We have a movie and tv talk thread, so time for a general thread about music!

None of this "what is your favorite song, band, album", etc.

What is keeping you busy these days when it comes to music?

I listened to the new Coheed and Cambria album (The Afterman: Ascension), and was pretty disappointed. I read a review that said it was their best album since their "early days", but I definitely don't agree with that. It wasn't exciting, it wasn't very cool, the whole feel of it was just eh.

Other than that, I've been pretty bummed out about music, because I can't seem to find any new music (or music I just didn't know about) that I LOVE. This used to happen quite regularly, but now I've either gotten so picky, or I just don't know where to look anymore.

And no, websites like LastFM, Spotify etc. don't help. I use Sputnikmusic now and then to read reviews and look at specific charts, that's a pretty good site.

I've been listening to two soundtracks lately - Moonrise Kingdom and 2046. 2046's music is by Shigeru Umebayashi, who also made the score for A Single Man.

I've been listening to a lot of Florence and the Machine recently.

This... is a good idea. MTV's out the window, and the radio won't stop playing the same five songs. I'm just not connected to the scene anymore.

I'm sort of up to date about popular new music in The Netherlands, because I enjoy listening to my favorite Dutch radio station, but other than that, I have no clue anymore either.

Sarah, I enjoy listening to Florence and the Machine as well.

Oh, I'm currently really enjoying 8th Wonder, which is a song by Gossip. It's funky and energetic.

I want to discover another band like Underoath. Somewhat heavy, loud, fast, screamy, yesh. The bands that are recommended for people that listen to Underoath are generally not really what I'm looking for though.

Lately I'm digging on the new Grizzly Bear album, especially since the weather got colder. Also liking the new Tame Impala record - fuzzy psychedelic guitars yes plz

I don't really listen to 'new' music - mostly because I find there's little to get excited about and I hate UK radio. If that makes me sound like a snob, I don't care, I'm happy. I usually find bands through YouTube or trusted friend's recommendations.

I like listening to these guys at work (they are still around too):

Was just listening to some Grizzly Bear on Pandora, today. Had the Pandora station set on Grimes. Plays great stuff like The Xx and The Knives. Smitten with Oblivion by Grimes.
But M83's Midnight City is still the soundtrack to my life right now.
Everyone here seems to have decent taste, albeit different, in music. Thanks for that Oh See's link, too.

I've been listening to Marilyn Manson's CDs in order. I guess I've only been able to make it through about 1.5 a day because people keep calling me! Just because I'm at work doesn't mean I want to work.

My sister listens to something which I've heard is pretty bad - One Direction. I haven't been masochistic enough to look up any of their songs, I stumbled across some creepy Honey Boo Boo video today and that was my dose of dead neurons for the week.

Nice. I'm going to see the Manson/Rob Zombie tour in a couple of weeks.
The latest album is actually alright compared to the one before that, but he'll never top the earlier albums. (ACSS, Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood)

I've really liked every album he's put out. I think that he's way misunderstood. If you look passed the "dark" stuff, his message is pretty good.

Those 3 albums you mentioned are actually a trilogy. They tell a story - kind of like Ziggy Stardust. But you have to listen to them in the opposite order as he released them. Look them up on wikipedia. The story is pretty cool/weird.

The Manson/Zombie concert is tonight. I wish I could have gone!

I like him a lot too, that High End of Low album was just a little too self-pitying for my liking.
There's a lot of cool stuff about his symbolism and things on that nachtkabarett.com site too. My husband (something of a manson-ophile, though not as much as he used to be in the early 2000s) actually has the Mechanical Animals vinyl, double disc with the alpha and omega concept like it was originally intended. one of the vinyls is blue and i think the other is white. it's kind of awesome.

Long Hard Road Out of Hell?

I like the bit where he and Billy Corgan got fucked up together and decided they were going to write fruity music.

I've been listening to some more current pop type music. I end up listening to it in the car because the pop station is the only one that stays in tune.

Here are some I got for my ipod:

This one is super poppy, but it's so catchy!

