Music That You Grew Up With
i'm talking about what you listened to before you made the conscious decision of mucial choice, the stuff your parents and older sibs played for you when you were still young and impressionable.
I was raised on classical music like bach and beethoven, a lot of oldies like 50s-early 70s, and a fair amount of classic rock. i never listened to those for-kids groups like Raffi, or sesame street compilation albums.
some bands/artists that pop out at me from my childhood:
Bach
Beethoven
Chopin
Handel
Beatles
Elvis
Mamas and Papas
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Led Zeppelin
Moody Blues
anyone else care to share?
i remember lots of eagles and chicago
Basically, whatever my mom listened to is what we kids listened to: Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks. Also, my mom was completely infatuated with the Scarface soundtrack(and film too, she took us kids to see it when I was 5!!!!!), so to this day I think I know ever note of that album. A neighbor girl who would babysit me and my sis would always watch MTV with us, and that's how I remember falling for early eighties pop shit like Duran Duran and The Police. I still love that stuff.
stevie nicks here too
CCR -> SUzy Q
I listened to everything my brother listened to:
Black Sabbath
Soundgarden
Guns'n'Roses
Anthrax
Marillion
etc.
my mom loved to listen to classic rock like heart, kansas, joe walsh, lynyrd skynyrd (sp?) etc. , plus the carpenters, fleetwood mac, and other similar things, she gave me this great classic rock tape when i was little and i wish i still had it , had some some awesome songs on it
My parents were into the rock and roll of their generation, and they were both huge hippies. So lots of stuff like the Kingston Louis Trio, Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell. A lot of quality classical music too, and some less quality contempo jazz on my father's part (think Kenny G).
There is hope, but not for us.
Typically, anything that's now considered classic rock is what my dad had playing as a youngster. I was named after an Elton John song, thanks to my mom, so that was a huge one for me. Van Morrison is probably the guy that I listened to all the time. Sometime around my 8th birthday, my Uncle had bought me a Van Morrison and Judas Priest tape.. and, I'd listen to them at night on my lil' Casey the Robot or Teddy Ruxbin tape player.
Because of all this though, the radio station I listen to the most is the classic rock one.

boys II men wasn't around when i was a child.
MJ just wasn't my parents style, and i'm pretty thankful of that.

When I was around 10 years old, my dad sat me down at the stereo, gave me the headphones and said "listen to this". He put on "Brain Damage" from Dark Side of the Moon. I was probably a bit too young to appreciate Roger Waters singing about "lunatics in the hall", but by the time I hit Junior High a few years later, Pink Floyd was all I would ever listen to.
i can remember my dad always playing the stones ,zepplin, hendrix, beatles, elvis.
my mom was more into the carpenters, elton john & . . . abba!
abba was more like a childhood tumor that thankfully got removed.
I was in 5th grade and I got Beck Odelay, White album and Neil Young Harvest for my birthday from my dad. That was the first music I ever listened to. They remain on my top 5 list today.

Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer was my favorite song in 2nd grade.

I'm always telling my mom that she scarred me for life with all of that John Denver when I was young. Luckily it was counterbalanced by a lot of Beatles and George Harrison solo records.
Hey MTR, you're back! Where you been at?
There is hope, but not for us.
to be honest, I don't know where I've been. Not here, I guess. Don't ask questions, just bask in my glory.

CCR was a big one for me, too, and I still love 'em. A lot of other classic rock was in the mix, too (Led, Zappa, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, etc.), as well as Elvis.
