PERFECT MOVIES THREAD
List movies you would define as "perfect". Bear in mind that this is all completely subjective. The one's I listed were:
The Godfather (sorry Mike)
The Matrix
No Country for Old Men
Collateral
Goodfellas
Buuut I'm retracting The Matrix. I keep forgetting they completely fucked it up by switching out the original "human brains as computer processors" idea for the ridiculous, completely nonsensical "people are batteries" one. Every time I watch that movie, I imagine they didn't make this giant mistake, and the rest of it is just pure... pure beauty.
Also, I'm adding:
Up in the Air
Princess Mononoke
Little Miss Sunshine
Si vis pacem, para bellum
We Need To Talk About Kevin
Gone With The Wind
Pulp Fiction
Persona
The Passion Of Anna
Atonement
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy
There Will Be Blood
Trainspotting
Drive
American Beauty
The Big Lebowski
I'll have to second No Country For Old Men
Inception
I don't believe in perfect films, only in sublime ones.

Children of Men
L.A. Confidential
Creepshow
Clockwork Orange
Speed Racer

Up
Pan's Labyrinth
I'll have to think about this.
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."
-LaJessica
Pulp Fiction
Back to the Future (someone challenge me on this, I dare ya!)
Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope
Some movies aren't perfect but are still fantastic.
Donnie Darko isn't perfect but it's still my favorite movie.
And Lib, why are you apologizing to me? You can love any movie you want. I'm all equal rights 'n shit.
Edit: Oh yeah. And
American Beauty and Shawshank Redemption.

Jurassic Park. My favourite film ever. And it's so perfect.
Most of my other choices have been repeated many times over! Yay! You guys!
The Silence of the Lambs. I rewatched it the other day and I was like wow, this is so much more awesome than I originally gave it credit for.
Mary Poppins and a lot of the above movies already mentioned.

While I do agree with Franc, one that's almost perfect is the sound of music
Man is the cruelest animal.
I love you.
Moulin Rouge? There must be a reason that I've watched it a 100 times.
I seriously have no clue, I don't think I find any movie to be perfect.
Yes, Moulin Rouge! That's the reason why I'm so hyped up for The Great Gatsby - same director.
I also know most of the lines by heart. And I have to add Girl, Interrupted.
The first time I watched Jeepers Creepers it was perfect.
that is because I had no idea what it was about, and thought it was just another stereotypical serial killer movie. So, that moment, in the road...
Psycho was pretty awesome.
Thelma and Louise
Rush (but I haven't seen it since I was a kid)
My favorite version of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, watched it over and over and over and over as a little tiny girl.
(part one)
The Neverending Story
Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles
A Christmas Story
All the ones I named in the other thread.
(trying to think of ones that have not been named yet.)
28 Days Later
old boy
reservoir dogs
indiana jones and the last crusade
.I'm beginning to believe that anything I do to extend my life is just going to be outweighed by the agony of living it.
The Matrix
There Will Be Blood (This is not my favorite movie, or even my second or third, but I walked away from it feeling as if I'd just witnessed something truly spectacular).
I don't really have any movies that I can think if right away as perfect, which is why I used ones already said. I mean, my favorite movie is The Notebook, but I don't know if I'd call it perfect. There are parts I would take out, or actors I would change, especially with regards to the old people, but it's still my favorite.
It took me awhile to see The Notebook. Everybody kept gushing over it and it made me go "ugh". Then I watched it and was like "OMG THE NOTEBOOK!!!!". n_n
I thought 500 Days of Summer was a perfect balance of comedy and drama.
I agree with a lot of those: American Beauty and Collateral (though I wouldn't have put it, seeing it on here made me think about it).
A few of mine:
Vertigo
Citizen Kane
Psycho
Friday the 13th (Alecia's Halloween made me think of this. But I think this movie is only perfect now because of the sequels. You never think it is who it is.)
I'm drawing a blank, but I know there are more...
I agree with Franc on this. However, there are films which I have 100% enjoyed, i.e.
Boogie Nights
Eyes Wide Shut
Adaptation
...My Girl
I really hate The Matrix.

