Movie talk
Did I call it Sunrise?
That was a typo.
If nothing else, this forum is an excellent place to find out which movies I should watch. That movie kicked ass.
I am so glad you liked this movie, it is definitely in my top ten.
"...you want to be truly unselfish? Love someone or die for someone. Those are the only good deeds you can perform without any hope of personal gain."
The first 2/3 were great. The last 1/3 was terrible. Verdict: Meh.
Now THAT I can understand.
I wouldn't say the last 1/3 was terrible, it was just a jump to, like, a different movie than what we had been watching for the first 2/3rds. Which I guess is kind of a terrible thing to do, but anyways...
I'm thinking about watching this Jennifer's Body tonight. Is there boobs in it or am I just wasting my time as per usual?
i saw 9 and i really liked it. i'll have to watch it again because it went right over my head and i know there's a bunch of metaphors and allegories i missed. also, 'taken' was badass. i like how he'd clear out entire houses full of people.
I swear they're the same person. Never in my life, not even once, have i been able to tell which one is which. And they've never done a movie together either, so i know they're the same person and the world only pretends they're different to drive me crazy.
Ralph fiennes is just the Quiz Show guy, Liam Neesen is fucking Darkman! They don't even remotely look alike.
just saw mr fox. Boy, was that great. Clever, brilliantly shot/animated, perfect soundtrack, some hilarious cameos, and overall quirky brilliance. Anyone seen up in the air yet?

Anyone heard anything about CasaNegra? It's a Moroccan film and I just heard about it on BBC World News. Apparently the North African movie industry is trying to get a foothold, and this movie is getting international attention, and all this other stuff. It looks like it could be interesting.
Woah, Hunger is on tonight on TV. I'm definitely watching that.
How was this? It kinda looks like Street Trash,
mike, I saw hunger at a museum/arts center and the director steve mcqueen spoke. It's such an amazing film.

Yeah I've heard, I'm looking forward to it. Is the director making any more films? I think I heard that he's actually an installation artist.
I saw A Tale of Two Sisters, which was pretty good. I saw Marley & Me which was cute, funny, and sad. I saw A Very Long Engagement which was fucking awesome.
He's made a few films and will continue doing such, i imagine. I've not seen any of them, but they seem to be mostly parts of art exhibits. He's a sculptor and photographer as well.
Hunger is a wonderful movie, which i just saw a few weeks ago. It took me a few minutes to reacclimate to the irish accent, but that conversation Bobby Sands has with the priest is brilliantly done. Funny, thoughtful, and moving. Such a great film.
Also, i remember seeing the adverts for this last fall and i kept thinking Steve McQueen the dead Hollywooder was the director. It struck me as very strange.
I've watched a lot of movies recently, but can't recall what all they were. Ponyo, i quite liked, same with The Battle of Algiers, but i can't remember what else i've been watching. Oh, Thirst, loved that.
I have seen 34 movies in the theaters this year alone. After Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and possibly Up in the Air I will write a lengthy year in review. Besides Star Trek which I saw three times, I don't think any of these were duplicates. I have the ticket stubs to prove it.

I'm not sure if he has any more films mike, but hunger sure was great. I'm pretty sure you are right about the artist thing, since I saw some of his (Mcqueen's) works at the bienali(spelling?) event in Venice italy. It was really messed up but still awesome

How was this? It kinda looks like Street Trash,
It was glorious in it's terribleness. You get the feeling whoever wrote it thought they really had something with using a horror movie to rail against mindless consumerism but somewhere between the script and filming it thins went totally (80's slang!!) wrong.
I'm going to start calling you "Meadowlark Lemon!"
(make some research)

The Battle of Algiers kicks ass. It's so relevent, even today, and I thought it was awesome seeing a war through the terrorists eyes as well.
The more I see of this the worse it looks:
Requiem for a Dream was interesting. Not as good as it has been played up to be, but that's probably because of how hyped up it's been. It was still good, but I was a bit disappointed. The second half of the movie was much better in my opinion. I'll either watch 3-Iron or Okuribito later.
It's 10 years late, but this is the greatest, most thoughtfully written essay on exactly why The Star Wars prequels were horrible. It's the longest "It Sucked!" ever. The entire thing is like an hour long, but just the first video sums up everything fantastically, especially the last half where he just focuses on the characters.
That was great. I might watch the others just cause we're both cracking up over here.

I just got done watching all 7 of them. All of them are just as well-written and funny.
Excellent !

I watched Exterminating Angel last night, and although there was a lot of stuff I found great about it, and I thought for a moment that it was going to turn into a great movie, I ended up only being meh about it.
I just went and rented Godard's "Histoire(s) Du Cinema", sounds interesting. Anyone seen it?
I stay as far away from Godard as possible.

