Best films by genre
Couldn't sleep last night. Was lying there thinking of the films that really got to me, and the various genres. So, here's the question: You're going to an island. You can bring 10 DVDs. Here are the categories. GO.
DRAMA
COMEDY
ACTION
SCIFI
HORROR
FOREIGN
MUSIC
DOCUMENTARY
MISC - two more of any
BONUS: one boxed set
Mine:
DRAMA - so many, but American Beauty always comes to mind
COMEDY - Caddyshack makes me laugh like no other
ACTION - I'm going to say Fight Club, it is probably more drama but screw it
SCIFI - Blade Runner hands down
HORROR - Blair Witch really freaked me out
FOREIGN - Amelie really resonated with me
MUSIC - The Doors, always touches a nerve
DOCUMENTARY - I'll say any Michael Moore (Columbine/F911/Sicko), skewer me if you want
MISC - Seven really got to me; Memento I think was very compelling
BONUS: LOTR Triology, done well from start to finish
What really effected you? What could you watch today? What film have you watched the most in your life (think mine is probably Blade Runner, but maybe Caddyshack).

Genre's checked through internet, so fuck you The Prestige is scifi.
DRAMA: Match Point
COMEDY: Hot Fuzz
ACTION: Apocalypse Now
SCIFI: The Prestige
HORROR: Psycho & Dawn of the Dead
FOREIGN: Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources
MUSIC: The Blues Brothers
DOCUMENTARY: n/a
MISC: Pulp Fiction & The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
BONUS: The Godfathers.
On this note we've started looking at Film Noir in school and my teacher couldn't have made it more boring. We looked at a trailer for Blade Runner and she murdered the whole plot in a minute and called Deckard a typical Private Investigator, Rachael a typical femme-fatale and some other six year old shit about shadows and evil. Eurgh.
Misc: Heathers.

oh man, I love that movie. I tried to convince my friend Jared that he missed a touchstone of the 80s by growing up and never having seen it. I don't think he believed me, I never could get him to watch it.
These picks are the first that come to mind now, I'm sure I'll think of different ones later.
DRAMA - The Usual Suspects
COMEDY - The Princess Bride
ACTION - Spartacus
SCIFI - Spirited Away (does that count?)
HORROR - The Evil Dead
FOREIGN - Pan's Labyrinth
MUSIC - This is Spinal Tap
DOCUMENTARY - nevermind Microcosmos, its all about March of the Penguins!!
MISC - Tombstone, The Last Unicorn
BONUS: Its actually not a movie, but I would have to go with the Planet Earth documentary series box set. It is amazing.
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."

We both put This is Spinal Tap under the music genre , though someone is going to come along and yell at us for not putting it under comedy. I was going to put it under documentary just for kicks.
But yeah, Heathers is genius.
Man, some great ones. Apocalypse Now of course. Jacob's Ladder (I'd almost put in Angel Heart here now, instead of Blair Witch). Seven Up, got to start watching those, heard so much about them. The Wall was 2nd to the Doors. The Jerk. That's in my top comedies for sure. Usual Suspects is a great drama. And Heathers - a cult classic, very much a touchstone/lodestone. SO good.

I think there should be a mockumentary category, then Spinal Tap can go there and leave the music open for something more profound... like Amadeus.
Oh shoot, I forgot The Prestige, oh and Children of Men. (EDit)
I've not actually managed to finish Children of Men yet. Everytime I watch it something happens. I will finish it one day.
And everyone keeps going on about Heathers, so I want to see that soon as possible. I'm thinking if I want to do a film then whilst I'm in school is pretty much the best chance I'm going to have to get away with a teen film. From what Heathers sounds like I definitely want to watch it.
Franc, fantastic post. I knew you'd expand on it. Looks great. Not only more categories and more "foreign" but each decade. Knew you'd do that. You are king of all of filmdome.

GREASE??
*keening and gnashing*
There are lots of foreign films I like. By foreign films I take that to mean foreign language films. Not films made out of this country. Also, I totally feel superior for seeing La Jetée when I was about fourteen, thirteen maybe. Near my fourteenth birthday. I want to see it again sometime, I'm sure it's about on the internet. Now that I'm a little older, wiser, a little better at French. I know it's like la j'etais now too, spoke about that with my french teacher when we watched french films, actually I want to get more into French cinema. Franc, I'll send you a PM for advice.

Don't get me wrong, I love music, and I like most of the bands you mentioned, I've just never seen any music themed movie or musical i actually liked. How come you quoted the shawshank redemption part?

Haha, sure, if anyone wants to take an extra documentary, there's room in my bag
Documentary - I need help here please!!!
I watched a documentary a few years ago about a guy who would find abandoned war planes, fix them, and then fly off with them and take them home.
The subject of the doc was a plane in Antartica, I think, and he was having trouble fixing it and in the end someone on his crewed died trying to make thi thing happen.
It was a mind blowing story, but for some reason did not get the name of the film, and have not seen it since.
I think I originally saw it on IFC. Not sure though.
That is the best doc out there ever...
There's no such thing as perfect writing, just like there's no such thing as perfect despair.
Haruki Murakami
I saw Micheal Palin's Pole to Pole is coming out on DVD
That's a pretty good documentary.
the yes men is good, and the corporation.

That's pretty damn cool. (As does Angelina Jolie).
Pretty similar tastes in movies too, from the looks of it.
uhh lets see
comedy-Friday the original
action-Blood Diamond
Horror-Saw 3
some other ones training day,the machinest, pursuit of happiness, the bourne identity, and of course fight club and clerks 2
Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, and Dawn of the Dead are the greatest films of all time, not to mention classified (by me anyways) as black comedy. The greatest genre ever.
Maybe Dawn's more of a drama, but close enough, the comedic stuff is what sets it aside.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
DRAMA ~ Donnie Darko
COMEDY ~ Snatch and/or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Love them both equally)
DRAMA ~ Donnie Darko

And here, I was starting to like you.

Meh, I didn't see what was so special about it. I guess I was expecting more. To each their own.
You'll just have to do something to regain my respect.

The rest were satisfactory.

And be ridiculed by some asshole for my selections? No way.
Damn, why didn't I think of that before posting mine. Gah, oh well. I'm sure there are some people on this forum with good taste in movies. :D
