elliot smith
with his lyrics he seemed to be a shoe in for the next drake and by killing himself he seems to be just that. he died yesterday by stabbing himself, how the fuck do u stab yourself. but some of his music was damn good, and im sure anybody who has seen royal tenenbaums remembers needle in the hay from richie's suicide, kinda ironic.
he stabbed himself to death?
Commited suicide Tuesday. Goddamn shame.
Great artist, he will be missed.

People don't stab themselves to death these days. It just hardly ever happens. That's how Shakespearian characters and samurai knights committed suicide.
ah maybe some metaphor for heartbroken, he stabbed himself in the chest i read. who know the dude was a heroin addict, alchoholic, but his music was pretty good.
god, that's depressing. just, depressing. and what a terrible way to go!
Actually that was my preferred theoretical method of suicide when I was younger.
It's not easy having a good time.
Even smiling makes my face ache.
Well yeah, of course all kids want to commit Hari Kari...
He wrote the Needle in the Hay song... what else did he write? Was he on the American Beauty soundtrack? And wow, that does suck a lot. Brave guy- stabbing himself.
-Anesthetized
he was on the good will hunting soundtrack to, nominated for an academy award for it
awesome singer by far my favorite "mellow" artist. what a fucking shame, does anyone have a link to a news report on it?
never heard his stuff but he sounds like a hardcore individual, the knife in the heart thing is nuts
download Needle In The Hay
Fuck so its true....man this makes me sad.....any news on ben gibbard did he bite the dust as well?
damn it this guy was the one signer iw as willign to shell out cash for a concert to too
needle in the hay is pretty decent
Fuck! He was just here for a free show and I figured I would just catch him next time, so I didn't go. Damn. Double damn. Everyone told me that I missed a great show and that he was SO fucked up on h. that he could hardly get through the set. And I missed it.
well, that sucks

Yeah, but you would think the dude would have enough courtesy to wait until I felt like going to see him in concert.
sounds like a layne staley

i think time would be best spent talking about his music, and shows that we've seen, and experiences had through what he's given us...
NOT being pissed because we missed a show and now he's dead, or talking about how "ballsy" it was to knife himself.
Clearly, by using his music as a guide, we can see that he was highly depressed, addicted to alcohol and drugs, and suicidal throughout his life/career. still, i don't think any of his fans "saw this coming". his music has helped many other depressed and dependant people beat their struggles, and i'm sure we all hoped that it would do the same for him. as the pitchfork story states, it only seemed like he could fully communicate through his music. the music world has lost someone great today. i hope we can all respect that a little bit more.
i never knew he was depressed and addicted tod rugs and alcohol.
man music really has lost one of the only things it had going for it

I would apologize, but as I didn't know the chap, and in fact his value to me was his music, I really don't feel like I should be draped in black and sending flowers. People die every second. What makes you feel like you have any more of a connection to him than you do to the guy that just died of cancer in the local hospital. If that doesn't work for you, try this: some of us just deal with our pain with humor. Let us have our defense.
you just made it clear that you dont feel anything about what happened, therefore your "humor" is not being used as a coping mechanism...you're just trying to look cool and funny on the message board...if that's your thing...fine...whatever.
and go back and read my post and try to figure out why i feel like its okay for me to mourn him more than joe shmoe who died of cancer yesterday. i dont think its that hard to figure out.
only here would we make death into an argument
A "funny" argument.
Slate has a nice article up about his last, now incomplete album, and about how he had been disentegrating for the past few months: missing shows and feigning illness, etc. This is very sad.

You misunderstand. This is all humor, because quite frankly, I don't give a rats ass that he is dead or that any millions of other people are, either, and I am quite sure that it doesn't impress anyone. Luckily, that is not why I am here. You seem to feel that I should respect him because he was depressed and made music about it and then killed himself. Right? I am sorry, but it takes much more than that to earn my respect. And it is pretty damn hard for someone that I have never met to do it. Like I said, all I know about the guy is his music, and that is still around. If that is taken away, I will mourn that. You have no more of a connection to him than you do to Joe at the hospital, you just try to convince yourself that you do. If you want to go on pretending that you respect the dude and want to sit humbly with your hands folded, do that. But for crying out loud, don't expect all of us to join your pious little parade.

Its so sad to hear about this...
I personally loved his music, he was my favourite. He was so poetic, and you had to know that he was to kill himself thats the way he would do it....to really make an emotional standpoint and be so prosaic
He was so talented and his career was really beginning to rise...so sad
Human kind cannot bear too much reality...
You are the music while the music lasts- T.S Elliot

oh cool, ill need to check him out
