Phish and The Love Below
Both are completely different. However both rule.

I hate Phish the same way I hate The Grateful Dead, although I've never really heard any of either's music...

i've heard phish and the dead and they suck, the only thing phish ever did that was halfway good was when they covered the entire Dark Side of the Moon album

I'll tell ya something... I like Pink Floyd alright, I like them a lot more when I am on acid... but yeah, even Pink Floyd is old now. It's like they play it on classic rock stations over and over and I'm embarassed to even like it anymore. I can't ever imagine listening to something old and boring except covered by someone even more old and boring. That would be like The Rolling Stones covering acoustic symphonic Metallica, not that Metallica is any worse than any other fucking lame ass band that performs tired heavy metal acoustic with a friggin' symphony for chrissake... that's not rock... not even close... that's something else... something much, much lamer... it was maybe fine the first time with the band YES but like get over it already with the fucking symphonies...

well i think its okay to still like floyd, but not so much the really popular albums, more of their stuff that doesn't and never will make it to the radio, not like i listen to the radio anyway, since i don't feel like hearing the darkness and good charlotte all goddamn day, oh yea and once again jam bands suck, including phish, the dead, and widespread panic and all their gay ass offshoot bands that have dumb names

really, it's okay to like whatever you want to like, popular or not, I'm just saying that Pink Floyd at one time, when I was younger, meant a lot more to me than it does now, I mean, any day now, you will "comfortably numb" as background music for a Vick's VapoRub commercial. "Money" will be the trademark jingle for Bank of America. It's all so depressing... and I've never heard The Darkness, but with a name like that, you just know they ain't 'dark'... sounds like one of those lame eighties hair-bands who play love ballad heavy metal... ooooh... look at me! I'm Dark! I am a moody rock star! I am so cool! And Good Charlotte, well... that's just a lame band name period. I have never seen or heard them either but it reminds me of a much better band, the name that is, the stone roses or one of those brit-moody bands on alt-rock stations... agreed about 'jam bands'...

I don't like Floyd. But, they have one or two songs i can tolerate listening to. The dead is alright, again, they've got a good song here and there. I'm especially partial to 'ripple'. However, Phish is absolutely horrible. And unfortunately, i've heard more phish than i have dead and floyd combined, cause my best friend/onetime roomate is(was? i hope he's grown out of them) a huge fan of them, and would always play their shitty bootlegs. I mean, there wasn't ONE good song i heard. Not one. And i mean, who goes to their concerts sober? I'm sorry, i like to get tossed just like anyone, but if i can't enjoy a concert UNLESS i'm fucked up, then they aren't a good band.
the love below... are you talking about a band called that? or outkast's album?
i guess he is referring to Andre 3000's album which is pretty good
I am talking about Andre 3000's awesome album.
Okay, it's not awesome, but its got its moments, and Andre is the man.
leo, what phish are you listening to?
Everything. It's great stuff, I don't understand how anyone who appreciates music doesn't like it.
it's because they've heard one or two songs and decided they didn't like 'em because "hippies" do. which is cool, i guess. everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
what would you say your favorite show or cd is, leo?

I agree that Phish is a great band. I have been to about 18 shows but haven't seen them in about 3 years. If you are a fan of good music you should listen to one of their live shows. You might not be into the whole scene or style of music but each band member musically as a musician IMO is as talented as any other musician playing now.
Let the bashing begin...
the guitarist did do something interesting with Les Claypool called Oysterhead, what's his name trey anastasio or somehting like that?

I've heard zero songs, and I know of no people who aren't hippies or otherwise fucked-up who listen to Phish and enjoy it. Not counting you or leonard. Not counting people who think VH1 is "rockin' good times". Not counting the guy who camps out by the deserted, overgrown reservoir who drives the '69 Volkswagen Van with the tie-dyed curtains covering the windows that are permanently fogged from ganja smoke and incense sticks, the entire left side door, not counting the hand-painted Woodstock '99 regalia and the "Keep On Truckin'" bumpersticker stained the color of stale coffee, covered in muddy mud. Only people I know who listen to that shit are people who are hippies or burnouts or laid-back easy-listening 30-something mentalitied Lillith Festival enthusiasts...

