Wherein we call someones biggest accomplishment into question. To start:

Did Russel Crowe really deserve his Oscar for Gladiator?

i don't remember who else was up for one the year he won, but I woulda been pissed if I was one and he beat me out of it for that role.

Of the other nominations, I have only ever seen Cast Away. Not sure Tom Hanks' acting was any better.

Did sean Penn deserve his Oscar for Milk over Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler?

Did Slumdog Millionaire really deserve all of its awards?

Did The Departed deserve the best pic Oscar? Where they just giving it to Martin Scorsese for all the times he was snuped before? Was Raging Bull snuped for the best pic Oscar? Is the Infernal Affairs trilogy better than The Departed? The first one was good but the sequels suck, and The Departed features the two good ideas that where introduced in them.

Did Pulp Fiction deserve the best pic Oscar over Forest Gump? Isn't The Shawshank Redemption superior to both films?

Did Gladiator deserve the best pic Oscar over Traffic?

Are the Oscars all the cracked up to be? What makes them better over The Golden Globes, BFTAs, Grand Prix, or Palme d'Or?

Did Fahrenheit 9/11 deserve the Palme d'Or over Oldboy?

Is this 'mumblecore' core movement really any good? Are people mumbling they're way through a two hour film really entertaining? Doesn't the lack of script make some scenes overlong, the entire film unfocused and lack cohesive dialogue throughout that will overshadow over the 'everyday' humor it tries to dramatize?

Is Citizen Kane even remotely a good film? Does it deserve all it accolades? This ones easy. No, no it does not. Its not even worth the film it was filmed on.

Citizen Kane deserves everything good that has ever been said about it. It is my favorite movie.

Departed is an awesome movie. Pulp Fiction is genius.

But I agree that The Wrestler should have won something.

hm, I never saw Gladiator. But I would say the role of John Nash was pretty amazing. That was the year of the black oscars though, so he never had a chance at beating Denzel. Not that Denzel didn't deserve it, he was good too. But I think Crowe's role was more impressive.

You'd be surprised how many people claim Citizen Kane is the greatest movie all time who never saw a bloody frame of it and those who have and tried to convince me it is the 'greatest film of all time' just paraphrase the same crap over and over; it was innovative, and some variation of that. But if want to ramble on and on over how...... Now what exactly it was good at again? Was it poor characterization? Kane was angry because he had no childhood or was he rebellious or was he careless? Why did he seem to destroy himself later in life, since more relevant issues lead to his demises? Why would having no childhood make him constantly fail at marriage? Wouldn't he seek a mother in a wife and want her to baby, not berate her. The other characters, well they were.... in the film. The pace, not even being there. But no, its the greatest film of all time, because it was innovative. Its cinematography was gorgeous. Good cinematography does not the film any good!!!

Every. Single. Movie. has taken from Citizen Kane. That movie of yours? The one that you think is the greatest of all time? If it was made after 1945, it owes a lot of it's existence to Citizen Kane.
If it doesn't hold up over time for you it's because every single frame, idea and concept has been re-used or stolen from Citizen Kane to the point where it's become cliche and blase'.
Citizen Kane is the greatest film of all time the same way Babe Ruth is the greatest baseball player of all time. Sure there's plenty of other great ones, even ones that may have surpassed it, but it's the single one against which all others are judged.

I had forgotten how good Russell Crowe actually can be.
As in "Romper Stomper", "L.A. Confidential", "The Insider", "A Beautiful Mind" and maybe "Cinderella Man" - don't really remember it too well.

But I don't think Gladiator was an Oscar worthy role, Well I guess it can become a bit weird depending on what the actor's up against. The Marisa Tomei Oscar for "My Cousin Vinny" comes to mind.

The Oscars have always been about popularity over quality. That said, Wells was not terribly lovable.

Also, people talk of Marissa Tomei's Oscar (and no, she didn't deserve it), but we often forget the Golden Globe pretty-much openly purchased for Pia Zadora by her very very rich husband.

