Queer Eye for teh Straight Guy
oh yeah its great
just like pam grier did wonders for the black community
idiots
Kl0p, if you're implying that Queer Eye is exploitative towards gay people, I question if you've actually watched the show. If it exploits anyone, it's the dumpy straight boys and their sexual insecurites and poor taste.
no i havent watched the show, actually
but this gay empowerment thing is bullshit
straight guys arent insecure, or have poor taste
and gay guys arent secure with good taste
people is people
stick your dick in whatever you want to
just dont pretend it makes you better or worse

Yep
yup...i love the show. that and sex and the city are the only shows i watch. i'm writing a paper on the feminziation of men in recent times...so i'm going to be watching queer eye and taking notes as it will be one of my primiary resources
my frien dheather saw it and was like..i think thye expect the guys to take notes (because of all the segements during and after where they flashed tips of the trade)...and yes they should. its funny i always tell her that wouldnt it be cool if they came into your life and totally makeover your striahgt guy? as in make him into a slob, invite the fab5 into your space and watch him get makeover and get all the freeeeeeee stuff.
and i dotn know if you noticed..but all the straight guys are really cute/goodlooking. so there is a standard i think

taking a very negative stereotype and flipping it positively is just as bad
it limits gay people just as much, now all that prancy bullshit is still expected, its just that you dipshits applaud instead of giggle
Nah, I haven't noticed that they're all good looking. Some are. A lot are average and overweight (to put it kindly).
Kl0p, the show is not a metaphor for real life, nor was my statement all encompassing. If you had actually watched the show, you'd realize that it's five astoundingly tasteful gay men, making over dumpy, vaguely insecure straight boys. Not all straight boys are insecure, and not all gay guys are tasteful. It's not a microcosm, it's cable television. However, the fact you are so bitterly arguing over a show you've never even seen certainly brings up several questions about your own insecurities...and stuff.
nice lawyer trick
of course its not a metaphor
its tv
popular tv has a habit of becoming reality
friends for example
im insecure because i hate BLATANT exploitation shows
ok
OBviously

I thought about half of them were handsome and the rest just average. I do like how they will make over a variation in lifestyles. Some are married, some divorced, some dads, some single, some with girlfriends, etc.
Anyway, in your paper do you think you'll mention any change in gender-specific behavior expectations in women in the recent past?
I mean, for example, in the early 80s when more women were going into the work place in executive level jobs and being the boss lady and how they were encouraged to be more "masculine" (traditionally meaning unemotional, competitive, aggressive) because taht was the atmosphere of the male-dominated work place. And then they made those great 80s movies like Working Girl and 9-5 about women taking their own style of getting the job done and feminizing the work place. OK so they weren't great movies but anyway....are you going to say that there is a blend of behaviors now? That it's not so much masculine or feminine to do one thing or the other, but that we are all starting to become more balanced in our level of socially appropriate interest in things that were previously deemed manly or womanly?
Can I read your paper when you're done?
well its a huuuuge media inquiry paper that is due at the end of march. i have to write up a 6 page proposal of it by tuesday. no i dont think i will talk about the females as then, it would be too big. i want to look at ads, men's magazines such as gq (but not maxim-esque), tele, and film and separate it in those sections. i have to sit down and really think about all this
if you can help me..that'll be great
and i really dont know all that much as of yet...so going on instincts and what i've been bitching about.
and yes of course you can read it. i am not looking forward to it cause it might be too too academic..i dotn know
i have a lot of ideas..and you'll be hearing aobut it..lol

Does everything these days have to be labeled as 'exploitive' or '[insert other words here that show you care waaayy too much about the political implications of television]'? I don't like a lot of TV. Therefore, I don't watch a lot of TV. So simple it's almost mind-boggling, isn't it?
I've watched one or two episodes of this show, and I thought it was funny. It never occurred to me that this show could be construed as bad, or stereotypical. I just thought it was funny. Dislike it because you think it's not funny, or because you hate reality shows, whatever. But dear God, stop with the labeling and the categorization and the pondering of the social implications of every damned thing.
There is hope, but not for us.
i think its very tongue in cheek
yes they know they're taking a well-known stereotype that gay men are better dressers/have been taste...so they make fun of it and use it to their advantage. and they have fun with it. in the process they get a lot of straight men ...better..
all things keep on getting..better

if you watched the show you would see, as i stated in my original post, that they all aren't the flaming gay stereotype that you would expect to see.
and...
to someones earlier point--
but will and grace is actually funny, unlike this
life's pretty straight without vidalia :You_Rock_

okay, i'll admit it would be cooler if there was one straight guy who had an animated eye...and that eye itself was "queer"...just the eye.
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL A SHOW! here i come ABC!
You're a genius. I would watch that show.
There is hope, but not for us.
these two statements contradict each other

i like the show. and i am being completely serious.
i have talked to men that i feel would normally be the most homophobic bastards ever...and they watch the show and like it too.
my point is, i think that it is doing something good for the gay community. you have shows like will and grace, where will is gay, but his sexuality is basically swept under the rug, and all jokes are made about him being gay, and to me, that does nothing but hurt the gay community.
queer eye has 5 completely different people, all who are gay, but also show that all gay guys are not like flaming gay carson (or whatever his name is, the blonde fashion one). to most of the people on this board, this is not a new radical idea, that gay people are just like regulars and have different personalities and act differently, but to most americans, this is a new concept.

Absolutely agree and I unabashadly love, love, LOVE this show.