Don't mean to bash, but there are millions of good musicians out there. Why would I go to a concert to see a band that plays a musical style that I don't like just to see a bunch of "talented" musicians in a world full of "talented" musicians. I mean, I could see if a band had like a Jimmy Page or something in it, then I could ignore Robert Plant and be happy, or like Jimi Hendrix sans 'The Experience' aka the white guy so-called "talented/talentless" musicians who clung to him... and if there are so many 'talented' musicians in Phish, why don't they actually become a famous band, or even more polular, and why do those musicians hang out instead of becoming rich? Don't tell me... artistic integrity? Whatever...

I'm not telling you to go to one of their concerts I said listen to one. There are tons of live shows on cd. And as far as becoming rich? What does that have to do with anything? Every year they are one of the top grossing touring bands out there. That's how you make the money. Off tours not selling cd's and being played on the radio. But I don't blame you for not liking them. I am one of the least open minded people when it comes to music. i know what i like and don't like. But I am open for recomendations. What's a band or album i should listen to???

I am telling you... I know what I like, and I don't like Phish, and that is not dependant on whether or not I have listened to their suck-ass music. Money has to do with everything. If those talentless talented musicians could be making it, they wouldn't be making peanuts touring with a top-grossing band that plays for hippies and hippie-minded non-hippies and space cadets of the world who have no taste in music and will pretty much listen to any crap you play for them and think it is genius. I have no recommendations, because i like so much music. Toomuch in fact. There are so many great "talented' musicians out there tht i don't know where to begin. I hearken for the olden days when there was only like three talented musicians to choose from. There is just way too many musicians making music these days. Seriously, who buys all these fucking records and listens to all these fucking songs? I could live to be 200 years old and never get through this year's cd releases alone...

when i'm sober, i really can't stand phish much, but if i've been drinking or what not, i actually kind of enjoy phish. go figure...
Brock, do your research for a change. Phish tours mostly alone and sells out huge arenas alone.
Who obviously have no credibility behind your statements, as you have openly said that you have never heard a single song, and you don't know a single thing about them.
And at least listen to a band's music before you bash it.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Phish tours alone? Phish sells out arenas? What the fuck does that have to do with anything. That other Phish dude brought that shit up. I just mentioned that if all the musicians in Phish are so individually talented as he makes them out to be, then why the hell would they be playing in Phish, who yes... make some money, which gets split like 50 zillion ways, much like Grateful Dead... and those guys sold out arenas and toured alone at times, and none of them were ever individually hugely successful or anything...
Why on earth do you think a bunch of talented musicians would tour with Phish year in and year out for as many years as they have been around? Because they are broke ass motherfuckers who don't get paid squat because they can't make any real money on their own, because they suck, so they heap together like some kind of group of mediocre musicians and play music that no one with any kind of taste would ever pay two cents to listen to, which just goes to show you, that yeah, Grateful Dead sold a lot of concert tickets in their career, but that doesn't mean that they didn't suck for their entire career. Phish isn't worthy of an educated opinion...
Now, tell me something bullshit boy... are you teelling me to do something you wouldn't do? What if I told you that Yanni or Engelbert Humperdink or John Tesh... all sold out their concerts, which they do, by the way... and let's say they toured by themselves, which they also do, by the way... and now, I'm gonna say that all three are the greatest living musicians of our time and you should go out and buy all thir albums and listen to them before saying otherwise. Bullshit. Knowing you, you'd just say something silly like 'I don't badmouth them", but face it... they suck... and so does Phish... and me sitting around wasting my time listening to all the shitty Phish music in the world isn't going to change my mind about them being a suck-ass group...
The world is full of idiots who like to go to concerts and don't care what's being played. Phish concerts are about atmosphere. People go to get high and groove out with their hacky-sack friends. It's a social thing. Nobody gives a shit what music is playing. Theband may as well be elevator muzak/background noise. You show me someone who knows the title or lyrics to any one Phish song, and I'll show you someone with bad taste in music...
Fact is, I don't have to know shit about them to know everything there is to know about them. Sprinkle that on your cornflakes, punk...

So, once you cease to suck as a musician you are then able to make alot of money? Or, in reverse, if you make alot of money as a musician you don't suck?

