movie recommendations
so, lately ive found myself unable to read. i mean, i can physically read, i just cant stay focused. every book ive been picking up ive been unable to focus on it or remember what im reading. so, im taking a bit of a break from books. nice alliteration by me there.
anyway, ive decided to look into the cinema. any movies will do: any era, any director, any country of origin, any genre, blockbusters, so indie that no ones ever seen it, et cetera. throw some movies at me. just, uh, not shitty ones, preferrably.

Wow, your range is probably way too big for any of us to have the balls to suggest something out of fear that we'd make a suggestion you've seen and dislike. I'm thinking you could post a list of films you have interest in but are not sure of and we could tell you what's good. I'm too nervous to pluck out of thin air...
ah, man. i promise i wont make fun of anyone for whatever they recommend me. true, i see a lot of movies, like, seriously a lot. but i have a bad memory for movies that ive seen unless i hear the title again and im also kind of looking for some of those movies ive seen but cant remember. also, i have no pretense about movies as far as them not being worth my time. well, unless its something like spartan movie or epic movie or scary movie six or something like that.
i'll just let people know what kind of movies i tend to like. this is going to make me feel kind of stupid.
foreign movies: i watch a lot of them but forget their titles more readily than any other movies. probably the language barrier. i think some of the best films made are made over seas, whatever seas they may be. tend to see a lot of asian movies. akira kurosawa is more than god to me. the french make some good movies too. but any country of origin is fine.
horror: fell in love with the genre about a year ago. before then i had seen only a handful of horror movies and still havent seen that many. but i really dig them. unless its just torture porn. i havent seen HOSTEL but im 100% confident id hate it and itd make me vomit.
psychological drama: usually have a nice concept to hook you in at least.
children movies: pixar, disney, dreamworks, all good to me.
action movies: jackie chan and jet li always entertain me. unless theyre teamed with a rapper or someone lame.
some directors i really like: akira kurosawa, wong kar wai, wes anderson, noah baumbauch, francis ford coppola, christopher nolan, darren aronofsky, terry gilliam, scorcese[not always but enough to be on this list], david fincher, and other such people. i cant think of them on the spot like this.
i dont know, just throw them my way. its too hard for me to continue making that list. i'll say this though. not much of an anime fan. AKIRA and miyazaki movies are great but i tend to not care much about others. so, only recommend those if you think theyre of the caliber that everyone should see them because theyre that fucking good. i'll probably give it a look see. im really not very picky about what i watch. whether or not i'll like it is up in the air. but i'll probably give most movies a look.

Saw that somebody mentioned The Hoax, I really enjoyed that movie.
Only when you're interested in World War II: Zwartboek. It's a Dutch movie.

I finally replied to your message, so there are a few in there. I forgot that you mentioned animation and pixar. i'm a sucker for these too. have you ever watched any of David Firth's flash work? If not, go to www.fat-pie.com and try salad fingers and spoilsbury toast boy. He reminds me of Burton but more surreal and definetely darker. I've got a headful of suggestions but specifically, older films, other than what I already wrote you: The Reflecting Skin, Eyes Without a Face, Snow Angels,Candy,Svankmajer's Alice, Cat Soup, Live Flesh. The person that recommended The Fall and Oldboy is right on, those are both phenominal.

i love salad fingers. good call.
i don't see any recommendations yet for Battle Royale (Kinji Fukasaku) and The Audition (Takashi Miike). I've only seen The Audition (recommended) but heard good things about Battle Royale too.
edit: The Audition is mostly torture but one of the better ones I've seen.
edit 2: i have to add, if you haven't seen it yet, Run Lola Run.
Battle Royale is great! And even though Audition contains some intense torture scenes, I wouldn't consider it torture porn. It reminds me of Lynch, Miike is one of my favorite asian directors. His contribution to the Masters of Horror series, Imprint, was to say the least, extremely memorable. Though it was banned from tv, you can see it online or on dvd. Actually, most of the director's put out really interesting episodes. Lucky McKee, who was responsible for May, did the episode Sick Girl, another fun horror flick. And after watching Run,Lola,Run pick up The Princess and the Warrior.

thanks for the recommendations peeps. i'll look into the ones i havent sen. and ive heard a lot fo good things about AUDITION so i'll probably check it out. almost watched it last night actually. also, i feel like im the only person whos seen OLD BOY that didnt think it was that good. i dont know, didnt do much for me. thought SYMPATHY FOR MR REVENGE was better in almost every way.
oh, salad fingers creeps the shit out of me. like, seriously. i dont know. i just really dont like looking at it. and i just got the message, perfectblue. thanks for those, too.

