Fuck no.
I don't think any bands should be huge. My favourite bands enjoy enough success to keep them alive, and that does them fine. By huge I'm assuming we're talking about having every b-side with a music video in heavy rotation on some shitty TV channel. No, I don't want that for any band I like. I want them for myself, I don't want to share them with a whole fucking world full of television critics and fat people who have three-piece-suites and televisions in every room in their houses.

If you want a list of albums I'd offer to someone who asked me for some recommendations in music, then feel free to ask me. But I'm not going to sit here and even think about sharing them with the world. Fuck no. Not to mention the shit company they have here. Kids talking arsery about famous bands that they're convinced are deep underground rockers. Meshuggah for fuck sake. I've got a magazine with an interview from them in 2003.

I hear you on this a little bit. I'd like to believe that the reason they'd become huge is because their music moves others the way it moves me, instead of becoming huge for the the way they were marketed, but that won't happen. People's taste in music is just too diverse. And then some people are just consumers. I know a guy that won't listen to anyone I'd reccommend to him unless they've sold at least 10,000 albums. Won't even give em a chance unless 10,000 other people give their approval. Sheesh.

Anyway, I like these guys. Well, their newest album anyway.

Not sharing some band that inspires you is at best petty selfishness and at worst a form of self-censorship

that is the exact question that this thread posits

the only reason I can see for this is if your afraid of a band you like getting similiarly trashed, which, again, is ridiculous. no one's going to like everything, this thread is not some official list that is going to be enforced by Billboard magazine in the upcoming year.
you wouldn't hold back from posting about some book or author thats made a difference in your life so why would you do it with a band?

No. Meshuggah are a huge band and have been for a while. Half of the bands listed here are huge, that's my point. Especially the listed metal bands.

Anyway, a list of albums I think you should all give a listen. They're not uber underground rare bands, but have all sort of slipped short of mainstream success:

Circle Takes The Square: As The Roots Undo
The inside booklet says: "In a nutshell the concept behind the songs was to document the different points on a path to self-realization. In our interpretation of this journey, the wanderer ends up essentially in the same place that he or she began, if not humbled and even more overwhelmed. In a sense the ending is somewhat tragic, but without experiencing all of the lows how can anyone ever appreciate the amazing subtleties that this world has to offer? And so, if the search for beauty and understanding is cyclical and unending, then at least we'll never stop experiencing the thrill of the hunt." And from long instrumental sections to spastic drumming frenzies, it's a great album. Definately read the lyrics whilst you listen to it. It's a novel put to music. If anybody wants a sample track just ask.

Tindersticks: Tindersticks (Second Album: 1995)
On 'A Night In', a simple little drum beat starts off the song. Then comes some basic keyboard chords, and then - wow - a voice. Leonard Cohen pales in comparison. And whilst you're marvelling at this voice, you fail to realise the subtely picking up violins in the background, and the bass, and then a guitar, and before you know there's a crescendo nobody saw soming and you're thrown into an amazing piece of rock music. Slow, but majestic, and not the slightest bit cliché. Tindersticks are the band, and their second self-titled album shouts that name better than any other. Definately worth a listen for everybody. Again, anbody wanting a sample track only needs ask.

I'll provide more later. I'm hungry now.

I just don't like you. There's lots of people on here I think are intelligent and cool. You aren't one of them. You're just another kid with long hair and wallet chains and black t-shirts that thinks they're a real rebel against the system. Please don't take this as an insult, I make premature opinions about everyone. Please feel free to show me different, or just don't care what I think. Also, try not to call me a 'dick', it's a shitty insult, and you there's a whole host of better ones I think would be better suited.

And on topic, I don't think The Decemberists could ever have too many fans.

I think it's a little sad that more people haven't heard Catawampus Universe (formerly Red Fly Nation). I knew them from the Lexington scene in the early 90's. They played here and in Cincinnati and Louisville, cut their own records, never got a big deal or national attention of any kind, and broke up before the internet became a major new force in promoting bands. You can hear some of their tracks from the following link. Especially, check out the tracks called "Cannabis Dub Generator" and "Soul Connection."

Warning: This is funk/regaee/hippy-pothead jamband music, good for a mellow, world-hugging groove and not designed to appeal to your cynicism or aggression.

i am not here to insult you- dick is a word i use for the way you treat people.

another kid? youre sixteen! youre one of those kids that just sits at his computer all day trying to impress people with your infinitely superior intellect while holding his cock in his hand and a jar of vaseline on the desk.
you remind me of myself at your age.

i dont have long hair. im not rebelling by wearing what i wear. i wear what i wear because it is comfortable and practical.
steal toed boots for work.
army jacket for warmth and pocket space.
wallet chain for weaponry.
dickies pants have scotch gaurd and rip stop and will last a decade.
black band t shirts- i like to wear t shirts, and the bands i listen to dont make t shirts of any other colour.

im not here to impress anybody. i came here thinking that there would be interesting conversations to be had. so far ive found more here than anywhere else.
but ive also found you.
what point is there in impressing anyone you dont know?
what point is there in impressing anyone through the internet?

get a life, kiddo.

I'm not talking about impressing anyone, I simply told you the impression you had upon me. As for your view of me, well, it was a good effort. I should saymost of my day is taken up by looking for a job, not masturbating which to tell you the truth I would prefer. But other than that, I am not too fussed on your opinion. You've already proven to me through a load of posts you know nothing about music, yet still steadfastly declare your views, so yeah, you're just an idiot. However, I do think it's something that after the first time people called you out on your idiocy you didn't run away never to return.

first off, youre the only person on here to call me an idiot, yet.
second off, what is it that i have said that makes you think im an idiot? because i bashed metallica? because i like metal? because i dont like myspace? tell me, please. im curious to know.

im not going to back down until you can prove me wrong.
im doing this in a thread rather than in a pm session because i have nothing to hide. im not going to profess who i am, but im not going to hide it. if you want to move it, just say so.

You two need to calm the fuck down. It's the internet, for chrissake.

I'm sure there are enough intelligent people here to have established this fact already, but as far as a majority of bands that I think "deserve to be huge" go, what should be meant is that I wish more people would get an opportunity to hear their music, not just the local scene.

That being said, there is one band that I feel got slightly robbed in the past. Harvey Danger had a fairly shitty single, "Flagpole Sitta" or something like that. I thought it was okay, but after the first 73,000 times I heard it on the effin' radio, I'd had just about enough. I think the song and their name got burnt out. About a year or so ago, maybe, they released another album, one that they gave away for free on their website. They have the general philosophy that music is free and if you think it's good enough, if you want to hear more, pay the artists for it. I didnt' buy their first one, but I can almost guarantee that this second one (or whatever number it was) is a gazillion times better. One of these days I'll get around to buying the album or sending 'em some money or something. Maybe.
