listening to?
Inspired by a thread on other forums I visit, what are you listening to now? Or what do you listen to most?
Right now I'm listening to Where Is My Mind? by the pixes (remember the end of fight club?) and the sounds of conversation in the computer room...

War? by System of a Down. In a way it's pretty funny and ironic 'cause it suits the whole "War on Iraq/Terrorism" situation.

Helium I now believe was the most overlooked, under reated band of the 90's
The Posies, Cat power, Boards of Canada, QOTSA, Meshuggah, Sleater-Kinney, Junior Brown, Crystal Method and the undeniable Slayer.
Now..what the hell does this Sigur Ros sound like? All I hear is hype on them. The last time I heard so much hype was with Cornershop, and they do absolutely nothing for me or the advancement of modern music.

Favorites are NIN and Tool (for many, many others, see one of the other music topics, can't remember which one right now).
Just finished listening to Down's NOLA.
Now playing what I consider a Guilty pleasure, Gravity Kills.
Yes, they are industri-pop knockoffs of NIN and countless others, and aren't nearly as good as Trent Reznor, but I love to listen to their first CD anyway.
I remember picking up a Gravity Kills CD after it came out because it had the song "Guilty" which always reminded me of the opening NIN sequence in Fincher's "Se7en" with those tiny clippings and handwriting and black and white notebooks and edgy camerawork... I remember seeing them open for a Depeche Mode concert as well, and being sort of unimpressed with their live performance, but yeah, still enjoy the cd very much... nice pick, William.
Been going through my old Suicidal Tendencies, Pennywise, Black Flag and NOFX stuff lately...

been listening to lots of noam chomsky spoken word lately, been feeling burnt out on music lately except for elliot smith
Noam Chomsky is good stuff. He was given some sort of award by my school, so I was lucky enough to be able to see him speak.

allow me to preface my defence by saying that I have always had a thing for camp, kitsch, tackiness, and things best described as "it's so bad it's good". (Hence, owning movies like "Incubus" and "The First Nudie Musical".)
That said... of the four reality shows i watch, three i watch because they fit into the above descriptions. i can't see anyone taking "Joe Millionaire", "High School Reunion", or "The Surreal Life" with any degree of seriousness. All the people on them seem almost like parodys of themselves, and i think it's just hysterical. I mean, watching Corey Feldman cry because the brainy chick from Beverly Hills 90210 picked on him? Hearing some golddigger on "Joe Millionaire" say that if she had money, she'd go bathe third world children because she's "mercenary that way"?
Oh. My. God.
It's just too ridiculous to take seriously. It's easy to laugh at, and well... I like to laugh. (Of course, seeing how much more well-adjusted even *I* am compared to these people plays a part as well...)
I will, however, freely admit to genuinely liking "The Mole". The people on that generally have to have an iq of three digits, so they've got a leg up on all the others.
debacle is a verb
I know where your coming from and I completly understand.
Since we're all friends here, I have a confession to make...
I feel compelled beyond my control to watch The Antique Road Show every fucking day.
I don't even own any antique furniture for christsake.
In all honesty my only real quam with realit.v. is The Osbornes, it tends to scare me is all. I mean you can actually watch Ozzy get more senile in the course of the half hour show. Breaks my heart I tell ya, breaks my heart.

Svpernaut, through our past discussions we have established that much of your political views are conservative. I also noticed that you listed rage against the machine (a favorite of mine). I was wondering how your political views affected your feelings toward the issues and ideas that rage stood for.

DNT, you yourself have come to the conclusion that I am a rich white texan that is super-conservative... I never said I was. music is an artform and should never be censored. Just because I vote and defend republican values doesn't mean that I agree with everything they do/say, because no one is that cookie-cutter. I do believe less-government means a better country, and republicans have a lot of views that defend that statement. I am interested in music that is thought provoking no matter how distasteful it may seem...
the bottom line is bands like rage against the machine got the young people of America to think on their own and to question everything, and that in itself is the beauty of America. To me, that translates into a Republican life-style because that means less govenment to deal with. That means giving young tax-payers the ability to invest part of their social security into stocks, that means to allow parents to send their children to private or public schools with vouchers, that means less taxes, that means educating the poor not letting them live on welfare all their lives, etc.
I don't know where all the leftists and liberals get the idea that all republicans are rich business men who grew up with a silver spoon in their mouths, because I am far from that. on a side note i'm not going to get into a debate about how you disagree with my views of the Republican party, because that would be a waste of breath... and we both know that.

