Battlestar Galactica
Anybody else here seen this show?
I just finished watching it, and although it had it's flaws I think it's a great show overall. I like it's ambition, they took some big leaps over the course of the series and it's one of the few shows where I didn't want to know what was going to happen, so I'll break my discussion down into seasons to avoid giving too many spoilers.
I haven't seen any of the movies or the webisodes. I was a bit confused when I rented the first season and the first episode started with a voice-over saying 'Previously, On Battlestar Galactica...'. I was fairly easy to figure out the score though. It seemed like a sci-fi version of Deadwood, focusing on how people forge a society under great pressure. I don't actually remember much about the first season, I might go back and watch it at some point.
SEASON TWO
I really, really loved season 2. That was when it all took off for me. There were some pretty great story arcs, particularly the two 'balance of power' storylines, the first between the military and the civilian government and the second one about the conlflict between the rule of Galactica and the rule of Pegasus. Then of course the final episode blew me away.
SEASON THREE
I thought this series was a bit disappointing, apparently the network asked the writers to tone down the long story arcs to attract more viewers, and it didn't really work. A lot of people have written about the first few episodes, when they're living under Cylon rule. That was pretty great but it felt rushed, I would have liked to see more of that, they jumped right into the 'suicide bomber' thing without showing much about real life under cylon rule. The season still had some good episodes, like the one with the cylon virus (although that felt under explored too) and when Baltar becomes a sort of communist icon.
SEASON FOUR
Season four was a bit of a return to form, especially when they found Earth to be uninhabitable, leading to the badass mutiny episodes.
The end of the series was so-so, damn cheesy when they jumped to modern day.
Anybody seen the Razor or the Caprica movies? What do you think about the prospect of a prequel series?
!
Muffet 2 does not want.

This is why we can't have nice things.
I mean, check out the thread Kirk posted Planned site maintenance: This coming weekend I posted it here for you convenience, emphasis is mine:
Hey guys,
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. This coming Friday night (Jan-30-2009), shortly after Battlestar Galactica, the site will be coming down for a whole bunch of upgrades. We expect the site to be down for the bulk of the weekend.
Though we don't anticipate any data loss, we suggest that you copy anything that you absolutely need, just in case.
Kirk
Ha! That's hilarious, I wish I could have scheduled my work around my BSG viewing!
!
I watched the first couple of seasons on DVD in a marathon that left me burnt out and exhausted. I couldn't return to it.
Massive spoilers:
I really enjoyed the show, loved the arc and even the one off eps like the unions ones, showing that there were still class problems even with these guys. But I felt that they really let it down with the ending. All this build up of caprica/baltars visions and Starbucks possible strangeness and it's explained as angels? Urgh. Still, overall it was a great show & I'm going to watch Caprica. Razor is well worth a look, too.
"What cha readin' fer??"
SEASON TWO (AND ONWARD) SPOILERS-
I remember an episode from (I think) the start of season two, when the president and one of cylons were on Cobol looking for the temple that would point them in the direction of Earth. The cylon told them that the cylons knew a lot more about the human gods than they did, and that although they did exist they weren't The One True God. At that point it seemed like the whole series would take on a kind of Stargate aspect, with aliens acting as gods to lower species. That didn't seem to come to pass. Although apparently the series didn't really have any sort of forward planning, so they might have changed things as they went along. The 'angels' aspect was a bit weak though.

"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."

There can be only one.

I am a big fan, as has already been noted.
The Caprica pilot is out now, and I was really skeptical going in. Turns out, it's really fucking great. As a prequel, they have some interesting stuff to explore. Especially the evolution of the Caprica Cylons. Any odd, check it out. Added bonus, if you like topless women, there are many of them in it!
There is also another movie called "The Plan" that is supposed to be out in the fall. From what I gather, it is basically the first 2 seasons of the series, only from the Cylon perspective.
Some of the non-planning I like - Ron Moore realised from forums the fans hated Anders, so instead of him being a minor role who disappeared, he kept him in the show. (Anders was the only fit bloke, so hey, good news for me.)
Other stuff was a bit more scary, like when hey said they sat around and had to figure out who the final five might be, they read forums for who was speculated to be one and then picked the ones less pseculated on (like Tigh was always seen as no chance).
"What cha readin' fer??"
and what was up with that 'Daniel' stuff that they threw in at the end? I'm guessing that when they started hadn't decided that The Final Five would be so significant, so they called the Boomer model 'Number Eight'. Then in the final season they had to back-track and invent a number seven and explain why he hasn't been around.
!
Yeah I thought that one was funny
It's still a very entertaining series, but I guess I'm still looking for someone who writes arcs like JMS did with Babylon 5. That was serious script plotting skills.
"What cha readin' fer??"

Oh man, wait till Dennis and Kirk see this thread. They're fiends for it.
