disturbing
What films would you recommend that are truly disturbing? I don't mean gorey or even necessarily horror. It could be in any genre but it has to leave a strong impression. If you want to explain why it was disturbing to you, that would be interesting as well. Examples of what I'm looking for: Eraserhead, Irreversible, Mysterious Skin, Begotten, Man Bites Dog
Salo was pretty bad.

Oh Jar Jar, every one hates you but me.
The Deer Hunter is one of my favorite films and I found it rather disturbing. The Mist was disturbing, but that may be too mainstream disturbing for some. If you see Salo, no film after that can really be disturbing ever agan. Hmmm...I know there's more, but I guess they didn't leave enough of an impression to pop right into my head.
If it's not consensual, it's not moral. Ever.
i thought the mist was scary until you saw the creatures in the mist. it ruined it for me as did the religious fanatic lady. i dont know, so much of that movie didnt work for me. and the ending, god damn.
when they first showed them in the car when they stop i remember saying, 'i hope he doesnt shoots them and then all of a sudden the mist will disappear and everything will be fine because that will be retarded.' so stupid.
. but the first half hour or so was really good. i didnt find MAN BITES DOG disturbing really. very cool though.
a movie that really disturbed me was ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU CHOU. THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake was pretty fucked up in all the right ways. really enjoyed that movie. done very well. um, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, though youve probably seen it, so dark. those last ten minutes will make you hate your life. a movie i can only watch once a year at most. i cant think of anymore. if youre into drugs, any movie with violence becomes really intense/frightening/disturbing. THE SUITE LIFE OF ZACK AND CODY is pretty fucked up, i think.

god, that music made me laugh. still have no idea what they were thinking.
i feel like the ending couldve been better in a lot of ways. first, that ending probably wouldve worked for me if the hour leading up to it hadnt been so illogical and stupid. i havent read kings story so im not sure if its a good movie transfer, but, shit, so much of that movie bothered me. i felt like every character had forgotten how to think. id go from laughing at them to be frustrated with how stupid they were. i guess by the time the ending happened i just didnt care at all anymore.
i wish the ending was him stepping out of his car and some giant thingy picked him up and ripped him in half. or jesus shows up and the mist goes away when he gives the dude a very fonzie-esque thumbs up. i probably wouldve applauded. but i think all that had to happen for the movie to work for me was to not have the military show up and save the day.

what killed me was all the way up till then the movie was like a masterpiece in building tension without any music. It was very documentary like without going all blair witch on us. but then..... blechh!
Oh Jar Jar, every one hates you but me.
so much wrong with that music. and, yeah, thats what i noticed right away. first piece of music in the film and its fucking that? i dont know who made that decision but they should never be allowed to edit a movie again.
and building tension, did it so well at first. those first twenty minutes seriously really scared me. just, man, it was about as good as a horror movie could start. but, for me, seeing the mist creatures brought me out. it was scarier when they were just an idea and not necessarily interdimensional creatures. you know, that whole JAWS thing wouldve worked wonders for me. but, too, i realize that would have bored the average movie goer to tears. i wish that nothing wouldve happened really. just that intense unknown fear of something being out there. im probably the only person in the world that would be willing to watch people stuck in a grocery store for eighty minutes without them doing anything besides talking and being afraid of mist.
i remember talking about that right after i finished watching it and all of my friends thought it probably wouldve been way too boring for anyone to actually sit through if they did the movie my way. but they obviously didnt realize how right i always am. i mean, i know things.

Irreversible was by far the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. Monster was fairly disturbing in that I really felt empathy for a serial-killer. Cries and Whispers was very disturbing too: a woman cuts up her own cooch with a piece of broken glass. Cries and Whispers is very much a classic, though, whereas I can't say that of the other two. Actually, I think Ingmar Bergman is the master of disturbing movies, because Sarabande was really disturbing too. I have to admit, Blair Witch scared the shit out of me. I couldn't go out into the woods for two weeks after I saw that movie.
Salo was pretty bad.

I second, or third, or forth, or whatever, "Salo". Whacked out. "Oldboy" isn't so much disturbing in the first 90% as it is in the last 10%. Just about any Takashi Miike film is pretty fucked("Audition").
I suppose you've seen "Blue Velvet". Although I think that film is garbage personally. Maybe I need to watch it again.
"Un Chien Andalou" which really isn't a film so much as a 16 minute short filled with Hell.
"The Last House on the Left"?
"A Clockwork Orange"?
I can't think right now.
I considered Clockwork Orange, and even though I find it disturbing, its really a diffferent kind of disturbing. I think I may describe it more as 'unsettling' that the there are no redeeming qualities about the main character, very unique film.