I have enjoyed the movies: Kung-pow, Sheffy, Disturbia, Braveheart, Misery, The Hunt for Red October, The League of Extroadanary Gentlemen, A Knight's Tale, First Knight, The High-Lander series, Serenity, Firefly series, Star Ship Troopers, and Detroit: Rock city. Those were just a few i liked.

The Vanishing. I'm Not There (probably the best film of last five years, and somewhat of an homage to Rashoman). I dug Reflecting Skin. Curtis' Charm is an enjoyable, really obscure indie film about voodoo based on the writings of beat Jim Carroll. Goya's Ghosts is an excellent biopic in the sense that it tries to tell the story of a particular historical time/place with Goya as a focalizer. Ghost Dog is another interesting homage to samurai films, and it is a real genre bender. It's got aspects of westerns and mobster movies as well. It's funny, poignant, and deep. Short Cuts is a brilliant film by the recently deceased Robert Altman, based on the fiction of Raymond Carver, and it's got Tom Waits in it!
Love is the irresistable desire to be irresistably desired. Mark Twain.
all great recommendations, but personally, I find that when i don't have the mental stamina to go through a book, i definately don't have the energy to watch the classy stuff. If I were you I would head on over to the video store, buy some beers, invite some friends over, and watch my third or fourth favorite film of all time, the biggest, dumbest, funest film of all time:
Road House!!!!!
If you've seen that recently, or you're searching for something a little less testosterone heavy, try Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
what is this REFLECTING SKIN movie? i cant find any information on it whatsoever.
i kind of feel like just discussing a lot of these movies that ive seen but it seems to daunting to start it.
i'll say this though, i think gordon blackstone gave me the worst and best movie recommendation that ive ever seen. LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY MEN was awful in every way imaginable. at least i think it was. but, to redeem himself he also said DETROIT ROCK CITY which is just pure genius.
thanks everyone who contributed.

i heard they were actually really good. alan moore, isnt it? never read anything by him but i hear great things. also heard that he hates the movies that get made out of his shit. which isnt shocking considering what they are.

Yes Moore is "infamous" for trashing the movie adaptations of his work. I think it started with From Hell, that shit Johnny Depp movie that there was a thread about here not too long ago. Then League. V for Vendetta, too. Except I actually really liked V For Vendetta a lot.
As far as his Moore and his work, though, he's responsible for things such as Batman's The Killing Joke, The Watchmen, V For Vendetta, etc... great graphic novels.

RSheep, you liked V for Vendet, the film which has become the posterchild for the anarchist movement?!? I'm pleasantly surprised.
I personally found it a little...cliché's not the right word, but yeah, that sort of thing, almost was to be expected, nothing radically new, no concepts, etc, just cool ideas. But perhaps it planted the seed, I'm glad so many people were inspired by it.
'Mainstreamed' I think sums it up well. That was the author's main complaint as well I believe.

dont forget League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Constantine
have I reccomended Battle of the Algiers on this site? its a classic. also, Phantom of the Paradise is just fun times all around.
ive never read a graphic novel or a comic book before. but, if i get my hands on some alan moore i'll give it a read. who knows, maybe i'll start reading them.

I did. It isn't flawless, but I really loved it regardless. Children of Men even moreso. Punk rock is also my favorite music genre.
Hah, didn't think you'd be surprised by any of that though.