Yes, almost, until they have not stupid shot of Jack frozen in the maze.
My Girl! I still cry if I watch that scene on YouTube.
The only one I want to add is The Shawshank Redemption. Also, I want to talk about Drive, and the one reason I think it's not a perfect movie, but don't know how without spoiling the ending.

Fight Club is a pretty good movie
Easy Rider is good
Mean Streets is great (along with almost every other Scorsese film)
I'll re-mention A Clockwork Orange (and any Kubrick movie), A New Hope, and The Godfather
Enter the Dragon
East of Eden
Citizen Kane
Seven Samurai
Beauty & the Beast (Disney)
The Lion King
Tarzan (Disney)
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (Disney)
Up
(that's all off the top of my head--but the list seems to morph from perfect to favorites)
This one is almost perfect :

I've never seen The Notebook, but I tried to read the book earlier this year and only made it a couple of chapters because it was just boring to me. I'm usually all for a good love story, so I don't know what the problem was.
Anthony Perkins in Psycho is perfect. I watched that movie when I was real young and I'll just never forget the ending. One of if not my favorite horror films.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Shawshank Redemption
Spirited Away
And maybe The Dark Knight.
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."

I had already seen the movie when I picked up the book in the bookstore, and it seemed waaayyy shorter than what you'd expect from a full length movie. I don't know, as much as people talk about reading books first, or books being better, I think some stories are just meant to be visualized.
I second: The Matrix, The Godfather, The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, and Halloween.
Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, and Snatch could all be on the list, but I've seen them so many times that I feel nothing when I watch them. They've become, like Samuel L Jackson, parodies of themselves.
Goodfellas is 78% perfect; the ending is long and boring.
I'd have to watch Mean Streets again.
Adding: Gangs of New York. Franc don't like it, neither did Mr. Brown, and their arguments are valid, but the movie is just so colourful, hilarious, and violent. It seems like a movie made specifically for me. There's so much well placed bloodshed, so many fights with so many weapons; we have a riot and a gang war and an army invasion all wrapped up into one elaborate scene, and the Butcher character is one of the most entertaining mother fuckers ever. I've seen GONY about twelve times and I could always watch it, it hasn't lost any of its impact.
The Hours is a perfect ghost story. It carries the same mood throughout, with ever increasing tension and an ending that keeps you guessing. SAW is maybe the only perfect horror movie that focuses on gore. 28 Days Later is the best zombie movie so far, but not perfect at all.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and the Princess Bride are both perfect adventure/comedies.
Unforgiven is a perfect western. The action sequences and dialogue are both better than in Tombstone; Tombstone would have been a gem, but it was made too much in the style of the 90s and it stinks like that. It has a lot of really corny camerawork. All it has that Unforgiven doesn't is Doc Holiday. Tombstone is still awesome, though.
Interview with the Vampire is the best vampire movie, very much perfect. American Psycho is definitely perfect, a soulless masterpiece. Beauty and the Beast is a perfect animated movie; Enter the Dragon is a perfect Bruce Lee movie.
Monty Python: The Search for the Holy Grail, might be the greatest thing anyone has ever created.
Fucking Reservoir Dogs, too. Rocknrolla is almost perfect... The Devil's Advocate, if not for the last ten seconds of the movie being so stale; it ends like an episode of Tales from the Crypt.
Silence of the Lambs is perfect. I really liked Hannibal Rising, too; more to my preference than actually great, so definitely not perfect--but seeing Hannibal with his usual psychotic calm, but combined with the recklessness of youth makes for an interesting character, and when he blocks the slap with his fork I cream my pants every time.
If there's a perfect superhero movie, it's Batman Begins. I haven't seen Inception or There Will Be Blood.
Oh yeah, Seven is perfect.
I forgot about Seven. How could I forget about Seven?
For one scene alone I think you would really enjoy There Will Be Blood...wait make that two.
It's such a minimal and slow moving plot but i'm enthralled every time i watch it.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that really liked Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Also, I forgot about Unforgiven.
I had a problem with Seven's casting. I really like Kevin Spacey, but I don't think that was his role. And I'm sorry, but I didn't like Brad Pitt either. He still moved and emoted too much like a model. Like, by his character's lines and his delivery, I could tell he didn't have the experience to be able to really absorb that kind of character yet. He's gotten better, though.
Si vis pacem, para bellum

