.. um, the only thing i know about this new Harry Potter is that I had some annoying kids and their parents wanting to buy Harry Potter costumes and whatnot at my job. Although, it is bit amazing how those young children actually reads that thick (well, it's pretty thick for children's book) book and still want to read more and more and more. I mean, it's kinda stupid how "obsessed" these kids can be, but I guess it's a lot better than that Pokemon craze few years back. After all, at least they're reading.

my view on it too nerd, but still, when people 15 and above aged are obsessed with it and consider it the greatest book of all time, i just wanna fucking beat the crap out of them

I am in love with JK Rowling.

She created something wonderful that keeps kids (and adults) minds alert and interested and hooked. Then she turned it into writing and has finished five books. each successively longer than the last. By the time the series is over, children will be able to say "Yeah, I read a 1,000 page book, what of it?"

Kids will know that reading can be fun, more fun than anything else. They'll know they can conquer long books and be less intimidated by some of the more tome like classics like Atlas Shrugged and Crime and Punishment.

Plus, I'm sure everyone's seen the adults who are reading this book. I know I did. I read the whole thing in one 12 hour sitting. Granted, all I do is read, but there are tons of adults who have come back to reading because of this. An ex-gang member I used to manage who was barely literate learned to read better by cutting his teeth on the Harry Potter books since he liked the movie so much. It may have taken him a few months, but he finished the fourth one and then decided why the hell not keep reading? He bought the Lord of the Rings trilogy next.

I am in love with JK Rowling.

And to boot, she did all of this in a reality TV, video game era. I was pleased with each and every copy of that book my store sold. I knew that someone would be reading and not watching Friends reruns, not watching Adam Sandler movies, not playing XBox or Playstation. It's about bloody time.

JK Rowling has done more for intellectualism, more for writers evereywhere than anyone I can think of in a long, long time. She's Gutenberg big. She pulled a Copernicus in the field of Children's Entertainment.

I am in love with JK Rowling.

I'd stick it in.

But yeah, I am quite pleased that kids are reading again.

Harry Potter seems like something she'd dream up after being knocked into a fantasy world by a donkey punch. If you want children to read, tell them not to.

I wonder if that would work?

It worked with every other damn thing.

Again, Alex proves wiser than his years.

It's funny how I either always say something wise or unimaginably stupid, I'm glad I was able to combine the two there.

It was pretty good compared to the others, but slightly dissapointing end-wise. I mean, Dumbledore sits him down to tell him "everything" at the end. This "everything" is not too surprising, to tell you the truth.

But, Knox, it's not like Rowling beats you over the head with her (rather thick) book and tells you to read it. Granted, the publicity fpr the original was rather minimal. So it's not as if you're forced to read them. So please, stop complaining about them.

i'll stop complaining once people stop praising.

fuck im so ashamed ie ven know this, but i do have a basic idea of most of the characters and story line (id like to thank the fuck ups in my classes who just love these goddamn books so much for that one) so whats this "everythign" you speak of?
(and dont be an ass by not telling me ok, im not gonna read the books anyways and your lucky i have this small interest enough as it is)

My friend downloaded a fake copy of the book where hermione dies at the end, someone has to be pretty fucking pathetic to write their own 800 page novel just for the hell of screwing with some harry potter fans

I did hear that someone "important" dies in the book.

I doubt I'll read it, I don't have the patience. That last one was so overwritten and easily the first 1/3 of the book could have been cut with little to no impact to the plot.

Can we say "minimalism" anyone...?

But at least they're reading, as someone else above said. Anything that gets people reading is a good thing.

Spoilers here for all you who don't want to know what happens.

Dumbledore tells Harry that the Divination teacher made a prophecy 16 years before, that the end of that July (16 years before, also the day Harry was, obviously, born), a wizard would be born to wizards who defeated Voldemort 3 (or "thrice" as she says it so "properly") times, and would be powerfuly enough to defeat Voldemort. He would mark the child as his equal (the scar), and would be powerful enough to defeat him. In the end, one of them will have to die, both cannot be alive at the same time, and one will die in the hands of the other.

That's it. Really.

Now, I'm hoping its Harry, because that would be so surprising for all the kids. I mean, it's going to happen in the last book, so, she really should do it.

Plus, that same Divination teacher (who ends up being a fake so wtf is up with this true prophecy) always tells Harry that he is going to die young and painfully or something.

Oh yeah, and Sirius Black, Harry's godfather, dies at the hands of his own cousin, who is a servant to the "Dark Lord."

END OF Spoilers.

Yeah, so that's it.

Thanks Leonard, Smile
Now I *really* don't need to read the thing.

Spoilers...

The prophecy is that the child will be born to wizards who have DEFIED the Dark Lord thrice, not DEFEATED him. This is why Harry's such a big deal, no one has defeated him yet because no one can except Harry.

And the deal with the true prophecy from the fraud teacher Trelawney is that she is the granddaughter of one of the greatest seers ever, and every once in a while (I think she does so twice in the fourth book) she goes all trancey and makes a true prophecy of which I don't even think she's aware.

Sorry for the outburst. It's just the way the thread sounded so arrogant, it pissed me off a little.

Fuck you Pooka. I was just at a lost for a title, and needed to start a Harry Potter thread. So fuck off if you don't like it. It's not like I force you to read it kiddo.

It's cool reading Harry Potter? Shit man, I've been wasting myself on copies of Busty Beryl’s bollock bonanza then for no apparent reason?

I've got about an hour to go Leonard, and then I'm out of your hair for good. Incidentally, don't get out of your pram about people responding to a thread you started, regardless of what they say or want to put across. Yes, it was a little flippant of me, but what the hey! If you start a thread, you take everything that comes with that thread. That means people agreeing and disagreeing. It may even mean people having their own opinions (God forbid), or interjecting remarks that hold no relevance to the thread. So what! I've set up threads where people talk all kinds of shit; most don't even talk about the subject of the thread, they just talk, simple as that. It pisses me off when they do it, but I don't just insult them personally (I leave it till threads start up like PET FUCKIN PEEVES).
So, next time you get all defensive about your thread, remember; it's an open house buddy, and eveyones invited!
