Some of my favorite films...
My top 500 flicks of the century that was (subject to change)…in stream-of-conciousness order (I was bored this morning, so I decided to think of all the films I love and wrote them down)… and really I'm expecting the usual "You write too many words, Brock" posts along with the "Anyone can make a list..." posts, so yeah.. I was trying not to take up too much space with an in-depth review of all 500 films, but I can and will gladly discuss any of the films on the list as I have seen them all, and in most cases numerous times as I rewatch my film collection quite frequently. This has been a lifelong obsession, so no... I didn't watch all 500 flicks last night smartass...
... and yes... I left out recent films from after 2000 as I wanted to mention some not mentioned all the time now anyway... and I also left out a lot of foreign films and lesser-known genre's for space sake...
I figurd a list might narrow down films you guys wanted to talk about in the film forum, otherwise I just have to talk about whatever's on my mind, and we can't have that.. now can we?
Lastly... yes, this is just a list... more would take up too much space. Pick one and we'll talk in detail... otherwise... you know what to do with it... and usually I actually hate lists, hence the lack of real order...

... but gee, Alex... I am at work. Why else would I have all this free time? When I'm not at work I have a life... which is why you will never find me here except when I'm at work, and on those four or five days a week, you will never find me here before I get to work or leave in the afternoon... Besides, I didn't pay my phone bill, so I have no internet on my computer at home, and I really don't feel like paying a phone bill ever again as I hate my phone and even when I did have service I never answered it when it rang and it became basically a message machine that I would occasionally check and call people back. People get so controlled by their phones, cell phones, fax machnes, etc... and as I don't depend on thse things to live my life, whereas some people need to for work and others think they need to because they can't stand silence or being alone or whatever... I don't think a phone is all that important. And I still have a cell phone to make calls and use others phones when I need to or even pay phones, I just don't see the point in having a phone when a majority of the time it's someone calling I don't want to talk to, even if they are my friend or relative, etc... and don't know how I got off on a phone tangent, but yeah... I do have to much free time, but I do work and spend much less time here than you might think... prolly cause i hunt-and-peck type so friggin' quick... but yeah... movies... fucking love these bastards...

I'm pretty sure you're in good company on this site dude... plenty o' Hong Kong action film famns reside in these here parts... Personally I can't get enough of the shit... I find myself ordering multiregion foreign dvds from Japan all the time cause I have a hard time finding obscure stuff in stores, and I guess they are all mostly bilingual at least ovver there cause they all come with english subtitles... to bad few theaters play them, maybe an art house now and then...

Brock, why did you like Rounders? (131) I mean yeah, it has Ed Norton and Matt Damon in it, but why?
The only remotely funny part of the film was when John Malkovitch cried-'Son of biach' when losing the poker game.

Thanks for the ask, SnowWhite...
I like Rounders because of several things. Martin Landau gives a superb performance as Matt Damon's law school professor. At once wise, yet also naive as to the ways of the world. I really liked his characterization, reminded me of my uncle...
Also, John Turturro has a great bit part as Damon's old gambling "buddy", who is one of those that just chips away and doesn't bet it all... which relates to life and love as well as cards...
Famke Jannsen [sp?] is great as Damon's old fling, and the "tough guy pimp" [I forget his name] who is after Damon for Norton's debt is a great character actor from other such films as Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam"...
I'm not sure what you mean by "the only funny part", as it was a drama, not a comedy and really I wasn't there to laugh... more to see a slice of life about poker, gambling, friendship, etc... with some great actors. Even Damon's girlfriend... I forget her name too, but she was in "The Thirteenth Floor" with Vincent D'Onofrio and Craig Bierko, does a fine job... fuck it... the whole cast is great... and yeah... Malkovich plays a cartoonish russian mob guy, but the whole Oreo Cookie thing was great, and really even when he is over-the-top, think Knockaround Guys, he is still a great actor... and fun to watch...
And of course, Ed Norton plays the sleaze-bit wonderfully. I prefer him in roles like this rather than as a straight-laced sorta dude like in "People vs. larry flynt"... it's a fun part and a great sleeper film about gambler's and life. The historical touches with the Las Vegas Texas Hold-'em card game dream is great. The photography and score are not overbearing either and set the right tone. At times it felt slow, but yeah, SnowWhite... it's supposed to feel that way... I even like the voice-over work where Damon explains stuff he shouldn't have to explain in most films cause it works for me...