To a certain degree. It's kinda ridiculous though, that comedy never will be taken serious. A huge Comedy star will probably not be winning an Oscar for his comedy performances. But in a way I can understand that. McDonalds will never win any Michelin stars but the food is damn popular.

It's some kind of unholy compromise.

What's weird is how they always say that Comedy is much harder to play than Dramatic. So if someone is able to make you laugh your ass off they should be getting oscars over someone that can only die onscreen to generate some cheap tears.
The Three Stooges should have more Oscars than ....hmmm... i can't think of anyone to say that has a lot of Oscars. But you catch my drift.
I was going to say Tom Hanks, but he started out in Comedy too. so that kind of destroys my whole thing.

I don't know much about Kurasawa, but I bet he had seen it and it got his artistic juices going for when he started his own film career.

I thought of him when I wrote "for his comedy performances".. Jim Carrey seems already to be on the same road, Adam Sandler tried a "Magnolia" aswell.

Handicapped or being persecuted or a combination seems to have a clear advantage to Oscar's at least. But I don't think Will Ferrell is crying himself to sleep. It's just a bit odd.

i dunno, i really liked gladiator, there really was nothing wrong with it, until that woman at the end went all super saiyan 2 on everyone in the arena, but i thought he did fine as the spaniard, as for the other movies that were out, i have to agree with the other poster, i didnt really see any of them, so i would say yeah, i think he deserved the award for a movie well done, it might not be the best or worst movie of all time, or even the year, but i think it should be recognized as a movie worth watching

Yes............only because everyone else in 2000 was crap.
Look at the Oscar line up for that year:
Gladiator
Chocolate
Traffic
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
and ... Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
I mean, c'mon, with 90% of other films being chick flicks or badly acted horror movies (e.g. Final Destination), WHO ELSE WAS GOING TO GET IT?
So, in the context of 2000, he deserved it. In the context of film, probably...not.

p.s. I never watched Citizen Kane because I know the ending through reading countless reviews and summaries of the film, and hearing many directors and actors talk about it. Therefore, watching a movie for the first time when I know how it ends, and all the tricks used to tell it kind of blew it for me.

See thats the problem with everyones point of view, they're always so grounded and realistic. Why can't the most absurd idea be the most accurate? Think for it long enough, like thing so hard it hurts and you start question your existence and reality, you realize that one idea is as absurd as another. The simple truth of the matter is that you can't truly debunk anything since you only experience everything through your own eyes. What makes you think that the world isn't playing a giant cosmic prank on you? or maybe I really I'm just as crazy as the doctor say? I liked Traffic a lot except the parking lot scene. So much unbelievable things going on when they decide to walk instead of using the car filled with explosives. I don't really buy that "the experienced assassin" would try and run up to them with a gun at that point. 1 vs 8? And on top of that another assassin is there to shoot the first one right there and then.

I don't know, that scene kinda threw me out of the movie for awhile but other than that it's a good movie.

What makes you think that the world isn't playing a giant cosmic prank on you? or maybe I really I'm just as crazy as the doctor say? But then again they can't talk now that they have no tongues mawhahahaha. Wow its really difficult to come across crazily menacing on the internet. Whatever.

OMG, ever wondered if people see colours differently from other people? Like if your red is actually my blue? That's crazy!

OMFG, have you ever wondered if, when you fall asleep, the world just stops existing until you wake up? That's crazy!

OMFGROFLMAO, have you ever wondered if "knowledge" is actually impossible because we can't KNOW that we know something? Holy crap, that's crazy!

I like having him around. You can't have everyone just agreeing with everyone all the time. Needs some conflict in there. Plus, some of his ideas are so goofy that it's easy to debunk 'em!

See thats the problem with everyones point of view, they're always so grounded and realistic. Why can't the most absurd idea be the most accurate?