The characters just seemed bland and cliche and I couldn't carry one reading it.
Maybe I will watch the movie someday.
Nicholas sparks has a contract where all his books are going to be films, so as he's writing them he must be thinking about how it will work as a movie. I don't think it was as such when he wrote The Notebook but I thought it was interesting and I'd mention it. We were listening to him being interviewed on the radio, I'd never heard of anything like that before with an author, he must be pretty stinking rich!!
A lot of you are quite liberal with the word perfect.
The girl has been trying to get me to watch that. She majors in French, so she likes to watch French movies because real people talking and having conversations is the best practice. Anyway, she says this movie is right up my alley.
Wow Dan, great list. I can't believe I forgot about Seven too.
I didn't know the Hours was a ghost movie. I'm gonna have to add that to my netflix queue and check it out.
This movie is always among my top 3. I love it and I rewatch it all the time. And Anthony Perkins is perfect in it.
And after reading about The Hours, I see it's not a ghost story...
The first time I watched this movie, I thought it was awful. Years later, I read the book and liked it. I re-watched the movie, then, loved it.
Because of that, I think Bram Stoker's Dracula from the 90's is my favorite vampire movie. Gary Oldman's awesome.
I liked this one too. Daniel Day-Lewis won me over in Gangs of New York--he is awesome. Although I liked this one, it dragged a little in the middle. I may have to re-watch it.
I thought he was perfect for the role. I thought he was the perfect mixture of dark and intelligent. And, since he looks like everyman, he had the perfect look for the role.
I totally disagree here. I miss him doing roles like this. 12 Monkeys, True Romance, Seven, Snatch, Legends of the Fall, and Fight Club are, in my opinion, his top performances. When he was cast as eye candy, like in A River Runs Through It, he was still good. But the Oceans sequels and Mr. and Mrs. Smith makes me disagree with 'He's gotten better.' Although, I liked him in Burn After Reading.
(sorry for the edit)
Naaawww. Brad Pitt was only good in certain roles. His best performance was in Fight Club. He was terrific in the Ocean's movies, considering those are just about looking cool and stylish (as a model, that's what he's good at). But an angry cop? Nah. And c'mon, he's definitely gotten better. He did a pretty good job in Inglourious Basterds, The Tree of Life, and The Assassination of Jesse James.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
I mean, the way he was acting in Seven, I just didn't believe that he would make that bending over joke. I didn't believe his pain at the end. I didn't believe he would be so stubborn as to ignore the idea that the killer is probably a smart guy. His movements were too nonchalant, his voice was too relaxed, and his facial expressions looked forced. i.e. like a model. I get it, he was a little new to acting. He did a decent job, but... it was bad enough to keep the movie from perfection.

I completely agree with you, except I didn't enjoy Burn After Reading.
I find the Brad Pitt-bashing offensive!
Didn't see Tree of Life.
I liked Inglourious Basterds. I didn't think that he did a bad job but I didn't think his performance was noteworthy. Christoph Waltz, on-the-other-hand, was awesome and made the movie.
I liked the Assassination of Jesse James. Again, I think he did fine but thought that (surprisingly) Casey Affleck stole the show.
I guess this comes down to personal preference. For instance, back when Inception came out, I was flamed for saying that Leonardo DiCaprio hasn't given a good (and not even believable) performance since What's Eating Gilbert Grape. That doesn't mean that I dislike The Departed (which is awesome), Gangs of New York, Inception, The Aviator... I just think that these movies are great despite him. And I'm cringing at the thought of him as Jay Gatsby (no one will ever top Robert Redford).
I've just been posting movies I like a lot. On that note, adding:
Natural Born Killers
Revenge of the Nerds

Gone With the Wind
True Grit
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
Halloween (the original)
The Color Purple
