Hey all, i've recently finished reading choke (loved it), and recently read that panic at the disco's song 'build god, then we'll talk' has something to do with chuck.

Wikipedia says, 'The song's title originates from a quote in Chuck Palahniuk's novel, "Choke".', but i can't find that quote, or anything even close anywhere.

Is the quote at all grounded in choke? or is panic at the disco on crack.

I think Panic at the disco is ruining Chuck's work with their crappy music.

Wish I'd thought if it first.

I hadn't heard of any of their songs being named after Choke quotes, but one of their songs has a Survivor quote.

Oh my God! There's a band referencing Chuck's work? Panic! at the Disco?

I don't believe it. I'm sure I would have read of it somewhere before now. I will assume you're making stuff up to pretend to be a super chuckfan.

did you know there's a band called "survivor"?

fucking ripoff artists.

they are shitty so that made me throw away my chuck books because that's how it works. bad things pollute good things and make them unbearable.

man, if you rip off ironman like that it will totally ruin the appeal of his original posts just like the way panic ruins chuck's books, just like the way gross-tasting banana candy ruins actual bananas.

I quite like Panic! At The Disco if i say so myself.
I can't be bothered to write this myself so i pasted off wikipedia.
Many tracks on the album reference works of Chuck Palahniuk:

"The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage" — the title of this song is a line from Palahniuk's Survivor
"London Beckoned Songs About Money Written by Machines" — the line "Just for the record, the weather today is..." is a recurring phrase in Palahniuk's Diary
"Camisado" contains several references to "Fight Club: A Novel" by Chuck Palahniuk.
"Time to Dance" is entirely based on Invisible Monsters
The title of "Build God, Then We'll Talk" is a quote from Palahniuk's Choke

I once ate some Frosted Mini Wheats that had ants in them. I didn't know this, of course, until I could taste that awful taste, and smell that horrible smell. Long story short, it was very tramatic and disgusting and now, everytime I eat Frosted Mini Wheats, I can taste the ants.
I just know, that the next time I read Survivor, I'm gonna get that annoyingly catchy song stuck in my head.
While this doesn't diminish the quality of Chuck's work, it does take away from the experience I'm having while reading it.
So gross-tasting banana candy, can ruin actual bananas.

I probably should have said something along those lines with my initial post in this thread.

Either that or...
FIRST!!!!!1!

Luckily for me, the one or two Panic! At the Disco songs I have heard have convinced not to listen to any other crap they spew and refer to as music, and as such, I am not overwhelmed with the same burden as you, Squeek. Sorry about that. Someone has to suffer so the rest of us do not, though. Think of yourself like Jesus, and think of Panic! At the Disco like sin, and think of Choke like existence/reality/(G)od. We can all enjoy reality/god because you are bearing the full weight of our sins. We can call you "King of the Muzzaks"

It only took one or two Panic songs to convince me I didn't like them as well. But it didn't convince my co-worker who absolutely loves them and plays them often.

"Milton, I know you're allowed to listen to the radio, but I was thinking, you know, personal favor. Could you maybe turn it down, just a bit?"

I've also heard a few songs by various artists/bands that are titled "Brandy Alexander". I'm pretty sure the one by the Walkmen is a reference, but does anyone know for sure?

Why does this website have THIS many references to Panic At the Disco?

Can I go anywhere without hearing the names of their overly-long, plagerized, song-titles?

Drop them. Just leave them alone in the pile of dog poo poo.

yeah, thats me... the explanation isnt short, because I like to ramble... sorry for those disinterested... feel free to skip this post if so inclined!

It is a Buddhst tattoo. The wheel on top is an 8-spoked wheel, which is often used as a symbol for Buddhism itself, representing the 8-fold path. It is also used as a symbol to represent the Buddhadharma, the teachings of the Buddha, and also used to represent the Buddha himself. Underneath it, in sanskrit, is "tathaagatagarbha." Tathaagata is one of the names of the Buddha (it literally means "thus gone") and garbha means "womb" or "embryo" so together they mean "Buddha embryo," but the word is more generally translated as "Seed of Enlightenment." It is the Mahayana belief that all sentient beings, irrelevant of their form, have the capacity to become Enlightened beings.

