Jazz
I like to say to people that I like "all types of music" but I am lacking in some categories, namely jazz. Anyone got any suggestions? I always like to listen to someone via MP3 before I buy their stuff and this is mainly the reason why I haven't gotten into jazz... no one seems to like them on kazaa etc.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Miles Davis
Thelonious Monk (those two are very good together too)
Duke Ellington
Ella Fitzgerald
Don't rule out the blues either: Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, B. B. King. Mmmm.
There is hope, but not for us.
Old Jazz:
Helen Humes
Ella Fitz (definitly)
Lucille Bogan
Cole Porter
Count Basie
Glen Miller
Cab Calloway
Thelonious Monk (really great piano)
New Jazz:
Joe Sample
Ramsey Lewis
Herbie Hancock
Boney James
Grover Washington Jr.
Spyra Gyra
and DJ Shadow has some great jazz fusion records
and peanut butter wolf, try working with the miles davis quintet, i think that has miles duke and thelonius, im not sure though buts its a bad record
Ella Fitgerald
Sarah Vaughan
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong duets
Duke Ellington
Billie Holliday
(I'm mostly into female vocal jazz, so those are just a few)
Mother Superior: "Would sir care for a starter? Some garlic bread perhaps?"
Renton: "No, thank you. I'll proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please."
There's just never enough room for all the quotes that seem necessary.
Myteenageriot you gotta gotta check out Helen Humes if you like female vocals shes hard to find but worth it.
SUN RA!
Count Basie : 'The complete Atomic Basie' (Blue Note)
Dave Brubeck Quartet : 'Time out' (Columbia)
Duke Ellington : 'Money Jungle' (Blue Note)
Miles Davis : 'Kind of Blue' (Columbia)
Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington : 'The Great Summit' (EMI)
Duke Ellington : 'The essential collection 1927-1962' (Columbia)
Louis Armstrong : 'The quintessence' (Fremaux et associes)
Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald
All these artists are the cream of the crop, and also very accessible.
Fortunately for jazz fans, copyright laws expire 50 years after original release, so there is a better access to pre-1950's recordings (hence covering the golden era of jazz) for very cheap prices.

Miles Davis' Spanish something... that's a gooood record.
Duke Ellington: Live at Newport
John Coltrane: Giant Steps
John Coltrane: Blue Trane
Hell, anything by John Coltrane.
Charles Mingus: Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
Thelonius Monk: Underground
Miles Davis : 'Sketches of Spain' ?

Yes
All good suggestions. I will add 2 newer ones.
Medeski, Martin & Wood
or
Matthew Shipp
Plus, you should really check out Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Kind of in the Jazz catagory. www.antibalas.com
If you do not own this CD, you are a dumbass and you have absolutely no musical education whatsoever:
Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
If you do not own these CDs, you are mildly retarded, like XChuck on a good day:
Miles Davis, Bitches Brew
Art Blakey and Thelonius Monk (can't remember title, doh!)
John Coltrane, Giant Steps (I know it's been said already, but its important)
Frank Zappa, Make a Jazz Noise Here (hard to find)
Weather Report, Heavy Weather (Fuck yeah, Jaco!)
Any Billie Holiday CD
Any Sarah Vaughn CD
Any Ella Fitzgerald CD
At least one Frank Sinatra CD
If you are into experimental music, though, try John Zorn, that guy is out of his fucking skull! He works with Mike Patton (yeah, that one) alot.
Good luck and NEVER diss the JAZZ
Charles Mingus is rocks.
Dexter Gordon. Get his "Ballads" album and invite a girl over and watch her clothes fall off. Hell, watch MY clothes fall off.
A lot of people already said it, but I'll confirm - any Miles & Monk album you can find (them together) will be golden because it's not JUST Miles...but Miles AND Monk.
I have Cannonball Adderly's "Finest Hour" album. It's good, but I'm not into it as much as Dexter Gordon's stuff.
I'll also confirm - The Bad Plus. Kind of weird but definitely worth it.
And Art Blakey. YES.
Also...Ramsey Lewis. Yes. And if you can get your hands on some Cedar Walton, you'll enjoy it. I saw him in Oakland a few years ago...it was WAY excellent.
More modernly speaking, give Greyboy a listen. You may want to try his "Freestylin" album or even "Mastered the Art". "Greybreaks" is cool, but more narrow.
Also, an album sure to make a date successful is "Friday Night in San Francisco" by John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia and Al Dimeola. It's three guys doing FAST guitarwork. Also check out their individual albums - Mclaughlin also had a side project called The Mahavishnu Orchestra, which did old fusion music - amazing stuff.

Mahavishnu... yesss...
Also Shanti.
hehe, klopper likes Mahavishnu Orchestra. I am the uber-Mahavishnu fan.
"Birds of Fire" is most famous and required listening.
Get Terence Blanchard's new album, "Bounce." And listen online to WFPK in Louisville, the best jazz station around (when they play jazz).

Now wait just a second. I might have deserved the others, but why do I deserve it now? Nina Simone is fantastic.
nina simone and diana krall are my recommendations

Wow. This little thread got CRAZY. People telling me to abuse my girlfriend, people showing an alarming lack of respect for women as a whole, people questioning my masculinity in some kind of bizarre machoistic pissing-contest. Hell, I even got called stuffy.
Pop pretending to be Jazz.
Damn you Tuffy, straight to hell. How could you possibly say that Billie or Ella are jazz, but exclude Nina. I am not talking new wave Nina - that crap that she did the last decade... but early, dark, sad Nina. If I didn't think you were so damn funny I would walk over to your little house in Brocks Pants and shove toys from Hot Topic down your throat.
What kinda Toys????
Oh you know. The usual spongebob playtoy, the plastic fairies or faeries or however those kids are spelling it, black plastic steering wheel covers dressed in red flames, Living Dead Dolls, and of course a My Little Pony.
Wow. I do believe this is the longest thread I have seen that has been helpful to me/on topic. Thank you for your suggestions; I am well on my way to enjoying the best of jazz
Also: a beret.

Totally forgot. I'm with you on that.
Did someone say "Birds of Fire"? I LOVE that album. "Inner Mounting Flame" wasn't as good. Birds of Fire makes me want to have anal sex with nonphysical ideas like "hope" and "mercy."

IMF was their ebst shit.
Nina=good.
Also I recommend the score from Porgy and Bess. Though I guess it would techinically be called an opera, it still has Ella and Louie and rocks all other scores.
There is hope, but not for us.
Inner Mounting Flame is honestly my favorite album overall... or maybe that live one... but Celestial Terrestrial Commuters is ausum... I LOVE IT ALL!!!

gah!
There is hope, but not for us.
Ok, I just downloaded Thelonious Monk's Brilliant Colors. I'm not sure if I'm hearing things or I donwloaded the wrong thing or the sender screwed up, but all the songs start the same. Sure, they are different lengths, and I haven't really listened to them individually, but I don't like that they all sound exactly the same in the beginning. Did I get a screwed up version or am I just missing out on some cool style where you have a base to go on and then improvise?

Happy Apple
The Bad Plus
Miles Davis
Brand X
Ohm
YOU FUCKED THE WORST, NOW FIGHT THE BEST!
