realizations.
it's not terrible, it's just that people think it's a far more important film than it actually is.
So your saying it doesn't suck, it just isn't amazing.
I think I agree with you on that one. It's just aggravating because there is so much shit that you have to think REALLY hard about before you understand it.
Donnie Darko wasn't hard at all to understand.

exactly. My main problem is when kids watch it and think it's very deep. It's not.
It is very deep, but just because it's deep doesn't mean it's not easy to understand.
i dunno im inclined to agree with phoenix but I did enjoy the movie very much.
When I first watched it I didn't understand the ending. I thought about it for a while, and I get the part that Donnie decided to die at the end so he could save Gretchen. But in the mean time, why would Frank want Gretchen dead in the first place? And why would he make Donnie do all those things?
And no, it isn't deep. It's about divine intervention, but there's no moral. It's just a story.
Well the people I watched it with didn't realize that the movie was about finding God and they still went around talking about it like it was the most thought-provoking thing they had ever seen. I guess it's just one of those pseudo-intellectual things to talk about over your latte at Starbucks.
Or maybe I'm an idiot and had it wrong.
Then again, I might be wrong.
My problem is people like: "well he could be schitzophrenic the whole time, but he could not be..."
that's the whole fucking point!!!
there's nothing to look into here!
Donnie Darko is classic emperor's new clothes. It's well-made, it has some laughs and some genuinely creepy moments, but it's fans seem to be reading all kinds of profound, deep meaning into it, mostly of their own design. There isn't anything to be found.
I'm willing to wait for his second movie in order to confirm that Richard Kelly is simply whistling in the dark.

I think it's entirely possible that he made the movie intentionally without any real purpose. Like maybe it's a bunch of unrelated things, just to mess you up.
Although many people disgree, I don't think Donnie Darko is one of the most important films ever made. It is a good film though, and I think it what makes it great is it's ability to work on many different levels. It's not hard to understand, like XChuck said, but it does make you think a bit and can be discussed between friends.
It could just be a very strange romance.

Some people are just so happy to find a movie that is a little different and new, and doesn't suck completely and is not a re-vamped old TV show, that the tendency is to praise it and make a big deal out of it in order to encourage more movies like that to be produced. To speak up as an audience.
I also think a lot of people identified with Donnie's character. He spoke up for himself and he was bold. A lot of teenage guys wish they could be like that.
I watched it with my ex-boyfriend and he happily said Donnie was just like he used to be. Yeah, right! Not true but he was telling himself that.
I don't really care if it's deep or meaningless or whatever, it doesn't matter. I liked it. I mainly just liked the whole Smurfs discussion.
Mother Superior: "Would sir care for a starter? Some garlic bread perhaps?"
Renton: "No, thank you. I'll proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please."
There's just never enough room for all the quotes that seem necessary.
I loved the movie, but I agree that it is over-rated and people often try to use it as a tool to come off as intellectuals. "You see, the real meaning behind Donnie Darko was... I'm a total fake and everything I say is bullshit."
You wanna know one of the most important films ever made? New Wave Hookers 3. Now that's a good flick!

Everything will go smoothly this week, except for the part with the
monkeys and the cream pies.
It's not especially deep.
If you see the extra features (and how crap they are) your view of it is most likely to be completely different-they make it out like it's only a teen movie.
I thought it was a good movie, but nothing too special. I mean, first off, whoever wrote it couldn't decide whether he agreed with Fatalism or not (just like Minority Report). It had a nice flow most of the time, but many parts were needless and for shock value, it truley is a perfect example of pseuto-intellectual teen angst movie. Its worth a watch, but it doesn't deserve to be in the top 50 movies of all time on IMDB.
