Lyrics have the potential to be important, but they're not the MOST important part of the song. If lyrics make the entire song, then you're pretty much taking the value away from all classical music/music without lyrics.

I read an interview with the singer of a certain band which I used to like, in which he said "Writing the songs was easy. Once I heard the music the words just flowed." (those aren't the exact words but it was to that effect).

What I'm getting at is that music by itself can convey a feeling or an emotion far better than ANY word can.