I saw Avatar, Up in the Air, and Blind Side. Up in the Air was the best of those. Funny, witty, charming, and emotional. It was like thank you for smoking but with some sad parts too. Seeing sherlock holmes tonite

I'm going to see Avatar in IMAX in a few days, I think. It'll be my first IMAX experience.
Sherlock Holmes was awesome. But it was midnight, and I was buzzing, so that might not be a reliable review. Although I do know it was a completely different take from the original stories. Don't expect to actually see THE Sherlock Holmes.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Does anyone else see that as a MAJOR problem with the film?
I mean, I've never even read any Sherlock Holmes and every time I see those commercials I reflexively make that DeNiro face where it looks like you smelled something bad.
See, I thought the take was closer to Sherlock than the stuffy, snobby proper gent they've displayed in the past. And it was nice to see watson kicking some ass as well. The problem I had was the film itself. The mystery just didn't do it for me. I don't think they layered in the clues properly. The story didn't hook me. When they revealed all at the end, I though...hm. How in the hell was I supposed to pick up on THAT during the film? And the skull-smashingly obvious "heeeere comes the sequel" thing could probably have been set up better. And I hated th emusic, and every fight after the first couple.
But other than that...
But other than that...
When i read Holmes, I don't think of him as stuffy, but a lot more gentlemanly than the film's version. As for the actual mystery, yeah, I agree. There was no way anyone could've figured all that out on their own. But I did love the characters and tone of the story, throughout. The action sequences were pretty great, too. I'd make a bad fight club joke, but eh.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
I don't want to see Sherlock Holmes because I hate to think the The Sherlock Holmes Museum in London will profit. I worked there during the summer of 2008 and the boss was a bully, and the manager, who he was fucking (despite being about 30 years his junior) was a fat, mean Russian bitch.
I had to dress up as a Victorian maid everyday:

AAAAANYWAY - I don't really care about the movie and will watch it online if I hear good things.
Looking forward to The Lovely Bones (although they disappointedly got rid of a lot of the scary imagery - severed feet etc), and will probably go see Nowhere Boy (the early John Lennon biopic) at some point.
Nate, your vid that bashed Star Wars was hilarious, but I disagree with like everything he says. First, the prequel Star Wars were better than the originals (yeah, I said it). Second, his protagonist rant is completely wrong. Star Wars shifts the focus around from its many characters but the only solid protagonists are R2D2 and C3P0. Other than Obi-wan and Anikan, they are the only characters who are present in each film. Not to mention that Luke in episode IV, like Anikan in episode I, isn't revealed until after the droids bumble into him. I once wrote a paper about this for a art appreciation class. I'll stop now before I completely geek out.
"[B]eing good is a fearful occupation; men strain at it and sometimes break in two." - Ray Bradbury
The second half of your argument it lost because of the ridiculous statement that the prequels were better than the originals.
district 9 special edition dvd here I come! Also, just preordered Moon. Can't wait!

District 9 was awful.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
you're awful.
I saw Nine last night and enjoyed it. I don't think it was amazing, but it was nice to see something actually different. I saw Chicago when I was young and hated it, but it grew on me later. I'm a big Daniel Day Lewis fan, which is mainly the reason I saw Nine. Hard to believe its the same person as Bill the Butcher.

I've been told to watch district nine. People said it was way better than the commercials, which looked to me like a video-game based movie made BEFORE the video game came out.
But I heard there was actually a good plot. Worth renting or buying?
| adj | facebook | an american atheist| warmed and bound |
i would buy it but i'm guessing it has an acquired taste because some people hate it. i thought it was original and interesting how they mixed african ghetto crime stuff with alien stuff. it was funny too.
Pull the tapeworm out of your ass, Hey!

District 9 was one of my favorite movies of last year. Great plot, and the fact that they produced something so epic on so small a budget that has amazing effects AND a good story gives me hope for the future of movies.
I thought District 9 was only OK, it started with this original premise but then descended into old hat, and the buddy shit between the prawn and the guy who is turning into a prawn was so cheesy! And how the prawns all had these big cow eyes lookin' all sad to tug my heart strings, I didn't need that.
It reminded me of that song from Spitting Image or whatever it was, "I've never met a nice south African" true!!
What was it with all the "Nine" movies this year anyways? There was that tim burton stuffed doll one too! Was it just because of the year? We didn't have a shitload of "Eights" last year.

No matter how freash it is, still didn't help you remember it's titled "Sunshine" and not Sunrise.
