MATRIX/Wachowski Bros Appreciation Thread
Can I tell you all, I am awaiting the Matrix sequels (Reloaded & Revolutions) with breathless anticipation...I am so psyched, I could just jump out of my skin.
I also happen to think the Wachowski brothers are GODLIKE GENIUSES--I mean come on! The creators of not only THE MATRIX, but the supremely sexy BOUND, and these guys used to write comics...
Anybody else digging on these brilliant auteurs?
 i am a beautiful and unique snowflake
What? WHAT? You have the script for RELOADED???

Although I think the Wachowski's are brilliant, and definately way smarter than me, I wouldn't go as far as calling them "Godlike Geniuses". They did admit to borrowing from a lot of other sources in coming up with the Matrix, but eh, who gives a fuck. The Matrix is fucking awesome and I too can't wait till Reloaded & Revolutions!
I just checked out some clips from the Animatrix DVD and it also looks pretty fuckin awesome.
How the fuck did you come upon a copy of the script Pan? They're keeping a tight lid on this movie, so to be able to get a copy of the script would be quite the feat.
Suck me beautiful...

Anyone see the first part of The Animatrix? Very cool.

Okay, Fucko, perhaps I might have overstated it (hey I'm prone to hyperbole anyway, and I genuinely love and enjoy these guys' works).
Sure, they are not seminal by any stretch of the imagination: they're a little bit of William Gibson, a little bit of Katsuhiro Otomo, a little bit of HK action, a little bit of (as Brock pointed out) the Ancient Greeks, a little bit of Biblical lore, a little bit of Buddhism, a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll, etc...But that's just life in the post-modern pop culture. What I like about the Wachowskis is not only do they draw from the very best and intelligent of sources, they freely ACKNOWLEDGE their source material. Also, I believe they are "Godlike" in that they have successfully created a cohesive, seamless, mythological cosmos for their Matrix. So, they didn't invent the wheel, but they sure made it fun to roll.
There are plenty of artists, from Tarantino to our own beloved Chucky P., who are admittedly derivative...but the true value of their work lies in their talent to transmute preceding older source material into something fresh, amazing, and genuinely enjoyable. Even Shakespeare, God to English literature if there ever was one, was derivative in that sense.
P.S. How do you know the Wachowskis are smarter than you? You could be a Godlike genius in your own right!

Now thats an understatment.
But anyway, I loved The Matrix, but I do think if Neo is going to do all this 'cool fighting' in the sequels, that would be a BIG continuality error.
There is a difference between a pyschopath and a neurotic. A pyschopath thinks two and two are five. A neurotic knows that two and two are four, but he worries about it.

Official Plot Outlines
That plot description for The Matrix Reloaded on the Village Cinemas website, which is a division of Village Roadshow production company (yes, the same company that's one of the makers of The Matrix films), sure is interesting: "To quash the impending rebellion, the matrix releases a computer virus so deadly that agents must align with rebellious forces to fight it."
[scoop: Comimg Attractions, September 16, 2002]
Rumoured Plot Outlines
Neo and the rebel leaders estimate that they have 72 hours until 250,000 probes discover Zion and destroy it and its inhabitants. During this, Neo must decide how he can save Trinity from a dark fate in his dreams.
[source: The Pacer, January 24, 2003]
Neo is trapped inside the crumbling Matrix while the others rush to protect Zion from the machines, the end is about to be determined as to who'll survive in the human vs. machines war.
[source: DarkHorizons, April 9, 2002]
Neo will discover he got a son before get got out from The Matrix and he did a big mistake thinking he was the one, actually it was his son. Trinity and others will try then to get out the son of Neo from The Matrix but Neo thinks the child must just stand into The Matrix cause he can't live in the real and polluted world.
[source: Counting Down (Sumakhet), July 10, 2001]
The basis of the story is rooted in Christian mythology, keeping in touch with the Christ theme of the first film. The machines continue to attempt to penetrate Zion, but they cannot, because they are not human enough. So they devise a way to fool with Zion from the inside out. Since the machines outnumber the humans, the war must be fought where the humans have the advantage - The Matrix. Neo goes in and attempts to access into the program - not the Matrix itself, but the AI that control the software - but the agents have already set a trap for him.
[source: Coming Soon, June 24, 2001]
"Neo fights himself" - His eyes snap open, he is in the Matrix with Trinity, and are willing to go to the Oracle, but sudenly Trinity sees Neo across the street and calls him, but Neo is next to her, and they realize there is another Neo, so agent Smith tells them they could copy his format so they would fight him, and the battle starts.
[source: thematrixonline.com (submitted by "Confidential movies"), May 23, 2001]
Manex and the Wachowski's have had discussions about "raising the concept of bullet-time to the next level," as reported at the San Diego Comic Convention (August 1999).
There's another human who can alter the reality of the Matrix (like Neo) but is an ally of the machines. Our scooper referred to these people who can change the Matrix's reality as "Manipulators".
["Mr. Chop" is a known associate of Agent Smith.]
IGN Movies reported on October 1st, 1999, the Wachowski brothers and Manex Entertainment ("bullet-time" effects) have discussed a car chase sequence in the second Matrix film that promises to re-juvinate this form of action scene. As the story goes, Neo is being chased by a group of Agents, racing down city streets to try and lose his pursuers... except the Agents are jumping into different drivers' bodies during the chase sequence.
The character of Trinity could be "displaced in a temporal reality" and Neo has to rescue her. The character of Trinity might or might not be... an agent! And as for Zion..."storyboards are circulating showing a chase around Zion's 'Core Conscience', which bares more than a passing similarity to Big Ben!" Wild.
[source: Dark Horizons]
Silver revealed "In this movie, the story is continuing." And "Essentially, the boys [the Wachowski brothers] intended to make Matrix because they wanted to find a way to make a superhero movie today where the audience would accept superheroes in a way that wouldn't feel to them like Saturday morning television. And they made the first movie to set up that world. In the sequels, you're going to see that Neo has superhuman powers, and they can really do what they've always wanted to do." In addition, Silver confirmed that audiences will finally see the last stronghold of humanity, Zion.

