Greatest Hits Albums You Don’t Own But Probably Should...
Appetite for Destruction is the Guns N Roses greatest hits album.
you're not wrong, Kit. as much as i love gunners, i still stand by my comments that Illusions should have been one album. there's so much mediocre shit on those albums. i once burnt a greatest hits of the two and it was a much better album.
I was gonna jump in yesterday and do the Appetite thing, but figured someone else would get on it. I was not disappointed.
You only need one GNR album and that album is Appetite For Destruction.
Now, shall we discuss exactly why a Metallica's Greatest Hits is unpossible?
This is why we can't have nice things.
Thank you. I wanted to say this so badly, but my avatar is just not cool enough to get away with saying it with a straight face.
Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
You guys are old.
Newer bands don't (and really shouldn't) have best-ofs.

just so everyone knows I have an original LP of Appetite of vinyl, original cover art of course, and there's only around 30k (I think) of them worldwide.
They should just re-release it with a bonus track of their Sympathy for the Devil cover.

and the You Could Be Mine video as a dvd bonus
Chinese Democracy was pretty good...
Oh fuck you.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Some of the guitar work on Chinese Democracy was kind of cool but beyond that, it pretty much just made me mad.
what he said.
what he said.
Thirded.

I hate Chinese Democracy, I had a bet that the Chinese would have democracy before that album would come out.
Never actually listened to any of the music from it though.

It's not terrible. It's obviously not Guns n Roses but it's not terrible. Never really understood the big deal about Guns n Roses anyway... couple tracks fair enough but, i dunno, not my kinda rock. I like Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath and Deep Purple n shit. Guns n Roses in their hey-day were never that far removed from Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams as far as i'm concerned. Just not my cup of tea.
Leave immediately.
You've obviously never listened, not properly anyway, to gunners. I mean, come on--Bon fucking jovi! You can't be serious? Listen to the ferocity of axl's voice on Out Ta Get Me and then listen to the wimpy shit that dribbles out of Jon's face and then tell me they're one in their same. Gunners basically breathed life into rock n roll when the spirit of it was slowly fading along with all the Hollywood pop bands tauting themseles as rock stars in the 80s they lived the sex, drugs and rock n roll more than anyone and they sang about it. I honestly don't understand how someone that says they like hard rock from the 70s can not get gunners.
Ohh. This fucking guy.
The fact that Nirvana made bands like GnR obsolete pretty much overnight is not a sign of greatness for the latter.

Just because a trend makes everything else seem obsolete doesn't mean it actually is obsolete. Now, Nirvana et al. were good, but it was a musical trend that turned onto a pop culture sensation. I hardly think that makes Guns n Roses obsolete.

Never said they're one and the same, i said they're not far removed. And Guns n Roses have absolutely fuck-all on 70s rock. It's the same with Metalica. 70s rock like Zepplin and Sabbath is timeless, whereas for the thirty years or whatever bands like Guns n Roses and Metalica have been round, their music has dated terribly. The one GnR song i truly love is Civil War, and i still like Sweet Child O' Mine though no one else i mention it to seems to. I've tried listening to their other stuff "properly" many times and the result is always the same. I hit stop and get the Led out.
I can't stand zepplin. Never could. I realize the makes me some kind of subnormal chimpbeast, but I'm okay with that.
This is why we can't have nice things.
It's all good, i'm ok with myself not diggin GnR.
I feel the same way. Although, Stairway to Heaven's a classic.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Stairway to Heaven is probably one of the most overrated songs of all time, and I say that as a LZ fan. The song is just plain boring until the drums kick in, well toward the end of the track. Any time I hear it I really wonder how it ever became a hit.
Also, I sincerely hate the phrase 'get the Led out'.
Well, it certainly made them obsolete in terms of MTV, but it's interesting to note that the hard rock/heavy metal genre is still going strong even now, whereas grunge has pretty much disappeared or been diluted into other genres.
A lot of grunge music, especially the bandwagon type groups that really weren't as talented as the likes of Nirvana sounds just as dated as G'n'R does today. I'm not using 'dated' as a knock on the music in either case, but both genres are definitely reminiscent of a particular place and time in music, and always will be. That's just the way it is.
Also, I sincerely hate the phrase 'get the Led out'.
First time i've ever used the phrase 'get the Led out'. I feel fucking ashamed of myself.

