Gospel-Type Music That Isn't All "Jesus-y"...
In another thread that asked to be kept OT, discussion turned, naturally, to "gospel type music that wasn't all 'Jesus-y'", and Mirka suggested Sweet Honey In The Rock with whom I'm not familiar at all. I'll be checking them out, stat, because I think I could totally dig that.
Are there other groups or artists that could be suggested? I'm always looking for religious-sounding musics that aren't necessarily religious in nature. That weird cult-y Up With People group from a few years ago was an example - whatever their name was. The kids with the robes and vacant smiles.
Doesn't strictly even have to be "gospel"-sounding as such.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Besides Sweet Honey in the Rock (And they so fit the bill, using gospel type music to sing about all kinds of things) I'd suggest The Staple Singers.
oh, and thank you for this thread! I look forward to more suggestions because I love this kind of music and Jesus does get tiresome.
The Staple Singers, of course.
So very siggable. What would John S say?
This is why we can't have nice things.
Greystone Chapel (Johnny Cash). It's on his famous Live at Folsom Prison album.

The only version of Ray Charles playing Lucky Old Sun (his studio version is incredible). There's quite an atheist feel to that song actually. And Ray Charles, like Louis Armstrong, could sing gospel stuff without being preachy.

Oh, man, the Staples singers. Damn. Obviously, Mavis Staples' solo stuff.
The Black Crowes have some Gospel inspired stuff.
The Band?
Blind Boys of Alabama. Do it.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
Yes, they are good.

Ah, yeah! They're playing Bluesfest next month too. Cavy wait to see them. Great few days.
I'm actually in the middle of making a playlist around exactly what you're talking about. I'll upload it when I'm done.

The very reason why I love Ray Charles so much.
I'm thinking of that Al Green song, "take me to the river", which you probably know of. Big fan of the Talking Heads version. Also Peter Gabriel did a very interesting version mixing it together with "Steam".
Also the band your thinking of is perhaps the Polyphonic Spree?
"...human speech is like a cracked tin kettle, on which we hammer out tunes to make bears dance when we long to move the stars."
Hell yeah, Al Green! Have you heard 'Love Ritual'? It's so badass. 'Love and Happiness' is probably my favorite song ever.

Oh, man, I forgot all about John S. Good times.

Absolutely. Aretha Franklin also does a great version of Lucky Old Sun and is great gospel singer without the preachy bit.
Blind Willie Johnson
Reverend Gary Davis
Sufjan Stephens
Pedro the Lion
Robert Johnson
The innocence mission
shapenote singing. here is a good example:
i like the minor/modal harmony
IDUMEA
And am I born to die?
To lay this body down
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown?
A land of deepest shade,
Unpierced by human thought
The dreary regions of the dead,
Where all things are forgot.
Soon as from earth I go
What will become of me?
Eternal happiness or woe,
Must then my portion be
Waked by the trumpet sound,
I from my grave shall rise;
And see the Judge with glory crowned,
And see the flaming skies
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
Have not heard 'live ritual' will have to look into it. 'love and happiness' is a great one, but then so much of his stuff is.

Otis Redding?
This one is quite special.

Lofi, great selection as always.

Not too shabby either.

Yeah, those nuts. Fun.
Great suggestions, people. Keep 'em coming!

The late John Hartford has some fun ones. Especially "Turn Your Radio On." That tune could make any atheist feel like getting right with Jesus.
big dismal is a pretty good band, and they are christian/religious rock, and they dont mention god. the first 12 stones album doesnt either, but they arent for everyone.

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”

This comp isn't exactly non-Jesus-y, but it is pretty good..

Lemme know if you want it and I can upload.
I would give it a listen!
This is why we can't have nice things.
You'll see, I don't give no shit about your "Non Jesus-y" rule! Take that, you dirty sinner!

"The Truth Will Set You Free" by the Mighty Clouds of Joy.
Love that song.
