Favorite disturbing movies?
What are some screwed up movies that you love to hate, hate to love, or (for the sick bastards out there) love to love?
My top 5:
5. Julian Donkey Boy
4. Fresh
3. Happiness
2. Enter The Void
1. Blue Velvet
Martyrs. Easily the most disturbing film I've ever seen.

That's exactly what I was going to put.
We have one of these threads every 6 months or so.
- Cannibal Holocaust
- Ichi the Killer
- Audition
- That Human Centipede movie was terrible (IMO) but I guess it was pretty disturbing.
I'm drawing a blank...
Black swan
Requiem for a dream
Happiness
Visitor Q. (i never made it through this one, but it is worth mentioning)
Precious
Those come immediately to mind, I'm sure I will think of more.
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."
-LaJessica
Antichrist
Si vis pacem, para bellum
The last film to genuinely disturb me was The Human Centipede. Definitely not one to watch with your Grandmother.
For a second I thought that was Tom C. And I got a little excited.
I miss Tom.

Mary Poppins.
Anything Hallmark.
Fireproof featuring Kirk Cameron. (Actually, that one was funny -I take that back).

Oh, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Most of mine were already mentioned:
Enter the Void - Parts are interesting, parts are disturbing, parts are boring.
Audition - I think I actually like this movie, but I'll have to watch it again. It was certainly the best of Miike's films I've seen.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man - Kind of like if David Lynch made a japanese cyber-punk movie.
Ichi the Killer - was kind of disturbing, but I think tried so hard to be visually grotesque, it loses any real impact.
Lies (2000 - Korean) - I think the only mildly disturbing aspect was amplified because I was watching it with my sister.
Visitor Q - WTF?
I've also been told I need to watch Alejandro Jodorowsky... The Holy Mountain in particular, though I think he's more just weird than disturbing.
"...human speech is like a cracked tin kettle, on which we hammer out tunes to make bears dance when we long to move the stars."
Ha, someone else has heard of Visitor Q. I have only known one other person that knew it.

Has anyone seen Serbian Film, BTW?
Martyrs and Human Centipede were disturbing but Salo actually fucked with my head.
Jesus Camp.

Let the Right One In is pretty fucked up. But the book is way more disturbing because it gives everything context.
The Children, one of the best creepy children movie.
The international cut of Leon has all the scenes of twelve year old Natalie Portman hitting on Jean Reno which speaks for itself.
Oldboy, but everything Park Chan-wook does is pretty disturbing.
A Clockwork Orange, I'm surprised no one said this yet.
Pans Labyrinth, really any movie with violence against, done to/by children is disturbing.
Running Scared, continuing with the violence and children.
"The rat inside your brain rules the world."
Citizen Kane SUCKED!!!!!!! True fact.
Alcoholism is the cure not the disease.
I will probably never watch Precious because I already know it would break my heart and I can't stand watching/reading/thinking about anything related to child abuse.
From IMDB:
"An aging porn star agrees to participate in an "art film" in order to make a clean break from the business, only to discover that he has been drafted into making a pedophilia and necrophilia themed snuff film."
You may want to skip this one too.
Clockwork is disturbing, yeah, but I was never a fan of the film.

A Clockwork Orange, I'm surprised no one said this yet.
I was going to say this and my favorite part has to be one of the most disturbing scenes when he's singing "Singing in the Rain" as he beats the couple and ends up raping the wife. I get some sort of weird sick pleasure from watching that scene.
( Mind you it doesn't turn me on I just love how it shows how heartless people can be that they would do something so despicable all while singing a cheery tune)
Running Scared, continuing with the violence and children.
I really loved this movie and yes many of the shit that happens in this movie is pretty damn disturbing.
HAUNTING!!!

It's scary now because they're both dead.

No way. billy crystal died?

Anyone?
This is why we can't have nice things.
Anyone?
I should watch that tonight. Also my friends hate Bambi because of the whole
"Mother? Mother!?"

Eh, yeah, I'll pass.
No way. billy crystal died?
Didn't he?

No, we just wish he did.

I have no desire to see it either. Same with Cannibal Holocaust and Pink Flamingos.

Man, I'm there with you. I read the wiki entry for Cannibal Holocaust and just...no. I'm all for quality film, and I don't shy away from the disturbing, but I've got my boundaries. I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything, either.
Disturbing, to me, is stuff like Requiem for a Dream, Repulsion (favorite Polanski film, other than Rosemary's Baby), A Clockwork Orange, Funny Games (the original), etc.

