Californication - starring David Duchovny
Yeah the apartment episode was a return to what made the first season so great i thought. I hope they go back to that for season 4. I laughed the whole episode.
The third season seemed to be mostly about back Hank into corners just to see how he'll find a way out.
isn't that what Californication, in general, is about?
I guess you're right lol. But the first and second seasons also had a longer story too. Like the first season had the exploits with Mia and getting Karen back. The second season had Lew Ashby and holding his relationship together. The third season has nothing like that really. There are a couple time it tries, but doesn't really come together like the first or second. The fourth season will be the decider if this show will stick around. I sure hope it does.
i'm still looking forward to it!
i've heard a few people say it's a shitty season, bar the finale. but fuck that. it's Hank, therefore; it can't be shit.
I never said it was a shitty season. I just said that it didn't have the feel of the other two.
If you like the bracelets that he wears, this place has almost the exact same ones. He wears a bunch of different ones through the show - but they all look really similar. This place has 2 of the studded ones he wears and some of the other ones. I've bought stuff from them before and the stuff is quality.

i am refusing to open that link on the grounds that it it has the word "urbanwrist" in it.
It's all leather bracelets... Like all handmade stuff. It's good shit!
but it's URBAN!
comeon!
okay, okay. i'll look.
The owner is super cool too. When I email - he almost always emails back within an hour. And super fast shipping - like usually a couple days. (Although I'm not sure about Australia...)
Peter has been urging me to post here, so I am.
I watched all three seasons last week, so I'm pretty new to Californication. Basically, I hate Mia and anything relating to her. I wish Hank would get it together for once (this is how I felt while reading the Chinaski stuff by Bukowski, so I guess the writers of the show did a great job).
As for the season finale of season three, I don't know why in the world Becka would tell her father that she had sex. I know that they're close, but still. It's just awkward calling attention to your sex organs around your family members.
I feel bad for Karen. And I feel bad for Hank, even though a lot of it is his fault. I want them to live happily ever after. Marce and what's his face are getting annoying.
I don't feel like season three was of lesser quality than the first two. It was kind of a mixture of the first two, like all of the unresolved problems came back. I'm so eager for the fourth season to start.
I've always hated Marcie and Runkle, they're irritating as hell.

Please call me Pete
(or were you trying to be cute? lol)
I can see what you mean about the 3rd season seeming like it was a mixture of the first two. But there was no book. There was no real thread tying anything together like in the first two seasons.
I know I've already stated it, but I feel this fourth season is gonna make or break the show.
And I really like Marcie, I find Charlie annoying. But Marcie is funny.

I'm naturally cute. And I will call you Pete from now on. I just didn't know which you prefer.
Yes, I agree about Marcie. I like how direct and honest she is, and how she doesn't care about being feminine or polite, she just does or says what she needs to. Charlie is obnoxious. I did, however, greatly appreciate his slag tag.
Slag Tag? What's that?
The only thing I liked about Charlie - "I'm the king of fuck mountain!" lmao
Sorry. Due to my exploits last year I got used to British lingo. It's just a tramp stamp.
Oh yeah - his tattoo is hilarious!
lalalalalalalalalalal!
the fuck you on about mate?
(I imagine that's how you would have said that Matt.)
yeah, but i would've added a comma before 'mate', mate.
hahah, good call though.
it was meant to be me skipping through all posts saying, 'lalalalalal, not listening!'.
Hey! I'm learning. lol
Okay, okay. I've now seen season three. So let's talk about it and speculate on what may or may not happen in season four.
It was obvious, even as early as the pilot, that the hole fuckig Mia thing was planted there to come back and bite Hank on his dirty old ass, but in a way I still wasn't ready for it. I just want Hank to get it together so badly that it breaks my heart to see that shit happen to his pathetic ass right when shit was getting good.
I thought Hanky baby was gonna kill that mofo at the end, for real.
Now, is it just me or in season three when Runkle spells out 'divorce'--you know, when him and Marcy have the people over and they are disgusted by Marcy's tampon clogging up the toilet--does he spell it: d-i-v-o-r-S-e? Yeah, with an 'S'. What the fuck?
And I fucking love that little speech Hank gives to falicia (or how ever you spell her name) about how all women have aomethingnbeautiful about them. It's so true it's heartbreaking.
This show is fucking great. The first season is the best though. You can tell they had a bunch of ideas and then in season two kind of lacked enthusiasm, or couldn't come up with as good material.
That quote is one of my all time favorite quotes. It sums up Hank better than anything else that has ever been on the show.
That quote is one of my all time favorite quotes. It sums up Hank better than anything else that has ever been on the show.
i know, right?
i thought you'd like that one, Pete. i wanted to tr and actually quote it, but i can't find it on the internets, albeit i'm not the best internetter in the world.
maybe, i'll just pop on the episode and type it up when it comes. i think it's in episode two or three.
it not only sums up Hank, but i think in a way, it's a very Bukowski thing to say aswell and it hit me because i've always thought like that. granted, i'm not lik Hanky-boy with my relationship (luckily for Nat) but still, you can dig it, can't you, Pete? you know what i'm trying to say.
I dig I dig! haha
Sadly - I have to say that I HAVE had my Hank moments. I've felt exactly like he did when he said that. I have fallen in love for the night and said things that I shouldn't have. But sometimes it just seems right, until the next day and you realize you're still alone.
dude. i have done that a million times over. i meant, i haven't with Natalie. but before her, yeah.
in the second season, hank's dad says somethingvery similar. in that flashback episode when he dies. he says something about falling in love with every woman he has ever been with.
Oh yeah I remember that!
it's interesting because if i remember correctly, Hank was quite disgusted by this statement, even though that's exactly what he does. maybe season three is a sign of Hank getting a bit more in touch with himself.
fuck he annoyed me in season three though. it was funny and everything, but fuck, the dick got his dream girl. sure, she is in NY, but doesn't mean the ass can cheat on her. fucking dickhead. and karen attitude towards his cheating is so fucking annoying. how could she not care that they patched things up and now he's in LA fucking anything that moves and has a vagina again? idiot. i makes the last episode all the more heartbreakin' though. Hank's shit finally caught up with him. it's gonna make for an interesting fourth season.
oh, and, Pete, you know in the start of the third season, when Hank visit Runkle in his new office, and they're talking about how no one wants to buy his new book? well, what fucking book? couldn't be Lew's bio, because from what Lew said, he already had a deal for that. so did he write something else?
also, i though in the first season it said something about GHUA being his debut. but then in season three they're talking about South of the Border and Seasons in the Abyss as tough they came before GHUA, so, what the fuck?
Wasn't Rick Springfield funny as hell on this last season though? I think he should come back but he probably won't.

