"I like all kinds of music","people I hate"
It's finally happened. I have become one of the people I hate.
It's the type of people that when you ask them what kind of music they're into, they'll say they like everything. I always thought it was bullshit, that they had to of had a preference for one specific genre, but now I sorta see that they don't.
I used to be all about Alt rock, but now I find myself enjoying everything. Rap, sure. Hiphop, yup. Country, why the fuck not. Even screamo occasionally. I grew up with my parents listening to classic rock so I've always listened to that.
I'm sorta ashamed of myself for liking all types of music, but what the hell.

I'm so much worse.....
I like rap as much as classical and everything in between...... really being in orchestra for 5 years has fucked with my musical taste. Loads of my friends are black, so I like hiphop and rap. I like old rock. I grew up listening to latin........ now my best friend is into techno, so the ONE thing I could say I didn't like...... I now like.
I've never been ashamed of it though, but yeah I made some people mad because they didn't believe me.

What do you play?
I'm not like outright ashamed of it, but I won't listen to hiphop if I have my windows down in my car or when other people are around and stuff, but when I'm alone

The violin. I almost quit this year but people convince me not too. I don't suck but I just never practice so, I'm alway in the back..... but I don't mind so it's ok!
Haha, actually in the car is the ONLY time I listen to hiphop and such, REALLY loud..... it frightens the old people.

Have you ever seen The Red Violin? All violin players should see that movie!
Country music sucks, the end.
There is hope, but not for us.
...... really being in orchestra for 5 years has fucked with my musical taste.
agreed tenfold.
you emerse yourself in music enough and think about it more than "this sounds good" you appreciate / like things so much more.
Country music sucks, the end.
do you not like Johnny Cash?
Dammit.
There is hope, but not for us.

win.
agreed tenfold.

YES!!!
I now like classical and jazz because I'm thinking "Wow, I wish I could fucking play like that!"
And well, I grew up listening to old latiny stuff, which is really just like new latiny stuff, which is really just like hiphop..... whatever, it makes sense to me.
do you not like Johnny Cash?
No matter what kinda music you say you hate, there's probably at least a song that you'd like in that catagory..... and I love cash!!!
Dad > Zepplin, Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Black Sorrows etc.
Mum> ACDC, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.
and lots of Jazz / Blues / Classical.
Then I got really into my music and yeah.
And it feels amazing to be making my own.
so you like this?

ha I have also reached that point!
My tastes have changed over the years but I've always been dedicated to a certain genre (yes I was a goth in my younger years haha) and now I just like what I like whatever that is. But I always hated those people that are like "oh I like anything!" cos I always thought it was such a copout.
My overwhelming love is for 80s music but I also love listening to surf, lounge, swing, punk, east coast rap, rock n roll, hair metal, electro, etc etc
There are a lot of types of music that I still can't stand. I don't like metal, of any kind. I don't like rap or hip hop. I don't like West Coast cotemporary jazz. I don't like New Age or New Wave.
Maybe I'm missing out on the glories of the universe but I'mma just go huddle in the corner with my Bright Eyes and Joni Mitchell and be content.
There is hope, but not for us.
Mum> ACDC, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.

Wow. Your mom kicks ass.
Get on over to my website, young'un! www.subvertfromwithinrecords.blogspot.com
i hate you people because you dont care enough about music to get enthusiastic about your answer.

Exactly.

you always have some favourites but if you can find one good song in every genere and geniunely like it then I think that you have overcome the boundaries of just one type of music. I listen to metal (all kinds of it, some like it more, some less, but generaly like it), pop music, classical, some latin singers, some rap and hip hop things, japanese music, some country, tango, french music, psychedelic, good electronic music,I even have a favourtite polka act. The only thing I really, really despise, because its not music, but just a packed product, are the american idol type shows, those things are just as scary as "reggaton"
As a kid I used to be like Manowar...
Anyone like Primus? Or Les Claypool in that manner?
i like him. when i do.
Who's your favorite Polka act?
the continentals. seriously.
I usually answer with "anything but country" and although I do have things I have preference to, I can listen to just about anything and be content with it.
i ususally answer the same, but its not entirely true. i love johnny cash, and david allen coe.
Anyone like Primus? Or Les Claypool in that manner?
i freaking LOVE les claypool. any and everythign he has ever done. i saw primus back in 92 with my dad. awesome show. i think my favorite project was Oysterhead, though. les, trey and stew copeland really brought it. amazing shit. i really WILL listen to just about anyhting. i am not too much into techno, trance, house music, drums and bass, but i have been known to enjoy each at different times. when a song does it for me, it does it for me, plain and simple. i refuse to limit my experience based on genre.
Liking all kinds of music isn't an issue... unless you're one of those fuckers who's just out of high school, or thereabouts, and you're only saying that you like all kinds of music because you don't really listen to very much of it, and you're only saying that you like everything because you're too afraid of being judged by the music you like. Cause that's just not cool. And then you ask them what some of their favourites are, and they tell you, once again, that they like everything.
I hate you people who answer I like everything. Make up your damn minds already. I DJ and make mixtapes and when I get one of your kind coming up to me asking me to play some shit, you mofos never fuckin know what you want to hear. Because you don't care enough about music to make a damn decision.
Make a decision already and be happy with it. I could put a track on a CD of me farting you mofos would like it probably. And don't be so damn influenced by radio. They only play 12 damn songs a day. So when I ask what do you like I don't wanna hear you say "Oh I like some hiphop like Akon and shit." Akon is not hiphop - its complete shit. That fucker can't sing.
so you like this?

