Movie talk
I rewatched The Dead Zone a couple of nights ago and it's dated, but in a good way. Still a great film. Great performances from Martin Sheen and Christopher Walken.
Early and mid, to late Cronenberg are great. I love THE FLY, VIDEODROME, THE DEAD ZONE, SHIVERS. I cannot believe you Alex. My faves are a toss up between THE FLY and VIDEODROME.
'eastern promises' is the only cronenberg movie i've seen an it was pretty great. i didn't even know he directed it. i thought he only did weirdo sci-fi stuff.
David Cronenberg is one of my favourite directors. (I also think he's hot but that's by the by). I love his early horror but also love the fact that his recent 'mainstream' movies are simply awesome. I can't wait to see what he's doing next. Videodrome is by far one of my favourites. I also watched The Fly fairly recently and I still thought it was ace.
Alex, we should watch one of his movies while I'm there! Maybe I should force you to re-watch Videodrome.
wait, i saw 'the fly'. that was a pretty good one.
loved eXistenZ, crash, and videodrome
i need to see spider
loved punch drunk love
i just rented trekkies, that's hilarious
also we started watching star trek tng from season 1, we're gunna watch all of them back to back, 2 or 3 episodes a night.
nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it.
Goofy title, but looks good anyways.

know what i saw last night and i never get to see it enough? 'wonder boys'. i love that movie so much. it makes me want to write and smoke cigarettes and be an old asshole. and the fucking black midget guy who steals michael douglas' car? hilarious. "stop calling me vernon!"
Damn, Wonder Boys is great. I really wanna watch it again right now, but alas I don't have it. Must rectify.
I watched Brick last night. I mostly dug it. I don't now if it was because I was tired or what, but I finally caught onto the dialogue, Especially Bendan's.

I love Brick. Love love love. I can't wait for The Brothers Bloom but I don't think it comes out here till later in the year which sucks.
I am going to see Brothers Bloom this weekend, I think...
Yeah I noticed Brother's Bloom was due out last year (according to IMDB). I'll give this Johnson guy another chance. I mean I liked Brick, so I'll definitely see Brother's Bloom. Also I have a crush on Nora Zehetner. I thought she looked familiar then realized she was in Heroes.

i tried to watch brick once but i kept falling asleep. also, i don't know if there are wal-marts in the uk but i know for sure i've seen wonder boys in the $5 movie bin.
I apparently am on a Joseph Gordon-Levitt kick because I watched Mysterious SKin last night. Twas creepy, but I dug it as much as one can dig a movie about pedophilia and gay hookers.

i saw a trailer for brothers bloom yesterday. it looks pretty interesting.
Brick's dialogue is taken straight from Dashiell Hammett. If you liked it, also check Miller's Crossing, the best film ever and the most underappreciated.

I read the book last year. It really was creepy. I have anothr book by him and it seems to be along the same lines. Not sure if I'm depressed enough to read it right now.
Cool. I'll keep that in mind.

Eh, I just watched all the Coen Brothers movies back to back recently, and Miller's Crossing was kind of middle of the pond for me.
Just saw Drag Me to Hell and it was great. What was said on the trailer is true. This really is Sam Rami's return to horror. It is good enough to compare to the Evil Dead series. It was very gory and gross and I was laughing the whole way through.
"The Warmth of Blood" 30 min Short Film

It's the deepest place

Maybe, but I think Barton Fink is their best movie.
Speaking of the Coen Brothers, I finally saw Burn After Reading recently and I wasn't overly impressed. I really liked the premise but for some reason it just didn't grab me.
Yes, they put more efforts in some of their films and set the autopilot on the others.

I feel like Lebowski/No Country are their two best.
I felt the exact same way. Sort of a let down really. With who was casted, I would've thought it'd been beter.

I just finished watching Revolutionary Road. I'm a sucker for movies like this. Thought it was beautiful. Also, I love DiCaprio and Winslet together.
yeah i have to watch the big lebowski at least once a month. i'm one of those guys.
Blood Simple was pretty awesome as well.
!
O Brother Where Art Thou!
The Hudsucker Proxy
Just finished The Great Buck Howard. It wasn't really that great, but it was still pretty good.
It just finished downloading, so tonight I will be watching Transylvania 6-5000!

I watched The Wrestler on DVD - I thought it was fantastic, a great example of how to show rather than tell in a movie.
Has there been talk about Antichrist yet? I'm not sure how to feel about it.
I watched Killshot http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443559 last night starring Mickey Rourke and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Overall it was a decent film.
I also had the (dis)pleasure of watching Twilight. I can see how this gets pre-tween girl's (and Jane, Taylor and Timberley)to feel funny down below, but really I didn't care for it. Not even when they played baseball.

You should all watch Max Manus. 8.4 on the IMDB website. A Norwegian movie about World War II. It's pretty damn great. <3
K.
WW2 deserves a movie thread to itself, given the variety of films related to the period and its many different subjects.

I'm sitting here watching The Dark Knight. First time i've seen it since going to the theatre last year.
Absolutely loving the fact that each time the Joker comes on screen or is about to show up, they start this really low musical hum in the background. It's just so subtly perfect in setting the mood. I don't think I realized it was there until just now.
I was watching one of the few special features on the Dark Knight disk about the music, and it was really interesting as they were talking about the one note hum. I can't wait for a more deserving DVD release.
Just watched Road to Perdition last night. That was a great flick. Very moving. Tom Hanks has been doing a lot of appearances lately, a lot of comedic skits (Colbert Report, SNL, Conan), I hope he's returning to comedy movies. Has he been in a comedy since "Big"?
So you've been broken and you've been hurt
Show me somebody who ain't
Yeah, I know I ain't nobody's bargain
But, hell, a little touchup and a little paint...
- Bruce Springsteen
he's been in some crappy romantic comedies but i think that's it. i loved 'road to perdition'. that one and 'catch me if you can' are the only tom hanks movies i liked. well 'saving private ryan' was a good one too.
He was in The Ladykillers, which was a comedy. I know there's a few more I'm not thinking of...
yeah ladykillers was pretty decent too.

Did anyone else find that movie too dark? As in, literally? It was so dark on screen I couldn't tell who was winning the fights!
Perhaps your screen ain't too good?

The only time I noticed anything like that was when he was in the nightclub/bar?(too dark to even tell) punching out those guys. If it wasn't for the sound effects you couldn't tell what the heck he was doing in that scene.
Everything else seemed okay though.
Come to think of it, I did get quite a major glasses prescription upgrade since watching it...
nobody said Raising Arizona.
also, i, too, thought Drag Me To Hell was fabulous. it was soooooo Sam Raimi - i forgot about this thread and spoiled it all for Blue Eyes up there in another thread, so all i'll say is it was pretty cool to see a girl play what would no doubt have been Bruce Campbell's role if they were still young - though i did miss Bruce and Ted, i had hoped for cameos. but The Classic was pretty much showcased, and that made up for it!!

Okay, I'll check it out. Most of my hate for Cronenberg is because of eXistenZ, The Brood, and Videodrome, which all fell between the category of bad and horribly bad. But I suppose because I loved Eastern Promises, Naked Lunch and A History of Violence so much, its pretty much a wash. I've seen Scanners, The Fly, and The Dead Zone but not nearly recently enough to remember whether they're any good or not.
