Do you like Scary Movies?
Well, do you?
I don't. I don't like them at all. My being scared limit is psychological thriller type things like Black Swan or What Lies Beneath. And even Black Swan left me feeling a little freaked. I don't like that feeling. Jumping out of my seat at the movies, and having to cover up my eyes is not something I want to do. I don't get how other people do like it.
Bloke watched Paranormal Activity when I was away once and it scared the pants off him, he had to have the bedside lamp on to sleep while I was away. My old flatmate freaked out after watching The Ring and wouldn't answer the buzzer to the apartment for a few days.
Have you ever had a scary movie seriously freak you out for days after?
If you do like scary/horror/phychothriller movies...why?
Someone please explain to me why they like having their pants scared off.
Never been on one.
I've always though people like scary movies for the same reason they like roller coasters. The adrenaline rush that comes from being scared. I think. I could definitely be wrong since I happen to hate scary movies and love roller coasters and other thrill seeking activities. But for me it's because scary movies ruin my mood for days. Whenever I'm reminded of them, I feel creeped out. Whereas roller coasters are just thrilling for me and when I remember the scariest parts, I just want to do them again.
That's what I mean. I know people who like scary movies even though they feel horrible and freaked out for days after. I just don't get that.
What's the scariest film you guys have ever seen?
I love scary movies...I personally like them because It's hard for me to get scared or experience fear (If you're ok with death what else is left?)so I guess I watch them for two reasons-
1)I have always loved halloween and scary things monsters ghost the bizzare and unexplained because I'm very curious about it and it brings me happiness for some reason I guess like the way The Misfits felt about it. The look of horror is appealing in a artistic way. I used to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas all the time when i was 4 especially on Christmas along with The Thing and House On Haunted Hill.I also think the stories Horror envokes are extremly entertaining like Poe.
2) Because I can't get scared I'm like a drug addict searching for the fear.
one of my favorites was The Shining. Because (SPOILER)-the part when Jack Nicholson goes to check the hotel room his son said an old woman who tried to strangle him was in (Jack and his family are watching an empty hotel inthe moutains snowed in basically)he finds a nude woman in the tub. He starts making out with her then looks in the mirror and she turns all old with like burned skin and starts laughing at him coming at him slowly laughing like a witch while he backs away.
That scene stuck withme for a long time and still does to some degree. I guess I could say witches or really crazy old women frighten me.
We're consumers. We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra.
Narrator: Martha Stewart.
Tyler Durden: Fuck Martha Stewart. Martha's polishing the brass on the Titanic. It's all going down, man. So fuck off with your sofa units and Strinne green stripe patterns. I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let... lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.
I hate rollercoasters because of my acrophobia. If they made ones that were flat but went real fast, I'd be all over that. But I love having a real good nightmare.
This is why we can't have nice things.
we should meet up at bush gardens or some palce and ride every coaster, most people scared of them have never done it before. I promise once you do it you'll want to ride it 3 more times to be satisfied. Skydiving is really scary the first time and I gotta say I'm not in a hurry to do it again but I would if I didn't have to pay. It's a real rush.
also the flat coasters they should make, for speed demons...
call up Disney and ask them to let you join thier cult, because you have a money making idea there sir...

Yeah. I used to think that.
This is Colossus in Valencia, California. At the time it held a number of world-records. It is a dual track wooden coaster and, then, the largest, fastest, and plummetiest of its kind.

I rode this to force myself to get over it. Immersion therapy.
Golly, was I ever-so wrong.
I don't do planes. Fear of heights includes fear of being really, really high, too.

I like scary movies a lot, but I prefer the older style horror movies to the torture-porn stuff they're making these days. The Saw movies really aren't my cup of tea, past the first one. Classic 70s and 80s horror films are the best, especially the Italian ones. Give me a good Giallo any day.

Opera by Dario Argento was good, and couldn't agree with you more.

Tenebre is my favourite of his, but there's a lot more to Giallo than Argento. Mario Bava, for starters.
When I was younger(10-12) I went through a scary movie binge, watching all the classics like Rosemary's Baby and the Shining. Then there was a point in my life I couldn't/wouldn't watch scary movies because of mild PTSD, without scary movies I was having series of nightmares and paranoia, it was awful. I recently got back to a state where I want to watch scary movies again though. I really enjoyed The Strangers which was one of the first scary movies I watched since my previous binge.
I don't at all. At all. I'm about to hyperventilate thinking about the horrible things I've seen in the name of entertainment.
The strange thing is that I really love the film 'Funny Games" because it validates everything I hate about the scary movie genre.
No scary movies, no roller coasters.
scary movies please!
but only well-crafted psychological terror.
gore is cheap, food for the lowest common denominator.
i am not the lcd.