Underneath that are two lions, holding it up. Lions are often considered the royal protectors of the Buddhadharma. Also, the Buddha's first sermon was called the Lion's roar, which woke people up. They are often see underneath the throne of the Buddha holding him up. In this circumstance their iconography is based on 13th century statues that were constructed by King Asoka in India, who was a famous Buddhist King who ruled almost all of what we now call India.

Lastly, underneath the lions, it says "prajnaa" on one side and "karuna" on the other side, again sanskrit, meaning "wisdom" and "compassion," which are two very important concepts in Buddhist faith and practice. You cannot see them well in this picture, but you can in higher res versions. I guess for me they kind of serve as labels for the lions... Kind fo like Wisdom and Compassion are these two pillars of my practice, that are protecting and supporting it, and for me, the idea of tathaagatagarbha is a beautiful one, it speaks to the interconnectedness of life and the fact that nothing is higher and nothing is lower, a mosquito can become Enlightened as can a King or a monk, and Wisdom and Compassion uphold, at least in my practice, that ideal.

A brandy alexander is a drink made with brandy, creme de cacao, cream and nutmeg, NOT a name invented by Chuck Palahniuk.

Though I'm not a huge fan of Panic at the Disco I looked into the whole "Palahniuk" correlations because I was interested, and I think "Nails for Breakfast Tacks for Snacks" references Choke more than any others.
Just a thought.

Their obsession with Palahniuk seems to be nigh prophetic. No one seems to have joined up because of him for quite a while either.

They've changed their sound dramatically. They've gone from singing about whores and drugs and cockroaches to singing about wine and rabbits and sunsets.

I take it you're being sarcastic because many of their songs are easy to relate Palahniuk novels.

Actually totally the opposite, one of their songs NAME is a survivor quote "The only difference between suicide and martyrdom is the amount of press coverage" from Survivor. And the song is about Survivor although not everything the song says can be related to the book.

But that's not the only song of P!ATD that was inspired by a Palahniuk book, even if it is the only one with a title being a direct reference or quote.

There's "Time to Dance" with it's lyrics that are completely based on "Invisible Monsters" there's even a pre-chorus that says "Give me envy. Give me malice. Give me your attention" which is a clear reference to the photographer inside the main characters head would say "Give me___" and then a flash would go "flash". "Give me lust, baby. Flash. Give me malice. Flash. Give me detached existentialist ennui. Flash.

There also "Build God, Then We'll Talk" which can be barely related as one of the characters, Denny, was building something huge, and it was once used as a metaphor from how we can't live without an explanations to things like, God. Some say "Build God, Then We'll Talk" is a direct quote, but that's a lie.

And there's other that are supposed to be based on Fight club and Diary, but I can't seem to find similarities in those.

I'm glad you say you like them despite the fact that most people here just hate them here. But I'll have to correct you on some things

First I have read Choke three times, and the third time was no longer than a month ago so i can certainly tell that no matter what anyone or any site says, "Build God, Then We'll Talk" might be a reference but it is defiantly NOT a quote from the book.

And Second, I've watched the movie and read the novel Fight club several times and I've heard the song "Camisado" various times, also, and I can safely say that I see/hear/read no similarities between the song and the novel/movie, despite the fact that the chorus says something about fights. In any case I can believe "Camisado" is based on Invisible Monsters, as well as "Time to dance", and it might be base on the chapters where the main character is in a hospital.

Yeah. The title is half of a quote from Closer. And then the next song was the rest of the quote.

"But It's Better If You Do"

I think so. But it's just funny because back then I couldn't relate to a single fucking thing in it.

Now, maybe. One or two things. I actually don't want to watch it much because of that though. Maybe when I feel like being brought down.