This is kinda nice.

Flight of the Conchords team up with other NZ musicians for a charity thing.

The new No Doubt song. I like it. Catchy and fun.

I'm looking at festival line-ups now (currently from the Roskilde festival, which is held in Denmark) and picking random band names to listen to, in hopes of finding something I might like.

That's sweet about the vinyl. I'll have to check out that site too. Is it safe for work?

In the sense that it doesn't have a whole lot of images, yeah.. but there's a lot of discussion of occult and other weird stuff on there, (as you would expect) so it depends where you work, really

ok, so the show was pretty decent, I had fun.
He's definitely a little on the heavy side now and his voice isn't what it used to be. they were clever about covering it up by having a little 40-60 second break between every song to bring in a different piece of scenery and letting him change his outfit and have a breather. The staging was awesome, like i said there was basically a different piece of scenery for every song, and the set list was a few songs off the new album and a kind of greatest hits of older stuff and bringing back old set pieces, like the DRUGS sign, the political type podium and the MObscene signs. not to mention there was not one, but THREE glitter/paper/snow explosion things, which was pretty fun!

The biggest thing for me is that the band isn't what it used to be. Twiggy was there, and he's good of course, but the bassist and drummer just weren't particularly dynamic. This was particularly noticeable when Rob Zombie started, his band was a lot fuller sounding and generally more engaging. And I'm not even particularly a huge Rob Zombie fan. But that guy is around the same age as Manson and has about 3 times the energy. He was running and jumping around non stop.. they had some cool video screens with old horror movie clips and things, it was quite fun. John5 and Ginger Fish on guitar and drums were awesome.. Ginger played a drum solo which was pretty epic.

Overall I definitely had a good night, if you get a chance to check out the tour you'd probably have a good time.

They don't appear to be coming anywhere near the west coast Sad

I saw Manson in Salem in January of '97. I can't for the life of me remember who opened for them at the moment. James is saying it was Coal Chamber, who we missed, but I don't think it was because I remember missing Coal Chamber opening for Anthrax opening for Pantera later that same year. I can't see how I could have spent a year missing Coal Chamber over and over for all these other bands at the same venue.

Hell yeah google.

It was L7 that opened for them who we did miss, but saw later that year at a tiny venue in Eugene, which happened to be one of the best times I ever had at any concert or show in my life.

Well Rob Zombie is pretty fit, so I can see him being able to run around and be more energetic.

Still though, it would have been an awesome concert to go to, just to say I'd gone.

Yeah he is definitely in pretty good shape... Rob Zombie is so tiny! I think I could have got my hands around his waist he's so skinny.

I've only seen Manson one other time, and that was during the Mechanical Animals tour, so I mean.. he's never going to top that. My husband and I are both big fans and we'd never got to see him together, so that was partly why we wanted to go too.

Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath were just as bad as Manson ever was. I don't understand why the media has taken Manson to the next level. Then again, back in the day, they probably treated Sabbath and Cooper the same way.

Reminds me, I love pulling out the old Alice Cooper vinyls.

My one problem with going to shows these days is that my feet start to hurt about half way through,no matter how comfortable the shoes are that I'm wearing. Am I getting old? This never used to happen to me, but also I used to drink more, so perhaps I just didn't notice

Nah, I get that too. Sometimes it's also nice to be in the seating section because some venues, especially old theatres, have really crap standing areas where your view is largely obscured because everyone is standing on one level.

PS: I got Scott Walker's "Scott" from the library. Are all his albums this corny?

At L7, I remember in between each song the band members took turns saying things like "I'm easy and I'm proud" just to see how loudly stupid the crowd would respond.

I'm seeing Band of Horses the day after tomorrow. I've never seen them live before. It was supposed to be this festival thing with Willie Nelson and some other people performing on a train but it didn't work out and was cancelled and i was refunded the $60 per ticket. Then Band of Horses rescheduled (which they never do) and tickets were less than half the price they were and now it'll just be them, no opening act or anything. It'll be a good show.