i was suprised he played 'himself' and really degraded 'himself'. i was also suprised that he was in it so often. i thought it'd be a one scene cameo thing.
also, i thought it was funny that everyone referred to him as 'rick sprnigfield'. his full name. no one ever calls hims just rick. what a douche.

I think that was the point to make himself seem like a huge douche. He may or may not be like that in real life.
Thinking back what he did has already been done by NPH too.

I think I watched the third season two or three times. I always assumed they were talking about Ashby's biography. You know shows mix stuff up all the time like that. I don't think it was that major of a mistake if that's the case...
Also GHUA was the book that got him famous. But he was writing and selling books before then. At least that's how I understood it.
interesting.
i always had the idea that GHUA was his debut. maybe they meant debut fiction, and the other ones were non-fictions? not that it really matterss, but it's just kind of annoying when there's holes in the story like that.
and as far as the book they can't sell being Lew's bio goes, i don't think it could be that book because he also says in the same scene that the ashby money only went so far.
ha. maybe i'm just being a creep and looking in to it way too deeply. yep. probably that.
another little interesting thing i have recently been tuned into: all of Hank's books are Slayer songs. a buddy of mine that is into thrash and all that (i think that's what slayer is) was telling me about it the other day. he also got me wondering if hat was planned or not because he told me how Henry Rollins is a Slayer fan, and if you remember season one the episode "LOL" where rollins is a radio host and interviews hank, well, in that episode he also mention hank's other books "seasons in the abyss" and "south of the border". we were talking and he thought maybe Rollins clued onto the God Hates Us All reference (maybe it wasn't an intentional reference initially) and said maybe rollins just improvised a couple of titles based on other Slayer titles. hmmm. something to ponder.
and while i'm on the music topic; how's how Kapinos must be obsessed with Warren Zevon. there's been bunch of his tracks used on the sondtracks and then there's the references in the dialogue. my favourite was the crossword hint when he's in bed with the redhead. "five letter word for an excitable boy... Zevon" or something like that.
and. i think season four airs over your way in september. excited? i'm gonna need to work out a way to watch it because i don't think i can wait after the end of season three. and i doubt it will air in australia this time. they went from a good sot in season one, to real late at night for season 2, to only showing like two or three episodes of season three and then it was off.
anyone care to anticipate what might happen? are there any trailers out?
Carla Gugino, who has been in a bunch of great films, including Sin City, American Gangstar and Watchmen, will be playing Hank's much needed lawyer in season four. so that's pretty cool, 'cause she's a babe.
evidence, that is still safe for work, i think:

she is really hot ! i liked this show for so long and i finally stumbled on this thread...
where did you read that stuff about carla gugino??
i just googled 'californicaton season four' because i just finised watching season three for about the third or forth time and i'm getting ansy about season four.
and i found this article:
http://www.buzzfocus.com/2010/04/15/carla-gugino-brings-entourage-flavor...
and also, i just found getting this link for you that Rob Lowe, from brothers & sisters, is going to be another guest star. he'll be playing a famous hollywood actor that is a contender to play the role of 'Hank Moody' in the film adaptation of Fucking and Punching, which hank is writing the screenplay for.
sweeeeet.
another thing i just found: this girl will be playing an actress. i'm guessing she may be the actress that would be playing Mia in the Fucking & Punching movie.