Beautiful and Intelligent! God only knows I'm due for a trip down to HeLLA...hahahah!
You're definately right. No matter what you do nowadays, your idea is taken or influenced by a number of different sources. Total and complete originality is extemely hard to come by, but the Wachoski's definately do come pretty close don't they, in the sense that, as you mentioned, they have created their own mythological world (mythological as far as we know anyway!).
Hmmm, now that you mention it, maybe I am godlike in some way or another.....
Suck me beautiful...

PAN!!!
:)
Can I please thank you for sending out the Reloaded script. Even if it only turns out to be a MacGuffin, it was really cool of you to go to all that trouble. SO THANKS!!!
I am really impressed with your script collection. Your list is comprised of many of my all-time favorites! I have the "Memento" script, which is really wonderful, and a bunch of X-files episodes (shooting scripts).
I noticed you have "La Jetee" on your list--what is that exactly? All I know is that it's some french film, but one cool enough to inspire not only "Twelve Monkeys" but "Donnie Darko" (2 movies I also love). Can you tell me anything about it? I've never seen it.
 i am a beautiful and unique snowflake
It's a series of still photographs arranged to tell a story.
A child witnesses a things that stick with him.
He sees a man die.
Then his country is destroyed... forcing its inhabitants underground.
The inhabitants become prisoners that the are experimented on.
They then select a test subject.
They tell the guinea pig that the only hope for salvation is in time travel/manipulation.
They go through a serires of failed attempts of sending him to the past until they finally succeed.
He meets a girl he feels is familiar in the past, in fact the only thing he feels familiar with. They pull him back to the future then send him back.
He is closer to the girl this time. They are without memories, without plans. Time builds itself painlessly around them. Their only landmarks are the flavor of the moment they are living and the markings on the walls.
He begins to remember more as they live more...
He gets messages frm the future world he saved saying they want to bring him there.
We find out he is the child from the beginning and he wants to stay with his childhood.
He goes to meet the girl and realizes he can't escape time aman from the future is sent to kill him and he realizes that as a child he witnessed his own death...
I've only seen bits of the short so this is from the script. If the script isn't on Rents link, a sweet one I might add, I'lll email it to you.
on a side note, have you seen Watership Down? I heard Donnie Darko was also based loosley on it also.

Hi Pan! I checked Rents' link--no "La Jetee". If you don't mind sending it to me, I would be really grateful. Your description of it sounds amazing. How they can convey a story that complex in still images blows my mind. I'd lreally like to see that film--what did you think about it visually, from the clips you saw? I'm not sure outside of film school there's many places you'd hear about "La Jetee"--are you a film student?
 i am a beautiful and unique snowflake
La Jetee was good. I first heard about it back when 12 Monkeys came out, and a year or so ago I found it on a DVD of short films, called simply Short 2.
By the way, I wish to add to this thread my appreciation of both The Matrix and the Wachowskis (I dug Bound, too). Assassins was crap, though I know they just wrote the script.
what about you, are you a film student?
I'm a Literature student, actually, but I think out here in L.A. we are all film student/cineasts; that's the industry of our town, our equivalent of coal mining. I think the people crazy enough to live here kind of all harbor secret desires to work with film in one way or another. Even if you don't work in the biz, you generally & genuinely have a love for cinema that permeates the city.
I'd love to write screenplays. I took a film class, and am planning to try my hand at some.