you people are amazing. although i have seen most of the films you recommended, it only compliments your taste. A lot of people say Salo, but i think that has a lot to do with the ban. i liked the film. for its' era, it did push the envelope. but it didn't make me question my values. I Stand Alone shook me to the core and bravo to everyone who watched it. And I don't know you mister zoobot, but Ingmar Bergman is my number one favorite director of all time. I love Cries and Whispers. I love all of his films. After Wild Strawberries, I could not stop obsessing. And finally, eddy, have we met? I am embarrassed to admit it, but the super-hollywood Hills Have Eyes remakes scare me more than anything has ever done before. i walked into those movies after my boyfriend promised they would cure me of certain biased fears. They Did Not!! I cannot talk about what i fear most in that entire series of films but they should be banned. i can watch faces of death, Julien Donkey Boy and nameless others but this haunts me. i am in awe that eddy knew The Hills Have Eyes and Requiem affected me like they did. i pride myself as a hard bitch, but those films found my weakness. well played. Titus was also amazing and I do like A Clockwork Orange but the book surpassed the screenplay. Has anyone here seen In My Skin, and if so, what were your thoughts?
intense movies here. and we may have met before. but probably not. in a lot of ways im a pretty big pussy when it comes to movies. pretty weak stomache and i scare very easy. i mean, pretty much every horror movie will sare me. except for DEAD SILENCE, that movie was too funny in an absurd way. but movies like SAW make me want to vomit. liked the first one though but have no desire to see another one. first, because i thought making a sequal ruined everything that was good about SAW and because the previews almost made me vomit. HILLS HAVE EYES is a step above most recent movies in its genre in my opinion. its shot super well and that bass noise, fuck. gives me the shiver me timbers feeling just thinking about it.
by my skin do you mean mysterious skin? cause that movies is unreal. fucking intense but also beautiful at times. very good stuff and joseph gordon-levitt is always awesome. but its been a while since i watched it. but i have fond memories of it. well, fond memories of that movie isnt really the right way to describe what i mean. but, you know, its something, that film. if you didnt mean MYSTERIOUS SKIN than i have no idea what youre talking about.

though Mysterious Skin tops my must see list, I'm actually talking about the film In My Skin, director Marina de Van, who also starred. This is the very first film that allowed me to witness people actually walking out of the theatre. I have been compared to the main character, Esther. It used to bother me, but now I take it as a compliment. Every lover of in-depth, independent film should see this movie, wait a week before they post and then write their opinion. It is that profound.
Un Chien Andalou is classically disturbing, people ran out of theatres at the time. Hard to create that kind of shock now. (Which was an element of Rant, I thought. You?)
More modern and psychological is Betty Blue. Nobody has run, but it will make you sad, and think.
I remember a long time ago reading about a foreign film about a woman who got sexually aroused by cutting of pieces of herself. I think at one point she amputates her leg.

yeah, I think that was the film I was talking about.

I LOVED Mysterious Skin. Also, Blue Velvet was very disturbing, and pretty much the only David Lynch film I really liked. Him and Dali are a little too weird for the sake of weird for my taste.
perfect blue: Bergman is #1 on my list too. Persona kicks my ass all around the room and makes me like having my ass kicked.

I felt that way when i saw The Happening. I thought the concept for the movie was okay, but the execution was terrible. The acting sucked, and there was absolutely no suspense. Everyone around me laughed the whole time and kept asking "...Is this supposed to seriously be scary?" Whereas the old couple in front of me kept turning around and giving us dirty looks. I mean, maybe it's just me, but I don't think the line "Why you eye-in' my lemon drink for?" or an army guy exclaiming "Cheese and crackers!" when he's afraid of trees, really belong in a 'horror' story.
Either way, I don't approve of this M. Night Shamalamadingdong movie.

this actually made me laugh.
and, yeah, nothing could save that movie. not even godzilla.

I keep hearing about this lemon drink business like its a travesty. I guess it's only bad like, 'you had to be there'.
I suppose so. The old lady was just creepy, and nothing really made sense. "Ooooh, the emo-toxins are going to make you kill yourself!"
*Okay so, the whole concept is people have destroyed the planet and the trees are fighting back; creating some kind of gas to make peopel kill themselves.* Anyhow, a family is riding in a jeep, and the dude in the front seat looks at the ceiling and sees a hole in the roof, and for a whole five minutes it's this dramatic music and him staring at this hole in the roof. Then, the driver rams the jeep into a tree. Which subsequently makes the passengers in the BACK SEAT fly out of the windsheild, while the driver and the dude next to him are perfectly okay. After which, the dude in the passenger seat gets out of the car, sits down, and slits his wrist with some of the wreckage.

Hahaha, good (:
And I agree. Apparently the couple in front of us rather enjoyed it. However, they were old and probably have terrible taste. I think what bothered me even more than the movie was when teh old dude kept turning around and telling us to stop laughing, as if we were being too loud. Then, he'd start coughing up a storm, like tuberculosis is totally something you bring to the movies with you. :|
That night was just bad. hahaha.

sounds like something a character from a stephen king novel might say.

Dans Ma Peau. I had totally forgotten about that film. From what I recall it was pretty fascinating but I remember my boyfriend at the time hated it. Can't remember why. Yeah my memory is quite bad.
You should definitely check out Mysterious Skin, I saw it fairly recently and I thought it was great, and very different to his other films.
i've seen all of Araki's films and Mysterious Skin is close to being my favorite. although, at the premiere, there were several people in the theatre that were definetely there for the wrong reasons and it was somewhat uncomfortable. i am completely at a loss when it comes to Smiley Face. this is not what i expected and sincerely hope that Gregg makes a comeback.
