yelled "fire in the second row,
This whole place is a powder keg!"
You'd notice him
And even without clucking like a hen
Everyone gets noticed, now and then,
Unless, of course, that personage should be
Invisible, inconsequential me!
Cellophane
Mister cellophane
Should have been my name,
Mister cellophane
'cause you can look right through me
Walk right by me
And never know I'm there!
I tell ya
Cellophane
Mister cellophane
Should have been my name
Mister cellophane
'cause you can look right through me walk right by me
And never know I'm there. . .
Suppose you was a little cat
Residin' in a person's flat
Who fed you fish and scratched your ears?
You'd notice him
Suppose you was a woman wed
And sleepin' in a double bed beside one man for seven years
You'd notice him
A human being's made of more than air
With all that bulk, you're bound to see him there
Unless that human bein' next to you
Is unimpressive, undistinguished
You know who. . .
Should have been my name
Mister cellophane
'cause you can look right through me
Walk right by me
And never know I'm there
I tell ya
Cellophane
Mister cellophane
Should have been my name
Mister cellophane
'cause you can look right through me
Walk right by me
And never know I'm there
Never even know I'm there
The only other songs in here I've ever heard before are the NIN and the blind willie johnson one.
My suggestion wasn't on Youtube so here it is on Last.fm.