i'm getting too excited about this new season. wait til Pete reads all this!
Matt - all of that information is on the Californication Wikipedia page.

There's also a lot more cultural and musical references.
The titles of Hank's novels named in the show are taken from the albums of the metal band: Slayer. These are: South of Heaven, Seasons In The Abyss, and of course the main novel in the show, God Hates Us All. Charlie also stated that the bathroom of his house was the only place that had been spared of his and Marcy's "Unholy Alliance", or the only place they had not had sex. Unholy Alliance was the name of a tour by Slayer.
Twice in the first season, the wait for Hank's new novel is compared to the wait for the latest Guns 'N Roses album, Chinese Democracy, which took over a decade to be released.
Referenced in the Drake song "Say Something" where Drake says "lets sit and drink wine and watch californication"
The music of Warren Zevon also plays a significant role in the series. Many of his songs appear in the show, including "Mohammed's Radio", "My Shit's Fucked Up", and "Keep Me In Your Heart". Steve Earle's cover of "Reconsider Me" makes an appearance, as does "Don't Let Us Get Sick", as performed by Becca Moody's band. There are also nods to Zevon's music in the characters' dialogue, including the phrases "Life'll Kill Ya", "Porcelain Monkey" and "Excitable Boy". In Season 2, Hank Moody describes his ritual for finishing a book as "whiskey, weed, and Warren Zevon." Also, in the Season 3 finale, the GG Allin version of "Carmelita" plays in the opening scene.
Harry Chapin is also referenced in Season Three. Episode three is titled "Verities and Balderdash" which was the title of a Chapin album. The tenth episode is entitled "Dogtown" which was the title of a Chapin song. "Dogtown" is also a reference to the part of Santa Monica, CA, where skateboarding originated. The Dogtown and Z-Boys cross logo is also spray painted on the wall outside of Hank's apartment.
So he is writting the screenplay for it after all???
i can't wait to see how all that mess is going to play out...!!
How many minutes into season 4 before he bangs the hot lawyer you think?
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
I say that the show opens with him doing it. And that's how she's introduced. Like this:
Hottie: Now that was good. What are you doing later?
Hank: I'll call you. I have to meet my lawyer.
Hottie: Really, what time?
Hank: Uh, all day.
Hottie: We can start the meeting early and then we can go out to dinner.
Hank: Wait... What!
Hottie: Hank Moody, meet your lawyer.
Hank: Is this going to cost extra?
I think Pete writes for Californication.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
No, but I am obsessed! haha

hahahaha. pete, you're hilarious!
but, in saying that, i would not be suprised if this is how the show begins. and i welcome it!
but i think hank will be in the big house at the beginning, won't he?
oh, and thanks pete. fuking wiki. should've just went there. fuck.

they missed the Werewolves of London song of Zevon's that is in season 3!

Can't you just go ahead and edit wikipedia? If you can - you should add it in.
so, i just finished watching season three all the way through...again. it was sort of for research, to see when Hank's redeeming qualities shine through and what exactly they are. because ultimately we should hate him, but for some reason he breaks our hearts over and over because we're rooting for him so hard.
anyway, the last episode still gives me chills and tears and makes me crave season four so badly.
question for the hardcore: do you think that it may be at all possible that the cops pick hank up for assault, not statutory rape? because after he belts Mia's douchetastic boyfriend (which was such a fucking gret walloping, wasn't it?) he says he's calling the cops. but mayb he could be calling them for beltig him. sure, it makes sense that he would dob him in for both crimes, but maybe he really does love Mia, and maybe she could convince him not to do it. who knows?
Maybe Hank gets himself yet another get-out-of-jail-free card. maybe he confesses to Karen--which is so good because she needed to know, deserved to--and that's it. and then Mia convinces Hank to write the screenplay to the book and everyone lies happily ever after. Mia gets to have a one hit wonder and fade into the background like the proper mess she is, and Hank gets to have some credit for the book that took him over 10 years to write.
but can Karen forgive Hank. and Becca. these are the big questions.
