THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
worst list they've ever made.
There was a lot of stuff I wanted to check out on this list that I hadn't heard of. I couldn't believe there were like 4 or 5 Subpop bands on this list. I will be busy screening all this shit. (thanks for the sharelink lofi)
I will now completely bore you with a long post about what I think (that is my opinion and not to be taken as me thinking I know what I am talking about) of the portion of this list that I can speak for.
These fall under the "I've heard of these guys in the hipster music magazines I read but haven't gotten around to checking them out yet" category:
• Deerhunter
• No Age
• Hot Chip
• Crystal Castles
• Caribou - I thought this was a black metal band????
• Panda Bear
• Male Bonding - I think I might have actually seen a video of these guys but I don't remember being impressed
• Die Antwoord - I really want to hear these guys cause it's a male and female rap duo from South Africa and they seem weird. But I'm skeptical because it's a male and female rap duo from South Africa
These fall under the "I have heard these guys" category:
• Broken Social Scene - Good music but really long songs, which I am usually not a fan of. This stuff seems to be made for movie soundtracks. I have to give these guys the old college try someday soon.
• Liars - Good stuff - need to pick up this album and more albums by Liars.
• Spoon - Never a disappointment to me and I need this new album, which I forgot came out.
• Gorillaz - Meh. If I hear it at a party I might bob my head a little while everyone else recites it word for word and has breakdancing competitions.
• LCD Soundsystem - I listened to this album for a week and got burnt out. I think it's unique, but there are only like 3 tracks I could actually say I like.
• Yeasayer - I got this album and I was disappointed about all the buzz. It's a snoozefest.
• Vampire Weekend - See above
• Beach House - +15 hype points - 20 suck points which makes this an ok album at -5 suck. I saw them on Conan the other night and I made myself go to bed.
• Arcade Fire - Never fail in blowing my mind with their pure awesome rock and roll-iness. Get this and all Arcade Fire stuff ever made.
These fall under the "Women with good singing voices but I don't own any of their shit" catagory
• Alecia Keys - I will marry Alecia Keys someday and make her listen to indie rock until she writes the perfect song. She has it in her.
• Erykah Badu - I like her hair
• Janello Monae - I like her hair.
• Sade - Is this the same Sade from the 80's? I liked her hair I think.
These fall under the "I think most hip hop is boring" category
• Kanye - Most over-rated artist ever. He has some ok songs, but -50 for being a self proclaimed genius. He might have tweaked hip hop a little, but not enough to make me care.
• Big Boi - I wish Outkast was still making cool songs. Big Boi has taken the long hard journey to mediocrity.
• The Dream - Who. Gives. A. Fuck.
These fall under the "Lady Gaga sucks even though she has a little bit of integrity cause she writes her own songs but her songs sound like Christina Aguilera trying to be artsy and clever and I am tired of looking at her" category
• Lady Gaga - Nuff said
• Die Antwoord - I really want to hear these guys cause it's a male and female rap duo from South Africa and they seem weird. But I'm skeptical because it's a male and female rap duo from South Africa
Die Antwoord are fucking great. Totally odd vibe from them, and what you have to understand about them is that Die Antwoord is really part rap group, part performance art. Both of them are playing personas (the DJ is a different guy in each video and interview)and as more and more stuff comes out you kind of get a better idea of who they are.
For instance, in this video, they go shopping and talk about the sort of stuff they bought. It is very telling to me that Ninja (the main dude) buys a stack of Aphex Twin albums, and Eraserhead because he loves David Lynch.
Either way, their album $O$ is really good. They are phenomenal live. I caught them at a midnight show in Chicago in October and was blown away at the energy.
That shit is crazy! I'm gonna pick up what I can find from them. That track is like in your fuckin face. It's def something I would check out live if I ever had the means. Thanks for the info.
Also, Chopper is a badass movie and Eric Bana is the spittin image of my dad in the late 70's
Pitchfork's informative -I'll give 'em that, but extremely pretentious. Also a little biased. If they don't like you anymore, you're not getting a good review no matter what you put out.
Check these out if y'all get the chance:
1. systemshock: virus electro (ridiculous name and a stupid looking band, but unbelievably good once you hit play).
2. The Dead Weather: Sea of Cowards (didn't want to like this, but... It's much tighter than their debut and actually fun to listen to).
3. City of Fire: City of Fire (Fuckin' awesome from beginning to end).
4. Norma Jean: Meridional (they have some naysayers, but they also have some fine songs).
Agree with Dj_iii about rap overall. It's boring these days, but here's some interesting ones that I think delivered this year:
1. Black Milk: Album of The Year (not sure why this isn't getting more attention -it's appropriately titled as far as rap albums go).
2. Ghostface Killah: Apollo Kids (came out 2 days ago, right in time for year's end -and it's one of his Best).
3. DJ Premier Presents... Year Round Records: Get Used To Us. (Digital only from what I can find, but really good. Great mix of old school and new artists).
4. Son of Bazerk: Well Thawed Out (only 8 songs -this should've been longer).

