Movie talk
I really did like Brave. I bought the 3D Blu-ray. I don't have a 3D TV, but it's eventually gonna catch on to the point where it's unheard of to not own one, so at least I won't have to rebuy it. Same for The Lion King.

I've never seen a 3D TV in a living room. I don't believe they exist.
Thank you!
It really is a great film. It's science fiction. It's adventure. It's romance. It's coming of age. If you include the third movie, it's western.
In my opinion, you're cool.
We have one. We havn't used the 3d bit of it for over a year.
I wanna see Seeking a Friend for the End of the World today.
I liked Brave. It was cute, quite beautiful and funny.
My grandfather has one, it's pretty amazing quality. It's like a 56 inch screen too. So there.
Are you sure it's not just a 56 inch hole in his wall and you guys were just watching whatever's beyond it?
I liked Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World.
That movie was the topic of the night of the non-event. Specifically, the idea of heroine being my go-to activity for the end, along with some other stuff rockstars do.

True but this is Pixar here. they've never made a bad movie.
Cars.
I like Cars (but I also liked Doc Hollywood).
I've never seen Cars.
The ride is pretty awesome though.
Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.
Cars 2 then. People who like Cars don't even like Cars 2.
I watched The Evil Dead for the first time on Friday night and that's some gnarly shit. I liked it.
Wait til you see the second one. That's usually the favorite. I personally love the third.
My friend raves about the second one. I can't wait.
Currently watching Fire Walk With Me and I hope it isn't as crap as everyone says because Twin Peaks is my favorite.
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

I saw Beyond The Hills today. It totally deserves being shortlisted for the Oscars. I still remember the story that inspired the book which inspired the movie. I was 15 when it happened, and I was so shocked that something like this could still happen.
Something like this being a mentally ill person who was exorcised and died on a makeshift cross at a monastery in Moldova.
Just watched Mr. Nobody. Fantastic movie.
Django kicked ass.
Watching 'Family Man' with Nicolas Cage and Tea Leone. Reminds me of what my husband and I are going through. Except he did go away and go for the job.
I watched Cloud Atlas. It was pretty messy, but there were definitely things I liked about it. Overall though, the stories fell somewhat flat. I understand they can't put every aspect of the book in the movie, but yeah, it was bothering me a bit. Also, the make-up was horrible at times, I'd rather they had chosen different actors.
Is that the one about the Michael Jackson impersonator? I can't ever find that one.
Nooo, definitely not about that, haha.
I saw Black Butterflies today, about South African poet Ingrid Jonker. Yet another fantastic recommendation.
Last week I watched Hit So Hard - a documentary about Patty Schemel (Hole's ex-drummer). It was okay; although it had some interesting footage of Hole and Kurt Cobain, it was cut boringly and dragged in parts.
Watched Life of Pi, I thought it was okay but don't totally understand what all the fuss is about.
In regard to Les Misérables; beautiful people pretending to be miserable. No thank you. I also offended someone when I called a musical. Apparently it's an opera and there's a difference.
Saw this elsewhere online and thought it was kind of funny.

I agree with all of this, including the criticism. Yeah, it really doesn't make sense to call it a musical, now that you bring it up.
Also, waaaayyyy too many close-up shots. It was annoying as hell. But that's probably because I had to sit in the dreaded front seats.

I just went to see Les Mis, which was absolutely fantastic. It put me in the mood to watch Sweeney Todd, which I've only seen once and am now watching on Amazon instant video.

Stupid Crazy Love. One of my favorites. I laughed so hard during certain parts, was so moved at others.
And the babby goose.
I didn't understand that nickname for the longest time, and then one day it just hit me, and in that moment, I felt truly stupid.

Hahaha, I know exactly how you feel. Stuff like that happens to me from time to time.
You're right, actors should always portray only rich, happy people who live in California. And are actors.
I'm personally not offended by your ignorance but, yeah, there is a difference.

I think he meant that their portrayal wasn't convincing (I don't blame their acting, but rather... the fact that it was an opera shot entirely in close-ups, almost to the point where you forget the setting). I was very aware I was watching Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, etc. The only scenes I really enjoyed were the ones with Sacha Baron Cohen+Helena Bonham Carter and Eddie Redmayne with his gang of revolutionaries. They were, like, doing stuff during their performance which kept me in the story, rather than just repeating what was obvious through song while making sad faces.

I need to watch some musicals one of these days.
I loved all of it, but I agree what Cohen and Carter stole the show.

Can someone (Tuffy?) explain why Les Miserables is an opera and not a musical? I thought it was a musical.
Watched Gangs of New York tonight, for the first time since seeing it in the theaters. Forgot what a mostly terrible film it is.
I am taking a stab in the dark here, but maybe the difference between a musical and an opera is that a musical has a higher amount of plain acting that now and then breaks into sporadic choreographed song, whereas an opera the song/dance(?) is the heart of the program?
I suppose that makes sense. There are a hell of a lot of songs in the production. I'm trying to make some research but everything I'm reading is referring to it as a musical, but I suppose that could just be a populist thing.
Operas: you sing every bit (or nearly every bit) of dialogue.
Musicals: it's a play....but they occasionally break into song.
Musicals: it's a play....but they occasionally break into song.
This seems to be the general consensus, but (as with anything) there are exceptions. Carmen has quite a bit of dialogue, and Cats has no dialogue. The definitions I'm reading all seem to be defined by historical snobbery rather than anything concrete.
Ah, finally something useful: the libretto for an opera is almost always written in verse (although not true for some more modern operas), and the libretto for a musical is written in prose, with the exception of the song lyrics.
Cats is an opera.
The Carmen I saw was an opera; it had no dialogue whatsoever.
Rule of thumb: Do they ever talk? If not - opera.
Operas are not necessarily "all dance"; sometimes That Guy just walks over there. But they can be. Cats is all singing all dancing.

I've seen Les Mis, the show/opera twice and loooooved it. Cried my eyes out. I'll probably see the movie on dvd if the bloke lets me.
I'm watching Salome's Last Dance. Haven't seen it since '89. Ken Russell is awesome. That is all.

Saw Les Mis today. It was wonderful, but suffers from having to be cut down so much. It should have been two movies and Russell Crowe shouldn't act anymore.
If you get the chance, go see it in the theatre. Even if you have to go by yourself, I almost want to go see it again and I will definitely buy it on blu ray.