Agreed. I would also add the films of Gasper Noe and Todd Solondz to that list. I like how those guys use disturbing imagery in a way that criticizes the very things they are showing. Movies like CH are just fucking filth, though.
BTW, I notice that you only gave props to the original Funny Games. Did you dislike the remake?
Funny Games is great.
Pink Flamingos is beyond disturbing. I've sat through most of it and even watched the infamous dog shit scene...Definitely not worth watching unless you're into the whole unscripted hap hazard/performance art and shock value type films.
I'm just not that into camp, no matter how dark.
I think the one reason that I didn't enjoy the remake of Funny Games as much is because I saw it the same weekend I just happened to watch two other movies with Naomi Watts, and I suppose it was a bit of...overkill. Honestly, that's a lame excuse not to like it as much as the original, and I'm sure I'll watch it again (love Haneke, but his films can be hard to watch...Benny's Video...yikes). It's not that I didn't like it, I just didn't like it as much. There was something about watching the original, with actors I didn't know, speaking in a language I didn't understand, that made it that much more disturbing for some reason.
The funny games remake is okay, but it didn't trump the original like the Psycho remake.
Pink Flamingos is too ridiculous to be disturbing.
A Serbian Film was so over the top it felt more silly than disturbing.
I know it's supposed to be a metaphore of Serbian history etc. etc.
But it sure is the most gruesome acts that I've ever seen in a movie - but again, I don't think it hits it mark and I wouldn't recommend it. At least "Human Centepede" had some sort of "horror-movie" entertainment value which "A Serbian Film" completely lacked imo.

You can't spell manslaughter without laughter.
i was just talking to people about ANTICHRIST. its got dafoe in it, in case there's more than one.
disturbing as fuck

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
I own it. Of Miike's films that I own though, it's the only one that I've only watched once. I was half asleep and didn't understand anything. I guess I'll have to give it another go sometime soon.
The first time I watched that - my jaw hung open in disbelief for the whole movie. My gf (at the time) and I were going, "No way..." and "What an asshole..." the whole time. I'll have to agree with you on that one.
I have to add Senseless to my list. I just watched it last night and it's competing with Martyrs for disturbing factor. And the story was pretty good too.
http://www.amazon.com/Senseless-Jason-Behr/dp/B002HMTX84/ref=sr_1_4?ie=U...
In one of the most shocking reality shows ever seen: Eliott Gast (Jason Behr), an American economist, is kidnapped by a group of anti-globalisation radicals; his capture is broadcast day after day on television and the only way he can be freed is through the viewers donations. Eliott starts to torture himself to try and understand the reason for his kidnapping, digging deep into all the sins he may have committed, while the audience watches him indulgently from their homes. Senseless delves into the mechanisms of the capitalist system and does so with the punch and tension characteristic of a thriller.
Wait, he literally starts to torture himself? or do they just mean mentally?
No - the description sucks.
Basically, he's kidnapped and placed into a room. A few days later they come in a tell him that it's being streamed on the internet because of his sins. A few days later they come in and explain that seems he handles other countries like they can't feel, they will teach him what it's like not to feel. (Or some such speech). They then take an iron to his tongue.
The movie continues along this way. (Without me given away any important plot points - this is the best I can do.)
Ah, right. Thanks. Considering there is an eye in a spoon on the cover of that dvd you linked, I'm not sure you need say much more
And the name of it being Senseless. lol
It was pretty good though. I liked it.
Once were warriors - a very well written but disturbing film about domestic abuse which i highly recommend.
Practically anything by David Lynch. Though 'Blue Velvet' is a bit too crazy and 'Mulholland Drive' difficult to comprehend at times, but Lynch's Lost Highway is about perfect.

I liked Blue Velvet...I was actually thinking about that movie today. I need to rewatch it.
I did like it too, i just remember watching it in the wrong comapny once. It went down very badly and i received some weird looks for suggesting it. Heh, from memory there is some fucking weird scenes in it.
Speaking of Lynch, Twin Peaks is almost my all time favourite tv series. It's not overly disturbing, though it certainly can be at times.

So do I! I love that movie.
I've had Lost Highway at my house for a while and I just can't get into it. I really want to though because I loved Twin Peaks (movie and show), Mulholland Drive, and Blue Velvet. But I've hated other things he's done. So I guess he's hit or miss for me.
No Pete, you must try again some time - it's so good!!!
I do admit you have to be in the right mood though.
Bill Pullman isn't the greatest of actors, but it's all still so emotive. I love the way Lynch uses sound in this film!

Gummo was worlds better than Donkey Boy and way more twisted i thought.
Anyway: Old Boy, Tarnation, Storytelling, Black Swan, Boogie Nights, there's more i'm sure.