I don't actively read any of it, either. But if you want great graphic novels, I think Alan Moore is the way to go. I know I pissed some people off pretty well when I said I don't think Frank Miller really lives up to his hype these days, but for whatever reason I think Moore is one of the kings of the artform.
I'd also like to read some of the Sandman novels from Gaiman. If only I had the money. The series just sounds wicked.

I thought Children of Men was great as an intellegent action film. I really enjoyed it, and especially the unique steadycam shots, probably liked it overall more than V for Vendet. We watched it in 'modern classics' class and I thought it was a bit out of place there though.
i have one thing to say at this moment, CHILDREN OF MEN was a god awful movie. im sure i'll get shit for saying that, but that movie sucked and i was very disappointed.
oh, nice picks, bearchaser.

i guess i just thought every bit of it was stupid and boring. started with a great concept though. infertility, especially because we're actuall steadily becoming more infertile as a species. well, not we, but men. maybe just american men, i cant remember, but interesting nonetheless. what bothered me is that this concept went nowhere. every concept went nowhere. the entire world outside of the uk is fucked. why? no one knows. humans are fucked because we're all infertile. why? no one knows. and other than that it was just a lot of running about without direction. i dont remember most of the movie very well though. i just remember thinking it was stupid and not caring about it at all. cant remember why everyone was trying to kill that pregnant bitch but it was probably a stupid reason.
thats not to say i need to have explanations in a movie or story but some allusion to what happened would have added a lot. it felt like the movie was trying to force me to care instead of allowing me to care. it felt like a hundred movies ive seen and didnt much care for. an unlikely hero in an unlikey but exceptional circumstance coming through insurmountable odds to save humanity. true, there were a few great shots in there, but the only reason the movie is even tolerable to watch is because of clive owen and michael cain.
calling it a god awful film is a little bit of an overstatement. but for all the recognition it gets i expected more. its subpar at best.

No one was trying to kill her. They just wanted her to use her as a political force. She was the symbol of hope to everyone. I'm not going to rampantly defend it, but I did really love it. The shots and the acting were just part of it to me.

If you do pick up anything by Alan Moore I'd grab Watchmen, I haven't met a soul that hasn't liked that book, The Killing Joke is also fucking fantastic if you're a Batman fan.
As for Movies, Persepolis (Animated story about an Iranian girl caught in the Islamic Revolution) , Bringing Out the Dead (Nick Cage in one of the few good roles as an late night ambulence driver in New York slowly loosing his mind), and He was a Quiet Man (Christian Slater as a pathetic office worker who goes nuts). Also Slipstream was pretty interesting.
Slipstream was incredibly lame. I rented it because I have the hots for Sean Astin, but even that couldn't make me watch past 15 minutes into it. The Warriors is a great choice - love that movie. I liked Children of Men too. Persepolis is amazing. I highly recommend everyone seeing Heathers: probably the best satire of teen social groups ever made.
I also highly recommend 1/3 (One third) if you like "moral dilemma" films. Very quiet, very poignant, and very understated. Almost no dialogue, so if you're an action addict, you might not like it. It's kind of like "Rear Window" meets "Last Days."
Love is the irresistable desire to be irresistably desired. Mark Twain.
that sounds like an interesting movie, 1/3 that is. im not really much of an action movie watcher. i also like when movies dont use dialogue very much. however, you used the words poignant and understated to describe it which rubs me the wrong way. dont know why, but when people tell me something is poignant it makes me wish theyd just go to hell and die. something about that word.

It's a good word. Would you rather me use the incredibly blechy "moving?" Or how about "emo?" Your irrational hatred of perfectly good words will land you on a poignard some day.
Love is the irresistable desire to be irresistably desired. Mark Twain.
City of God?
Eternal Sunshine...?
American History X?
Chinatown?
Snatch?
The Big Lebowki?
One of my favorite older movies is "Double Indemnity"
Seen them all?
And I can't believe people didn't like "Children of Men". I thought it was excellent. And I completely agree with this:
the best thing about it was the cinematography. some of those shots were just incredible. that car chase scene, or the one at the end where he's running through the streets. that's some shit to be studied in film school there.