Svpernaut, good answer. However, I never called you rich or white (I did at one point refer to you as a conservative Texan, which was based upon fact). I do credit RATM for getting me off my ass and following current events and questioning everything I hear. You also called me a liberal, and I dislike being called a liberal very much. I do lean to the left, but I like to think of myself as moderate. For example, I am a product of Catholic school education, so vouchers would have been very nice for my family.
Also, concerning tax cuts, I wish they would better benefit me rather than the top tax bracket (something that I am not and never will be apart of).

you see, i call you liberal because that is a liberal "brain-wash" mechanism. from President Bush's last tax cut I myself, a single young American far from being rich received a refund check for $400, in addition to my regular refund. bush's tax cuts are for ALL across the board, not just the rich... and for anyone to say that they are is just telling an old-wive's tale. please see this direct quote from the President's State of the Union speech on 01.29.03
And under my plan, as soon as I've signed the bill, this extra money will start showing up in workers' paychecks.
Instead of gradually reducing the marriage penalty, we should do it now.
Instead of slowly raising the child credit to $1,000, we should send the checks to American families now.
This tax relief is for everyone who pays income taxes, and it will help our economy immediately. Ninety-two million Americans will keep this year an average of almost $1,100 more of their own money. A family of four with an income of $40,000 would see their federal income taxes fall from $1,178 to $45 per year.
And our plan will improve the bottom line for more than 23 million small businesses...
now don't you think that if those numbers were a flat out lie that the press would have a field day with it? sure rich people receive the most money back, because it is simple... they pay more taxes so their tax cuts should be bigger, but they still pay the same percentage as the rest of america. rich people shouldn't pay a higher percentage "Just Because" they make more. since when should Americans be penalized for being successful? this is the land of opportunity for a reason.
... right now I'm listening to "Feel My Heat" the acoustic version, lyrics and guitar by Reed Rothchild and vocals by Dirk Diggler. Produced by Jack Horner and "The Colonel". Lets see, my parents (as I am not yet cut from the umbilical yet) received a tax cut of about $600. That is a drop in the bucket compared to the $130,000+ I will be in debt after I complete my education so that I can make something of myself in this country. Not to mention what med school is going to cost me. So I would rather the government stop making silly little tax cuts and do something that may help alleviate the extremely high cost of education in this country.
And don't even get me started on the health care situation...

you are going to medical school, and obviously an extremely high-priced private school at 130k for a 4 year degree. no one twisted your arm to go to an over-priced, over-hyped college. you can get a 4 year degree all over this country for less then 10 grand including books, sometimes even way less if you'd rather go to a 2 year community college or prep-school first... and there are PLENTY of ways to get your school payed for with via grants, students generally don't take the initiative to apply however. without trying very hard i received about 10k in grants when i went to school, with no problem and i was far from poor and far from rich.
in this nation anyone can get a higher education if they put their mind to it. the funding is there, people just don't get off of their lazy asses and use it. if THESE three guys can do it, anyone who tries can... because they grew up in some of the worst conditions.
now onto your poke at the healthcare system... President Bush also addressed that very issue in his State of the Union:
Instead, we must work toward a system in which all Americans have a good insurance policy, choose their own doctors, and seniors and low-income Americans receive the help they need. (Applause.) Instead of bureaucrats and trial lawyers and HMOs, we must put doctors and nurses and patients back in charge of American medicine. (Applause.)
Health care reform must begin with Medicare; Medicare is the binding commitment of a caring society. (Applause.) We must renew that commitment by giving seniors access to preventive medicine and new drugs that are transforming health care in America.
Seniors happy with the current Medicare system should be able to keep their coverage just the way it is. (Applause.) And just like you -- the members of Congress, and your staffs, and other federal employees -- all seniors should have the choice of a health care plan that provides prescription drugs. (Applause.)
My budget will commit an additional $400 billion over the next decade to reform and strengthen Medicare. Leaders of both political parties have talked for years about strengthening Medicare. I urge the members of this new Congress to act this year. (Applause.)
To improve our health care system, we must address one of the prime causes of higher cost, the constant threat that physicians and hospitals will be unfairly sued. (Applause.) Because of excessive litigation, everybody pays more for health care, and many parts of America are losing fine doctors. No one has ever been healed by a frivolous lawsuit. I urge the Congress to pass medical liability reform. (Applause.)
but i guess you already knew that.
That wouldn't even scratch the surface of the health care problem first of all, and secondly I will believe it when I see it.
Don't tell me that I haven't tried to get scholarships and grants, but me being a white middle-class male from long island doesn't help my cause (you may be surprised that I agree with GWB on affirmative action- I am very much opposed to it). Second of all, when applying to med school, no matter what they tell you, a highly regarded college (such as those listed in US News etc...) looks better than a community college. I know staying in NY would have been cheaper, but I wanted to experience a new area. I realize that I chose this path, but all I am suggesting is that maybe the government could provide some sort of aid: whether it be vouchers (such as like those suggested for private high school), or a loan system with a very small interest, and whatever else.
On a side note, the democratic guy (I forget his name) who was running for governor of NY against Pataki suggested making SUNY schools free of charge for NY residents who had better than a B+ in high shool. It is ideas like these that I would like to see rather than throwing us $400 (its like throwing a dog a bone).
well, myself and most americans are worried about feeding kids under the age of 18, and 400 bucks more for your average family a year is a lot... and that is being uped to over 1k a year. there are already thousands of ways set in place to help people get into college, it's the finishing high school and wanting to go to college that we need to work on.
My parents are feeding kids under the age of 18 as well. I guess I am being very conservative by looking out for myself.
