This is really shitty news to wake up to. And I...Kl0pper's avatar is totally throwing my train of thought completely off the rails, damnit. Anyways, byebye Johnny.

This had me fucked up. I was just making a humorous Macromedia Flash tribute to John Ritter, being the asshole that I am, and all of the sudden I hear Cash died.

I highly suggest mourning by singing along with "We'll Meet Again" from American IV. I guess it was originally an old WWII pilot's song - they'd go to the bars and sing that the night before going out over Europe. That song tears me up. And now, even moreso.

Yeah, I also assumed Cash would follow shortly after his wife. But Ritter?? He was in his, what, fifties? I wanna cry, but the librarian would probably kick me out.

This is pretty scary shit. I mean, Johnny Cash's death, although still tragic, was a little more expected. The man had "cheated" death for quite some time. But John Ritter? That one is out of the blue. The man was on the comeback trial. May both of them RIP.

I wouldn't consider myself an authority in the least; the Man was just so damn prolific, plus the length of his career is mind-bogglig in terms of today's 'artists'...

Off the top of my head, I'd say get At San Quentin and At Folsom Prison as a good place to start.

Go here: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=MISS70307091154&sql=Bdq6htr29kl4x to read about his 130+ hit singles and scores of albums. Then you can kinda get a feel for his music and take it from there.

San Quentin and Folsom Prision are perfect buys to get into the "old" Johnny Cash. And of course, everybody has to have all 4 "American" albums of the "new" Cash. Personally, I consider "Solitary Man" as the best, but the others are also duty to buy. And damn - Cash even was already working on "American V" ... It's so sad I don't have words for it.

I've heard that over there in America, there is a special edition of "American IV" with an extra "Hurt" video DVD - is this true?! Damn, I need to have it!!!

Definitely pick up the Johnny Cash/Willie Nelson VH1 Storytellers CD. It's fuckin' great. Most of the old stuff is great as well...go for the prison albums.

I haven't heard the Storytellers disc, but it's supposed to be fantastic. The second Highwaymen album is also supposed to be quite worthy, but you're veering further away from pure Cash there.

My suggestion :
- a copious Sun compilation
- Live at Folsom
- Live at San Quentin
- 'Love, God, Murder' compilation (3 CD)
- the 4 american CDs

An excellent suggestion for starters.

Sadly, there isn't a definitive Sun compilation, though Original Golden Hits, Vol. 1 may be closest.

Be nice if a Sun boxset were ever issued.

By the way: I've read that Cash has already recorded over 50 new songs with Rubin for "American V" - although the labels now will definitely try to make money with a lot of average compilations, the release of this stuff could be a real worthy legacy ...

By the way, my Sun years compilation (30 songs, cheap label) didn't cost me more than 15 Euros (about 15 USdollars) when I bought it

The "Hurt" video makes me cry, man. It's one of the most intensive things I have ever seen.

Tonight, MTV Europe shows "VH1-Storytellers" with Cash and Nelson. Everybody who doesn't have the CD, buy it. As somebody wrote before, it is really pure and beautiful. Not as essential as the American CDs, but you need to have it.

This has been a fucked up week. The week begins with Warren Zevon kicking the bucket and now Cash and Ritter go within hours of eachother.

And the guy from Hogan's Heroes went too. you know, the black guy.

Everyone huh... a bunch of old guys... and Cash is the only one that bothers me. He's such the way I've always wanted to be. He is my Tyler Durden. His autobiography motivates me daily, and his music...well, it's what I want the soundtrack of my life to be. If ever someone was worthy of being a cultural icon, it was Johnny Cash. I saw him back in 1996 with June in Dallas at the Majestic Theatre, and it pretty much was the only concert I've ever been to that had any impact on me other than being just a bunch of music. I don't know what else to say. He was lean and mean as they came back in the day, he grew older, fucked-up over and over, drugs addiction, death, all sorts of bad shit surrounded him, but through it all he used his experiences to better the lives of others. It is truly too bad that when this generation dies, few will remember him in the next. I mean, how many music sensations can you name from the 1940's? Still, I've got his music, and until I die or it becomes destroyed, I'll always have that which made him heard...