I'm not a fan of gore/slasher movies but I enjoy watching them for a good laugh. I love watching the poor sap standing there taking forever to run away from the monster who moves slower than a slug. Psychological terror movies are definitely preferred.
I still won't watch the Exorcist knowing the behind the scenes story and having seen some of the more awful scenes, I don't think I could sit through the whole thing with all that anticipation.
I can't think of any of my favorite scary movies since it's been a while since I've watched any of the good ones...
Oh the Haunting. The classic black and white one.
I don't think I ever cuddled during a scary movie.

Well, then, seems we've got our plans sorted for my eventual trip through LA.
I don't really like the Saw movies or any of the gore junk. I love "old" scary movies and I like cheesy ones just as much.

I used to like scary movies, but now the lameness bothers me and I rarely think they're good.
I really like The Others though! Saw Alecia mentioned that movie and I totally forgot about that one.

I saw The Shining when I was five or six and the bathroom scene Jim7 referenced made me kinda creeped out by bathtubs for a while. I think it built up an immunity though. I feel like I can watch anything fictional now and not really care.
This doesn't mean that I enjoy most horror films. There should be something beyond the shock value.

QFT - Although The Decent is one of the scarier films I've seen. Session 9 is really good, too. Think Chuck likes it too.
You look like the type of guy / gal, who would like:
I love The Faculty. Really underrated.
Every time I read this thread title I want to say...
"...Your mother sure didn't."

Overrated, actually, but I still love it to the point of cult following fanaticism.

I have it on DVD and I watch it every few months.
Me too. I love that movie. You also mentioned a few others I really like.
I also like
Carrie
Signs
Sixth Sense
The Amityville Horror
Alien
Ugh I can only think of stinking M. Night Shamalan movies right now.
This thread is pretty much awesome. Too bad I have nothing to contribute right now even though I love horror movies.
I'm gonna try and think up some that haven't been named and come back to this.
Carry on.

I was so excited to respond to this thread I didn't read most of the other replies. after I submit this, I will go through and read everyone's posts!
I love horror. It is one of my favorite things ever. The rush of fear and suspense, the tingly feeling of goosebumps and your hair on end, it's so great. That being said, I am truly a purist on my horror, suspense, and thriller choices. I don't watch shitty blockbuster slasher/horrors. That is not true horror, and it is not a testament to the craft.
My best friend is studying film and has really been the driving force in my love for scary films. Some of my favorites are Inside, Martyrs (also my favorite movie), The Descent, The Shining, Ring (the Japanese version), Freaks... The Birds (god, the things I've read about alfred hitchcock wearing down mentally/scaring the shit out of his main actress to get her to show real emotion is crazy).
I love horror because it is a medium that makes you vulnerable, uneasy, and terrified and you always want more.
this is in no way criticizing campy horror/gore by the way, that is an entirely different ballpark and awesome in a different way. hostel, braindead, and drag me to hell are good examples of that.
“if you want to be a bird,” you said once, “with colorful plumage and buoyant trills, you must also be ready for hollow bones."
How could I fucking forget Psycho with Anthony Perkins? That's probably my favorite scary movie of all time. Although it is more psychological thriller or what have you. But it's was one of my first scary movies and I think having been to Universal seeing where they filmed part of it adds a lot to that.
Martyrs is one of my favorite horror movies too. I can't believe I forgot about that one.
Also Hitchcock is pretty much my favorite director. I've watched almost everything he's made (besides the TV stuff). I have these two really cool collections.
Psycho IS my favorite horror movie.
Haha, can't believe I forgot about Martyrs as well. I watched that again just the other day.
I have to say I'm into the gore and I very much enjoy movies like Saw. The gore is something that causes a reaction in me, and I like that.
OH!
[Rec]. I really enjoyed watching that movie. The ending's supercreepy and it's one of the only movies that has ever seriously scared me.
Is [Rec] the one where they're trapped in the building?
Yeah.
I'm talking about the Spanish movie by the way. Haven't seen the remake, but I don't expect it to be better.
Oh, I didn't know there was a Spanish movie. I've seen the American version. I thought the premise was really cool. But the acting sort of sucked. It had that girl from Dexter (his sister) in it.
I'll have to check out the Spanish version. Maybe I'll like it more.
And I just looked it up. I was thinking of the movie Quarantine. Which has the same description of the Spanish movie. So I'm guessing that that is the American remake. Weird that I thought of the right movie even though the one I knew of had a different title...
Hah, yeah, that's kinda strange.
But you should definitely watch the Spanish one, it must be better.
Yeah it is, extremely the same though so I don't know how much that would ruin it for you. Sequel is out too.
You look like the type of guy / gal, who would like:

No it's my favorite movie.
The Universal films. They practically had a lock on it.

-ANDY
i've seen a ton of horror movies
but i would say the hands down scariest is The Grudge
if you live near a cornfield, i would suggest Children of the Corn
-walking past a cornfield at night gets scarier after that.

Do you like roller coasters?