I feel the same way, I find the Apocalyptica cover version superior in almost every way. But than again I believe that every song should have a string arrangement.

I'd kick Bon Jovi in the nuts if 1) I ever saw him and 2) I thought he had some to begin with. And Bryan Adams isn't even on the rock and roll radar, as far as I'm concerned.

On this, I totally get what you mean , but to a point. From a guitarist's perspective (and I'm not assuming you don't play, either) I enjoy the song because it's one of the first ones you learn. Then you learn to hate it, because it's the one song you're likely to hear upon walking into any guitar shop anywhere. I think that's what makes it meaningful to a lot of guys. It's one of those standards, but it's not actually much to listen to until it actually has a beat, like you said, "wel toward the end of the track."
As far as becoming a hit... no idea. I'd take Whole Lotta Love or When the Levee Breaks over that one any day.

+1
Also, I fully understand what you're saying about Stairway. I just wish it didn't take so long to build.
Your post also reminded me of Wayne's World. "No Stairway.. denied!"
Yeah, I usually lose interest and skip it altogether, on the album or the greatest hits. Except on How The West Was Won. I rarely listen to that one, but in context of the whole live concert, it seems right.

I've been listening to Dylan's and The Band's "Basement Tapes" a lot lately and realized I've never checked out "The Band" more than "Music from the Big Pink." Is their catalog worth checking out or will a greatest hits due?
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
The Band is great ! Get your hands on The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese's film of their last concert. I don't know if there is a satisfying greatest hit CD out though.

I def will check it out
Thank you for the suggestion! I love the Dylan and Stones documentary he did. I heard he's doing one on George Harrison next year.

Slightly off topic... but everyone needs to check out Gillian Welch and Old Crow Medicine's cover of my favorite Band song: The Weight.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
Really enjoyed that, lovely song
Gillian is truly a gem! I actually got to see Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch at Bonnaroo this year....AMAZING! Been meaning to buy some of Gillian's albums. The Dave Rawlings Machine album is wonderful, also dig all the stuff he's done with Ryan Adams.

For Zep, I know someone mentioned Mothership, but I don't have it, if I need a good fix, I like the double cd Remasters. But really, Led Zeppelin are best listened to album by album, just like The Band.
And for LZ, listen to them on vinyl at some point in your life. It's worth it.

I have their first four on vinyl. anything from the 70s and prior should really be listened to on vinyl. Dylan's original mono recordings are far superior in quality and it's true to what it was meant to sound like.
it was me, and I definitely prefer listening to the albums as is, on vinyl, but I can't take a record player with me in the car, ya dig?
I got 1, 2, 3, 4 and Physical Graffiti on c.d. and 1, 2, 4 and The Song Remains The Same on vinyl. obviously i'm not much of a seasoned collector but i have to admit, like alot of stuff, Led Zepplin just sounds so much cooler on vinyl. Some things were made for vinyl.
The Best Of Kool and the Gang 1969-1976
Funky.
I picked up a copy of In Through The Out Door at a record fair a few months ago, near mint condition, in the paper bag and everything. It's awesome.
I really should get more Zepplin, i only got the ones i mentioned before and Mothership. The Song Remains The Same is a brilliant live album but i tried watchin the film and it just didn't seem the same. Sure they're different recordings. Gotta get more... i'm running into the night to find them as i type this, only not really. Bit pissed (drunk) and stoned (high as a... as a... hairyplane).

yeah, i dig. Also, this thread made me like you at least a thousand times more, and i already really thought you were cooler than ice cold.

man, i fucking love Gunners. that's a pretty decent greatest hits, but i'd more than likely just turn someone onto Appetite.
did i mention Red, White & Crue, Motley Crue's greatest hits?