Let me just throw this thought into the mix as well...
I'm a fan of films and acting... in particular I like good acting and good films... however, sometimes I fall in love with a film or a character or whatever independent of the whole picture... meaning some of my favorite films aren't necessarily good films... but they have good acting, or a good story, or good cinematic value, or they just friggin' fascinated me with something about it... a particular scene, a certain shot, a song placed perfectly over the action, etc... and that's why I'd probably never be much of a critic, as I tend to romanticize cinema more than most...

Why the Christ would you take the time to rank your top 500 movies? Top 10, everyone does that. Top fifty, I might do that. Top 100, Marc Summers the OCD game show host might do that.
How much time did you put into this?
Were there rough drafts or was this off the top of your head?
Never get so attached to a poem you forget truth that lacks lyricism.
Jesus, I was thinking the same. Must have had the help of some type of amphetamine, thats for sure. You still rockin the absinthe Brock?
Suck me beautiful...
Ah, absinthe.
Absinthe explains just about anything.

It took very little time, less than half an hour for sure. I did not rank my favorite films, as I said in my earlier post... it was stream-of-consciousness. I simply clicked 1-500 on my bullet-headings, then starting thinking of movies I like... that's why you may notice some connections in the order... or at least connections according to how I think...
for example: If I think of Dracula I think of Gary Oldman then I think of him in Sid & Nancy which makes me think of the sex pistols on a boat in the movie in England which makes me think of The Long Good Friday with Bob Hoskins, which then makes me think of British gangster films which then leads me to The Krays, which was directed by Peter Medak who also directed Peter O'Toole which makes me think of Lawrence of Arabia which brings me to D.H. Lawrence who inspired Anais Nin to write The Story of O which is touched on in Henry and June which makes me think of Uma Thurman who's married to Ethan Hawke who was in Waterlands with jeremy Irons who co-starred in Damage with Juliette Binoche who was in Chocolat with Alfred Molina and Johnny Depp, then from that Boogie Nights and Donnie Brasco pops up and Pacino to the godfather to Brando to A streetcar named desire to Rebel without a cause and james dean and Elizabeth taylor to... on and on... this paragraph took roughly under 2 minutes to type... and less than a half minute to think of... I type much slower than I think I guess...
what possesed me was I was bored and I was thinking of Six Degrees of Kevin bacon and well my mind went off and i thought i'd friggin share... rough drafts aren't necessary when I get in a rhythym... I just start typing, like most of my posts, and i have a hard time stopping.. the opposite of writer's block I presume...

to bad few theaters play them, maybe an art house now and then...
Last week I went to the theater to see Fulltime Killer. I found it very enjoyable and was glad I had the chance to see it in theater. Going to these art house theaters are the only times in recent years that I do not have the problems discussed in "the Lowest Humans" thread. Of course, this has it's down side as well. I saw a very quiet Fassbinder film at an art house theater and anytime you even slightly moved in your seat it seemed so loud.

I see what you're getting at, Wesley... but it actually has to do with a trilogy... in fact, very similar to the Godfather, with Chow Yun-Fat as the catalyst for the mob/yakuza family... there is "A Better Tomorrow III also, but it was titled "Bullet in the Head" and directed by John Woo, and was more of a prequel that took place in Vietnam and really had little to do with the first two besides the characters... the one image that sticks out in my mind is a Chow Yun-fat lighting his cigarette with a 100-dollar bill... the movies are in fact about a fortune gained from counterfeiting and the black market... somewhat dated as the clothing and synthesizer music is pretty early 80's as well, but still, even the best films can seem anything but timeless...

Yes... this is a problem in art houses... There are several in neighboring cities that I go to when something is playing that they would never show at a megaplex, but the drawback is usually an old ass theater with broken down seats and no air-conditioning or something... there is one however that is this old theatre, with plush velvet seats that recline and carvings on the wall and a chandelier and all that old crap.... balconies etc... and it's pretty fun to watch flicks at. They show great midnight flicks like Bottle Rocket or Fight Club or Reservoir Dogs or Midnight Cowboy, etc... during the summer, and they have a bar/lounge to get plastered at before, during and after the show...
