bands that are huge and shouldnt be
It's not that he's too old to dress that way, but really, it's a dated look with the scraped back hair and wraparound shades. It is possible to look like a "rock star" without entering into aging lothario territory.
Three points to end my post:
"That's a very clever post, and funny too." Ouch.
I have nothing against the earlier music of U2.
Don't ever do a google image search for the word "Bono" and if you must, don't look at page six.
God U2 is awful.
So is Blink 182.
And all those Fall Out Boy and Panic!ATD type bands.
Spice Girls should never have broken up. They were good. I'm serious.
I was just going to post Blink-182 and P!ATD... they're horrid.
Blink can't sing, and barely play their instruments...they might have good lyrics, but i can't hear them due to their shoddy singing voices...and Panic just steals their lyrics from various other sources, which people tend to think is 'cool,' or 'deep,' or whatever...instead of what it is- plagarism.

No no, I meant it. I'm just a soul whose intentions are good.

Bands like this represent the prepackaged, ready-made, late-90's commodification of "alternative rock." Bands like U2 and REM invented college rock/ alternative rock and sound exactly like themselves (and not too much like each other) instead of sounding like the hoarse representatives of an undifferentiated alternative stew. How could midas, or anyone, lump them together? I think I'll blame the Spice Girls.

If a band puts that much money into marketing and manages to get a load of idiots to buy their album, then they deserve to be huge. The universe is eternally fair, only people are too afraid of insulting another person to admit that.

We agree, the harder you work, the luckier you get.

The only problem with this diagnosis is that it marginalizes the discussion of artistic and social merit and reduces every other consideration in favor of commerce. Following this logic, KISS is a great band. They made truckloads of money out of showmanship and marketing savvy. Thousands of better musicians labor in obscurity and never become known to the world and never become financially successful. I'm not saying boo-hoo, and I don't hate KISS for being mediocre musicians who minted a fortune out of their costume and makeup wearing antics. I'm just saying, successful marketing is not the bottomline relative to the discussion we're having.

is it one of those rotten.com pics of Sonny after hitting the tree?

Good question. A link would be much better than a Google search suggestion. Not only do all sorts of things come up on page 6, but the exact items that hit that page will change, as the search rankings change, from day to day.

i agree that slayer is a pretty shitty band, but they did more than most people realize.
celtic frost directly influenced so many bands, ranging from opeth to nirvana.
black metal was never about playing fast. look at any real black metal band- old behemoth, mayhem, marduk, et cetera- none of them play fast, they have very slow, melodic, moody sounding riffs that instill odd emotions in you.
what do you mean by venom being "fake?" eviscerated carcass is a fake band. where are you getting your information, one of your other recess yard buddies?

No, it's a picture of a few elderly men. Just hanging out, FELLATING EACH OTHER!
Bands that I might defend if I had the patience and energy:
Pink Floyd
Nirvana
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Bands that I don't particularly like, but could see why people think they deserve their fame:
Metallica (to a point)
U2
Bands that just suck ass:
The Rolling Stones. Seriously, who the hell gave these people a record lable? They had a few good songs. I'd even listen to one or two voluntarily. But a majority are nothing but repetitive shit. It needs to stop.
On a related note, I think I saw an interview with a young Mick Jagger once where he said something like "if I'm still doing this at the age of 50, shoot me."

Oh, I agree. I'm just saying that a band who manages to market themselves successfully deserves to have their CD's sold. Also, if they don't write good songs, they deserve to go down in history as money-grabbing twunts.
As for skill, well I think bands like Converge and The Dillinger Escape Plan are wild, but they've both got large followings and I know Dillinger had some music videos on MTV2 last year.
THE GRATEFUL DEAD, horrible horrible band, and people think they're valid, these geezers are always calling up the gallery trying to get free booking and think i'll be impressed when they say they're similar to the dead, you couldn't say anything worse except that you have a classic rock cover band.
Whoever said Pink Floyd . . . uhh . . . I don't know . . . fuck you. That's all I got.

Coldplay
Boring, boring, boring music. I've given them more than half a chance to impress me, but they don't. There are bands out there that I don't like, but I can at least see why other people would like them. I can't for the life of me find the appeal of this band. Each song sounds exactly the same. Bens Fold Five had at least one catchy melody.
I'll admit I have no idea what he's singing about. It could be something really profound. But great lyrics don't matter to me if everything else about the song is so bland.

My younger daughter, Mo, she uses 'boring' as the ultimate pejorative. It started when she got a dose of some really bad tasting medicine awhile back: there were three oral syringes of it, and the first, she cringed and said, 'Hello, boring.' After the second, she said, 'Boring, boring, boring.'
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.

I don't use the word boring a whole lot, but that is the only word I can find to describe Coldplay. I suppose I could have gone with monotonous, pedestrian, ponderous, stodgy, stuffy, tame, tedious, tiresome. But even those words aren't as "boring" as the word "boring." Aren't as boring as Coldplay.
And that's a cute story by the way, "Hello, boring!"
HA!!!

Nickelback
Hinder
Metallica
Any teen band or pop shit
3 Doors Down
Creed
Tons More! Just tired of listing.
"goddamn you, coldplay, and your easily listenable music!"

Yeah, I aggree with the Creed thing. I've never seen the appeal of that band...
I think a lot of this ill feeling towards U2 has something to do with Bono. He a bono fide tool.
Mr. Vox, you are someone's father. button your shirt up and get a haircut!
That's a very clever post, and funny too. Also, I think you're right that it's tough for people to separate Bono's personality and politics from the music. It's hard to love the latter if you don't at least respect the former.
but really, must we get into ageism? If I had Bono's job, I wouldn't let being past 30 stop me from dressing the part.
