Just got home from Lollapalooza. Was pretty good, but Audioslave stole the show. They were amazing. Made my night.

Saw it last night. It was alright, but the whole thing felt kind of soulless, especially considering the whole audience just sat there until nightfall and Audioslave came on. I won a sidestage pass for QOTSA (the mindfield cellphone stuff. i cheated. once I found out another guy was doing the same exact thing I was- getting people to text message a two digit code to the same number- I figured it wouldn't be too hard, and it wasn't) Kind of cool, but not much more than a novelty. I was sorely tempted to knock over the skinny security guard watching over us and run out onto the stage and jump off into the pit. I think I might have done it if I'd thought the pit was alive enough to catch me.

Anyway, I think the whole festival music scene is dying a slow death. I dunno, could be DC, could be the complete commercialization.

When I went, Audioslave got the croud pretty riled up. Everyone was standing. And Janes Addiction got singalong and shit. Too bad their music isn't too great.

And Queens are awesome, too bad they didn't get a night set.

Audioslave should do a Rage song or two when they play live. You can tell the band wants to do it, I mean Zach was good, but its the music of their songs that was amazing. I feel that the're holding back now. Although they put the White Stripes in their place with their amazing cover of 7 Nation Army. They had the crowd sing the guitar part, pretty frunny indeed. I felt bad for J5 and QOTSA. They really deserved a huge crowd, but everyone was spending their time (and $60 admissions) at the X-Box tent. My friends and I booed the winners of the games because who the hell pays for a concert and then spends the whole time playing video games? And don't get me started on the commercialism.

the jam bands of the world have taken this idea and run with it. don't be fooled by the "hippies" though: peace, love and happiness has a dollar value and where there's money to be made, there's marketing gurus with exploitation schemes.

i don't know if i should be proud of this, but i attended the first three lollapaloozas. 1993 was the peak year, in my opinion.

I worked one; whichever year had the Beasties/Smashing Pumpkins headlining... I got ejected for getting people in for free. Still got to see a lot of good bands/chat with Nick Cave over beer about books. Kinda would have like to seen the first year. But, really, festival shows pretty much bite.

Modern Dance, yeah, freakin' excellent record (their first, iirc.)

It's available on CD http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000007OSV/qid=1060974170/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_2/002-4001994-0138410?v=glance&s=music&n=507846 thru Amazon (or, I suppose, a number of other resources...) Also, check out their 2nd, "Dub Housing".

What Nick Cave did you hear?

This is where my age shines through: MBV = My Bloody Valentine, right? Are they still around? Also, I have no idea who any of those others are. Plain

well the silver mt zion and set fire to flames are part of the whole GOdSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR entourage. and as for mogwai and slint, im surprised youve never heard of slint, one name STEVE ALBINI, one of the biggest albums ever was spiderland, they changed alot for rock, mogwai is some instrumental rock stuff, pretty bad ass. and yeah mbv is my bloody valentine. its funny that you ask if their still around its rumored that they are getting back together to finish up work on an old cd and go on tour. download set fire to flames and silver mt zion they are great noise records escpecially set fire to flames, im loving it more and more everytime i listen.

i hope that covers everything

OK. Albini I know. From way back. Yeah. Still dunno Slint.

Nocturama, I don't believe I've ever actually heard. Let Love In sorta spoiled him for me... Even though Murder Ballads came out later and is purdy durn good. But I haven't stayed up-to-date on him in recent years.

Buy his book, And The Ass Saw The Angel. It's the one book I've prolly read more'n any other 'cepting Lester Bangs'.