fuck yes. i heard a song with les playpool and buckethead, once. it was amazing. and primus is awesome when they try to be.

tom of the fjords
wow
this is great
there is only two types of music, music that sucks and music that does not suck.
I don't see how anybody's taste in music can be so one dimensional. I listen to about 90% rock and I always come back to rock, and it seems like my soul only really truly corresponds with rock, but I do enjoy every major type of music. Thing is, if it has lyrics, those lyrics can be good, or clever, or well put together, and that's that really.
Country music is underestimated because about 99% of it is such, such shit. Does anybody not like the song Thunder Rolls? Does anybody realize what it's about? It's pretty simple but nobody really listens to it. Ace of Hearts, Country Boy Can Survive, Meet in the Middle... there are some solid country tracks. My cousin is a music guru and has burned 100 song CDs of classic rock, new rock, and rap, which he gives to friends and family, and pretty much everybody that knows him spings these CDs on the constant. I wish I had his country CD. It's only about 25 songs but they are the absolute BEST of country, and there are some epic songs on there.
I think the thing is with country and rap, the most hated genres, is that you just have to not take them seriously.
I dunno, sticking strictly to 90% of any brand of music seems pretty one-dimensional to me. You gotta work on getting that down to like 74-77% or somewhere therebouts. You're right about if anything has lyrics (or music) behind it then it can be something good. I think what puts rock above country or rap in everyone's mind is that rock really truly had that Golden Age to it back in the 60's/70's. Not that those two and other types haven't had great periods of music coming out of them but, man, nothing like that foundation rock laid down back then in the collective unconcious.
I think another knock against rap and country is that there's just so much garbage to sift through before you find anything good. But i also think that, on average, they have about the same amount of crap as any other genre. It's just a smaller focus of their body of work that makes it look like more. And how can you say to not take them seriously? Both those genres have some really intelligent music that absolutely deserves to be taken seriously.
All that being said, I can not stand reggae. I just flat out hate it. Every single reggae song I hear sounds like every other one. I swear it's some practical joke the Jamaicans are playing on us "white-eye" and bob marley recorded one song way back when and they've just been tweaking the speed and timbre of it ever since and giggling their little asses off at us ever since!
I just don't have the ear fot it.
"Country music" isn't music.
And I'll only listen to rap if I'm at a really big party or at a club.
Save gospel for the church that I don't go to.
Death metal, prog rock, and indie/folk are all I need.
Do you know how close folk music is to a lot of country music, stylistically?
Plus, what about the so called alt-country bands like Lambchop, Midlake, Sparklehorse etc etc...
Anyway, I can't argue with any genre that produced Dolly Parton's Nine To Five. Wooha!
Indeed, the styles are similar. And I won't write off the country songs that are worth recognition midst the shit and spittle of the genre. Songs like... well... you know... something about friends in low places and somebody turning off the lights in Georgia...
Anyways, the biggest difference that I can place upon the two is usually lyrical content. A lot of indie/folk bands are just out of this world with their messages in song. Any good 'ol boy can write a catchy tune about his dog dyin' and his mama cooking peas, but he can't write, "The absence of God will bring you comfort, baby" or "I'm not my body or how I choose to destroy it."
No, but he could write: "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die"
I guess. Fucking Johnny Cash...
Nate:
Rock itself is multi-demensional, though. Hard rock, soft rock, punk rock, indie rock, classic rock, alternative rock, bla bla bla, the genre entails a multitude of sounds. Lots of people love one or several of these strands and hate a few others
And about not taking country seriously, I stand by that. Country music feels comical to me about 99.9% of the time, intelligent or not.
I can't get into reggae.
EDIT: Fuck sakes, why does this take away my formatting when I quote people?
it was always kind of a pointless question, what kind of music do you listen to. instead, I'm gonna start asking people "what are you interested in, that most people are not interested in" as soon as I figure out some way of saying it without sounding like a douche.
Normally, I give options or something when it comes to music.
Like: Have you ever heard any good alternative rock, or are you into other types?
It tends to keep that question at bay, at least for a little. But sometimes those quesitons are so mundane, it's about the same as asking your favorite color.
"I could tell by the tone of his voice that he was trying to make me see his point, but really...all I could see was the big fucking knife."
There are two types of music : the good one and the mediocre one.
It doesn't have anything to do with genres, it is perfectly logical to like Mozart and Bob Dylan, even though stylistically they are at complete opposites, but suffice to say they both kick ass. They have IT. You can't say what IT is, but you recognise it after listening a couple of seconds. If your ears have the right shape, you will catch IT, no matter who plays.
The great classical composers and musicians tend to keep IT better and longer than others, because there is a long work of transmission of the sensitivity involved in the technical learning of that form of music (which is extremely diverse, I know, but it still works on the same basis).
Other styles are characterised by a minimal demand in technical ability (you don't need to be a virtuoso of guitar to play the blues for example). On the other hand, when they are not played with IT, they are just pure bollox. That is what differentiates Johnny Cash from most of the other country singers, and John Lee Hooker from Eric Clapton. Some have it, some don't, no matter how hard they try.
Rock is a bit of a different animal. It is basically a music for young people. And you can't stay young all your life, after a while all you do is pretend. The Beatles split after a decade of incredible musical accomplishments and explorations, when they falt they couldn't do it at that level anymore, and they were right. The Rolling Stones lost IT a long time ago, but hey, some people still come to see them do the same old tricks, so why not start another world tour ?
So yeah, it's okay to have all sorts of music in your collection, as long as it has IT.

