Blues
I picked up a harmonica last month to try and learn blues harp. Anyone enjoy similar music? A few bands/artists for anyone interested...
Satan and Adam
Muddy Waters
Sonny Boy Williamson
Little Walter
James Cotton
Howlin' Wolf
Bobby Rush
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Chris Duarte

Susan Tedeschi is a great blues musician. She plays the guitar like a demon and has a ridiculous set of pipes on her.
I'm partial to Son House.
I've played the guitar for over half my life. If you want to learn any instrument - you start your learning at the beginning.
I think for the blues harp - Muddy Waters is an excellent choice.
I have a ton of good recommendations but I have to check my external harddrive which is at home. I won't be able to do that until tomorrow afternoon. I'll be getting back in here then.
Ain't nothin' like good old fashion N'awlins rhythm and blues either, particularly along the lines of the stride piano of Professor Longhair and James Booker. Can't wait to see "Treme" on HBO.
If that's the stuff you like, you should check out R.L. Burnside. Some of his music was redone for the movie Black Snake Moan.
Otis Redding
John Lee Hooker
T-Bone Walker
Lonnie Brooks
Miles Davis
Jim Morris
Otis Clay
B. B. King
A. A. Bondy
The Black Keys
I love blues. I think we had a similar thread before...
"...you want to be truly unselfish? Love someone or die for someone. Those are the only good deeds you can perform without any hope of personal gain."
i loves me some blues. and i actully play the harp myself, it's my favorite instrument, out of the few i play, to play, and probably my favorite insrument to listen to, too.
check out Paul Butterfield, he rips on the harp.
there's some good stuff in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, too.
Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes plays a pretty mean harp, but only on a few selected songs. if you can, check out the songs: Ozone Mama (off their album Lions), Been a Long Time (off their latest album ...Before the Frost), P25. London (off Amorica, not a big harp part, but it sounds wicked good.), Movin' on Down the Line (off warpaint, but try and check it out on the warpaint, live version; it's extended) and Mellow Down Easy (a Willie Dixon cover that appeared on their album Three Snakes One Charm, but check out the live version that's on the Live Album/dvd Into The Fog because for some reason he doesn't play harp on the album verion)
The Allman Brothers Band have some amazing harmonica work happening. and they're just well worth listening to, really.
Rob Plant plays some pretty sweet Harp in some Zep tracks. You Shook Me from Zep I, in particular.
obiesly Mudd Waters.
and again, obiesly, Bob Dylan.
that's for harmonica, and just off the very top of my head. i could go on and on and on about blues and blues influenced music.
i'm listening to a ton of Derek Trucks Band at the moment, he's an amazing guitarist and his band i incredible. definitely, highly recommended, by me.
oh, and check out this dude; his name is C.W Stoneking. he's from Melbourne, Australia. and he's incredible. he plays Blues, Jazz, Hokum, Jungle music. seriously. outrageously good music.
sorry for parkaring your arse with three videos in a row, but his band really excites me.
oh oh oh, and if you like them, you may very well like this band. they're locals around my parts and really, really cool cats. they all live on this little commune. it used to be a bowling club, and now tey all live in there. they have a studio and invite people around for jams and vegen chilli con carne. they're true gypsies. i used to hang out with them a fair bit when i was semi-homeless an busking for a living. Mojo Juju & the Snake Oil Merchants:
I approve of this thread.
I love the blues, and I always find there is so much more music out there. Not that he played harmonica, but I've been on a huge Robert Johnson kick lately.
I can second most of the artists named here, but there are a few new(ish) even to me. For the moment, I'll just suggest never listening to Blues Traveler.

seriously, Tony, check out the videos i posted.
Robert Johnson is incredible.
also, Seasick Steve. amazing hobo.
and, R.L Burnside.
and for jazzy stuff, Dr. John
Matt - we have the same taste in books, the same taste in television, and the same taste in music. You make me sick. If only you played guitar or I played harmonica...
Wow. Dr. John. Seen him in concert must be about fifteen times now.
Not blues, but from Australia, and definitely rockin': Yothu Yindi. Was just listening to "Garma".
i do play guitar. been playing for about 8 r 9 years now.
we're soulmates?

i don't really dig Yothu. i've only really heard one song of his, it was kind of big in the 90's here. not sure of it's name though.
we have some great blues and rock n roll bands here. i could really spoil you guys with some delightful tunes.

Probably "Treaty" about Aboriginal rights. Not their best, by a long shot, musically. Try "Silver Owl".
yeah, it was Treaty.
i'm just not into that sound, huh. i should feel bad, but i don't.
no homo
the fuck you on about?
the fuck you on about?
I forget you're in Australia Matt. You probably don't have the expression/term there. lol
When a friend gives you a compliment or a bromance remark - you have to follow it up with "no homo" so it doesn't sound gay. It's just a joke.
oh, ooh. all right, man.
soooo, Pete, we should strum our guitars together into extacy, while you simultaneously blow my harmonica.
no homo
did i do it right?
hahaha YES!! But way over the top. lmao
i do play guitar. been playing for about 8 r 9 years now.
we're soulmates?
LET'S MAKE SWEET, SAD BLUES MUSIC, PEOPLE!
No really. I play guitar [and kinda sing] also.
Because you're a woman you don't have to say "no homo." lol
I think it would be awesome to jam with you two.
oh, hell yes.
i would be so down for this jam. it gets lonely jamming by yourself all the time. damn ocean blocking my way!
and, i just wanna bring up here, because i read it said in another thread, somewhere that i can't find, and i wanted to post it then, but i was running out the door or something (wow, does that sentence make any sense...nope, probably not); i'm loving that you're hanging out more, especially around GD, Pete. it's great getting to know you, and we seem to like so much of the same stuff. i think we might be soulmates.
bromance. no homo.
I'm jealous and I do love the blues but I'm not very learned in that department.
So we will schedule an epic CULT JAM SESSION!!!
And in this epic jam session we have to have a moment where we introduce everybody. I always think that's cool when bands do that. "Over on the lead ax we got Matt Screechmaster ODonnel. And bringing up the rhythem keeping it all together we got Little Miss Ska Ska Scrappy MCrapey"
And yeah - it's fun getting to know things about you guys other than what books you're reading.
Mississippi Fred McDowell, an example of the blues that I like.

Matt the two middle videos of the four you posted aren't viewable in the States.
Franc - That song is sweet. I love the old Mississippi blues.
oh, really!?
that sucks. they're from this australian t.v show, hosted by probably the most respectable australian radio station, JJJ, or triple j. the have a segment called Like a Version, where they hve a band on and ask them to do a cover version of another song, in their own style. it was just a video of Stoneking doing Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. he plays the banjo and has a little horn section, it's heaps funny, too, because he said he'd never even heard the song until 3 days prior to playing. the other one was just a live version, on that same tele show, of one of his favourite songs of mine. it's the best video i could find.
seriously though, did anyone dig him? the Jungle Blues song?
Jungle Blues was really weird buddy.
It reminds me of some of the stuff that Les Claypool has done. Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel or something.
it reminds me of my favourite disney movie: Jungle book.
weird as in good, right!?
For harmonica, Sonny Terry & Brownie Mcghee. They are more folk blues than some here in this thread, but they are still amazing.
Plus, they were in The Jerk w/ Steve Martin!