Yeah, I've been following them for over a year now and the story just keeps getting more and more interesting to me. From what I've read, Ninja intends Die Antwoord to be a 5 album project, with a series of films. They also seem to have some connections with Neill Blomkamp (District 9).
The monster in the 'Evil Boy' video is a Tokoloshe, in this video DA travles around South Africa to learn about them

Might as well toss in the 'Enter the Ninja' video too
I totally dig The Dead Weather - didn't know they had a new one I have got to grab that.
I'll check out the others and the hip hop suggestions too - cheers.
No clue what that list was all about. I thought I was pretty hip, but maybe not.
I'm also kinda surprised that they didn't slobber all over daft punk anywhere.
Are Daft Punk on the outs with being hip now that they're becoming so popular?
I guess that is a pretty stupid and obvious question.
• Caribou - I thought this was a black metal band????
Uh, what?
I've only listened to 4 of those songs.
That is how out of touch with music I am.

My world and welcome to it.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'm pretty much in the same boat too except I go out and try to find new music to get into by reading trendy music magazines (which 19 year old me would kick my ass for). I'm usually pretty disappointed but sometimes I find some ok stuff. Most of the time I get a little disgusted with the world as a whole.
What's with all the animal names in bands lately? How is that setting yourself apart? Oh I'm so indie, my band is named after an endangered species.
Talk about bandwagon.
*shuffles through Boston, Chicago, Kansas and Alabama LP's looking for Manhattan Transfer*
*not really*
*Though I do have some Boston, and one song by Kansas*

I'm not much of a fan, but those first two Chicago albums are pretty bad-ass.
You would hate my new band Duck Billed Platypus then. We sound like Vampire Weekend but more sensitive.

Since I am musically-challenged when it comes to actually playing instruments, It's become my dream to write a story where I somehow need a band, just so I can call them Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Band.
That's not really my bands name, just in case you didn't pick up the sarcasm. But if I had a band these days you have inspired me to name it magic eight ball! And we'll do a bunch of coke and perform magic!
Maybe not.
Oh, and Nate, Chicagos first couple albums were pretty damn good. But after that I can't figure out what is Chicago and what is Peter Centura doing Karate Kid soundtrack songs.
And then they would have to somehow save the day by forming a roller derby league and you could call it Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Band: The Roller Derby Team
lol sounds like some old Chevrolet model!
You should've used <*sarcasm*> tags.
But seriously. I got it. *rolls eyes sarcastically*

I'm givin you gold here, Nate.

Ha Sorry. I've been dipping into my latest batch of bathtub gin today. I don't think it's ready yet. My vision is blurry.
you went too far and ruined it!

That's good to hear. For a moment, I thought it was my eyes going all funny.
Wait...

Here is Paste magazine's best of list. You can listen to the tracks in full +5.
Lately? This has been a thing for 5+ years.
List is equally awful as Pitchforks, just with less hip-hop and slightly more mainstream on the indie side.
There are a couple decent bands on there, even if the tracks they chose aren't the best. But, yeah, for the most part it's pretty awful.
Lately? This has been a thing for 5+ years.
Which goes to show how into indie music I am.

It was a pretty bad year for new music, but these lists make it seem even worse than it actually was.
Lately? This has been a thing for 5+ years.
it'll be hilarious when, eventually, they get some of those animals off the endangered species list. Then they'll all look so goofy!
The only possible good thing to come of it would be if when the species died out the bands named after them died also.
It was a shit year for music and why is Rhianna all over that list? She's the worst, she doesn't sing she yells. Just like Beyonce.
The only thing I've ever heard from Rhianna before was when she was on SNL. and not even her performance on there, just the digital shorts with her and Shy Ronny.
They were pretty funny.
I'm not really a fan of either, but Beyonce definitely has better pipes than Rihanna.
I wouldn't know from Rhianna if you punched her album up my ass with a hammer.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'd only do that if you absolutely insisted
Some folks'd pay a lot of money for that.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'd bang both the black wimmins.

I mean, would you wear the Catwoman suit?
This is why we can't have nice things.
Sadly, my Catwoman suit is back in Australia
DAMNIT!
I mean, euw, gross!
This is why we can't have nice things.

I'm only listing people on that list that I am familiar with them existing. If I posted the songs they listed that I've actually heard it would be ZERO!