Forgot to post the most important :
This kid in the beginning, she plays something like 3 or 4 different notes with her fife, but she definitely has IT already.

PS : one day i'll create that damn blues thread.

There is really nothin wrong with being all over the place musically as long as you can expand on your statement and not just say "oh i like all kinds of music"
for instance when people ask me i just tell them i go in kicks and little tangents with one thing or another
Like right now i am really into Tom waits, Jurrassic 5, Justin Timberlake, Amon tobin, The Damned & Beck (sea change era).
you shouldnt have to explain your self but at the same time if your asked a question you shouldnt snubb it off with a snooty little answer like "oh i like all kinds of music"
.
i remember when this site was very unfriendly to hip-hop, in all four of its forms..
nice to see the change over the years
akon is not hip hop: dudes r&b, and he's nothing special IM[ignorant]O, just not original at all and i can only follow what he says because he says the same shit over and again.
there are only two punk bands that i know: bad religion and nofx. but i can get into rancid and screaming trees.. the thing is, though, with punk, like underground rock and metal, i dont hold enough interest in it to follow the different band names and who's new and who's not.
i listen to classical quite often, though my turn table's been outta commission a few years and the one jen bought me for christmas kinda sucks for music output: staticky, low volume; dont tell her i mentioned it, though.
for hip hop, i have to go back a few years. guess i'm getting older, like when i was a kid listening to hi-c and epmd, the older cats in the neighborhood would refer to krs1 and the even older cats would mention marvin gay and i would laugh a little inside--back when i was a young little shit. i feel those transient neighborhood prophets now though, more and more each year. i mean, what the fuck is lil whayne even rapping about? does that shit even make sense to motherfuckers nowadays?.. i dont know, whatever.
brotha lynch's refuse to looze, now that was a song. outkast's first album, pac's all eyez on me, lynch's loaded, 11/5's fiendin for the funk, eminem's MMLP.. now those were fucking albums. after master p's no-limit lable fucked the game up, the rap game was dry for a while (hip hop in general). dmx helped start the next rap evolution and dre set it straight [straighter] when he brought out eminem and the chronic 2001. even when it falters, once it rises back up it becomes far stronger than before.
country, i have no real interest in. so i tend to refuse, ignorantly, the labeling of johnny cash and kenny rogers in the catagory.
rock, i can stay with or not, but it's seldom a bad listen. but i dont follow it.
i guess, overall, when i'm asked my musical tastes, it's just far easier to say "for the most part, i like all music" than all that honest dribble above. really, though, you could do well replacing all the words above with blah blah blah blah blah and not miss anything.