Actually, Brock's right about this one. I had the unfortunate experience of Phish being inflicted on me at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (it was '95 or 97') and, while I do live in Eugene, OR, which is world-renowned for its neo-hippie population- so I've heard stuff by Phish hundreds of times, this was much more than I could take.
The Ray-Ban stage, the largest at the event (somewhere around 3,000-5,000), was, in the space of about 20 minutes completely overwhelmed with the kind of patchy-pant wearing, starving dog toting, B.O and Patchoulii smellin', the rich parents on the east coast pay you handsomely to stay the fuck away from the family, fake hippies. They just wanted to hack, smoke, and as I call their particular brand of music-induced convulsion "hippie-spinning". No problem, right?
So for about two hours the world has slowed down considerably...the hypnotic droning, the muddled vocals, not being able to tell if they were playing a selection or the lost b-side(s) to 'in-a-gadda-da-vida'.
The worst part of the whole deal wasn't the music, though. It was the fans. They drove who knows how long and far to see Phish for 15 bucks then, just as quickly as they came, they vanished. I can't bring myself to believe that any fan of music would fail to recognize that that 15 bucks is good ALL DAY; you could have caught 8 or 10 shows....but nooooooo. Phish Phans are too good for other music. Or is it that other music is too good for Phish Phans?

Everything I have said in this thread pertains only to Phish. Phish is a singular experience. Musicians in Phish are like no other musicians. My remarks about money and musicans only pertain to Phish musicians. Every band is different. I have a theory on every band in history and it's all extremely complicated and intellectual and really, it's far too much for any human being other than myself to fathom, therefore I can't explain it to you. God, I'm good...

in short phish sucks balls
I don't know Brock. I just think you can't formulate an opinion until you have a reason behind it.
Go rent their DVD, watch it, its a concert and interview and stuff. Watch it in its entirity. Then come back here and tell me that Phish sucks and I will completely respect your opinion.
Yet you have never heard a single second from a Phish song. So on what basis do you formulate your opinion that they are crap and untalented?
You have no basis. So until you get one, don't bother commenting any further.
I don't enjoy those jam bands, or when Phish just kind of jazz-out and play one endless meandering song after trippy song.
They have some cool catchy stuff. Bouncing 'round the room, Lizards, Esther, and I love the song/s about the Land of lizards and the helping friendly book, and Wilson. It's the stuff that, I guess was Trey's thesis in school. That's what I heard anyway. My brother has the DVD and some big giant PHISH companion book that lists all the songs and the concerts and history of the band. So I have the resources to learn about them. Apprently you can purchase every single concert because they record them all.
So if anyone wants to know anything about Phish and you don't feel like searching the internet for it, I may be able to help you.

I have already stated upon what basis I think Phish sucks in great length in my previous posts. If your line of discussion is limited to not reading what I write and only repeating the same thing over and over again i.e. "unless you listen to Phish in their entirety than you know nothing"... then it's pointless to discuss this with you. You are being one-sided. You are not listening. You are merely waiting for a chance to speak...
Let me ask you something. Do you need to eat shit before you know it's shit and can talk about it? I don't. Shit is shit whether I taste it or not. I don't need to eat shit or touch shit or even smell shit to know what shit is. This pertains especially to shitty music and shitty bands of shitty musicans who play shitty music like Phish. Therefore, I have basis... and I don't need to hear them to have this basis...
You can talk all day and all night about how I'll never know until I try it and I shouldn't talk about it until I've experienced it... but does that very logic stop you talking about death, afterlife, God, creation, existence, meaning of life, sexual deviation, etc...? No. Therefore, I am right and you are wrong. Simple enough?
Really, you don't have to respect my opinion for me to have an opinion. I certainly don't respect your opinion, but that doesn't stop you, now does it?
No one needs a reason to do or be or think anything in a world full of reasons...

basically i don't try to straddle the fence, but i do hate phish, much like you therefore i find it a must to dump on them whenever possible, and no i don't do this for the sake of my post count, but it does help to waste time, whether you hate me or not...i could care less, there are plenty of people here that for better or worse enjoy some of the things i have to say, meaningful or not
