Band of the 90s
So what band would best represent the 90s?
My nomination: Smashing Pumpkins
Runner Up: Nirvana
Smashing Pumpkins!
Pearl Jam?
I don't like them, though.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
I'd say Nirvana. Though Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins are definately in the top 3.
I'm not the biggest Nirvana fan, but I'd have to say that they best represent the 90's. Well, the part of it I remember anyway. Runner up, just cause I love 'em so much, would have to be Sublime. RIP Bradley.
Yeah... Kurt Cobain's 6 chords are awesome! Woo!
I have to give the title of "Band of the 90's" to someone with musical talent.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
I don't understand this thread.
Best band that existed in the 90s?
formed in the 90s?
ended in the 90s?
had their entire career happen only in the 90s?
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
Existed, I guess. But the others are taken into account, too. The more they had happen in the 90s the better, I guess, heh.
Ian - So you chose Pearl Jam? =\
Then the answer is obviously Radiohead.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
Dammit. Then they had to end in the 90s.
I would also add Built To Spill, Weezer, Sunny Day Real Estate, Nirvana, The Pixies, Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins. Tori Amos put out Little Earthquakes in '92 and that's a solid CD. Beck was also a pretty strong 90's figure.

Too late, I already made a good cotrbution to this thread based against that. Stop changing the rules.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
Damn you.
uhhhhhhhhhhhh radiohead.
Then again, I might be wrong.
God dammit, Radiohead's the easy answer and they're still around.
Argh, I should have made it clear in the beginning I guess. Feck.
I understood disx. That's why I said Smashing Pumpkins.
No matter what you think of them, it was Nirvana. It's a no brainer.

well, to answer this... it needs to be said in parts... 'best band of' is a transitional thing- moving in time with the drugs and the mood of the people so.
early 90s...
Primal Scream
Stone Roses
just after that...
Nirvana
95-96
Smashing Pumpkins
97-98
Radiohead.
end of 90s
thats a fucking mystery to me.
its prolly that slag Kylie.
life's pretty straight without vidalia :You_Rock_
I think Wes' post explains it the most.
P.S. I'm ignoring Will's and Kitty's posts do to the post I just made in the Flame Warriors thread.
yeah, but wes...you have to pick one.

No. It was in response to Kitty's "Damn your eyes!" if that helps at all. Another hint: Think Mel Brooks. Ah hell, I'll just post the answer since you're the only one playing the game with me. I'll post it further down so you can ignore it if you want to.
Young Frankenstein
I love that movie. Gene Wilder is such a great actor/person.

nae kitty, listen.
thats my point.
its not like there was a 'Beatles' of the 90s.
every year, or 2 years was different enough in mood/culture/drug use/attitude that the primary band- if there ever was one, was always changing.
god bless pr and marketing!

NO YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE!! ::stomps feet::
i'm just kiddin'. i don't care.

I'd definately have to say Nirvana. Just for the fact that they completely turned the music industry around and knocked it on its ass. Plus, Nirvana was the very first rock band I got into (and got into heavily) so I'm kinda biased.
However, I would have to agree with Wesley in that there was no "Beatles" of our generation. But I will say this. Had Kurt not committed suicide, can you honestly say with a straight face that Nirvana couldn't have filled in that slot?
Besides that, my runners up would include Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and Rage Against the Machine.
There, my two cents have been thrown in...enjoy.
Suck me beautiful...
nobody has mentioned NIN...so i will. they are the band of 1994 thru 2000 for me at least.

Jesus Christ I feel retarded! Thanks for remembering insomno, I'm a little slow.
Suck me beautiful...
Considering Radiohead has had two cds come out post-2000 (about to have a third), I just don't see them as a 90's band.
And yes, I think Pearl Jam has talent, disx. I don't like them, but I can respect them.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
so you can respect pearl jam but not nirvana? how come?

Because Kurt Cobain has no talent.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
um...could you...i don't know...back that up with some reasoning?

He represented two elements of a band, and he was horrible at one (playing guitar) and very average at another (writing/singing songs).
Sometimes I wonder if he realized he was playing the exact same 6 chords over and over in each song? The picking wasn't good either (look at "Rape Me" or "All Apologies" to find that out). I own three Nirvana CDs, and I can honestly say I don't like all but maybe 3 songs.
Kurt Cobain was horrible. He was lucky to have Dave Grohl backing him up as a drummer.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
i see. and very knowledgeable people both inside and outside the music industry admire him so much because...?
and eddie vedder is a better singer/guitar player/songwriter how...?

These "very knowledgeable" people also have sucked the proverbial dick of many other bands who were horrible. The way I figure is, lots of these "knowledgeable" people fell in love with Nirvana in their teenage years when they were all "YEAH... FUCK THE WORLD! FUCK THIS! FUCK YOU!" Then, as they got older, they held onto these feelings and their love of Kurt Cobain.
And, I hate to say it, but a lot of these "knowledgeable" people say that they like Nirvana because Kurt killed himself.
Have you ever even listened to a Pearl Jam song? Eddie Vedder doesn't write stupid ballads to angst that most anybody who has ever been sad can write. Guess who did? Kurt Cobain.
I don't think of Eddie as a guitar player, because of the two other guitarists in the band who take the lead.
I'll say it again, I don't like Pearl Jam. I respect them.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
i get it, i get it. because i disagree with you about the relative talented-ness of kurt cobain and eddie vedder, i must never have listened to a pearl jam song. right. oh, and also, the people who like nirvana only do so because he killed himself. what bothers me here is that rather than simply state your point of view, you are discounting the point of view of others as ignorant or shallow, as if yours is the only respectable opinion. that sucks.
all i wanted was for you to elaborate on your declaration about kurt cobain, is all. that's the only reason i asked the questions i did. since i like nirvana and dislike pearl jam, it was curious to me that you were the other way around (yes, yes, i know you don't "like" pearl jam, but you at least respect them, etc.). i brought up the "knowledgeable people" thing as perhaps a poor way of phrasing, "if kurt cobain had no talent whatsoever, why was he so popular with people who really do know music (not just britney types who jump on the bandwagon)?" anyway, i still might be phrasing my question poorly, but my point is that i wasn't trying to get hostile about this.
i like nirvana because it was the voice of a generation. before nirvana what was there? MC Hammer? C+C Music Factory? Guns N Roses? they brought a new style to the forefront of American pop culture (here's where both you and i could spout off a whole list of obscure bands that were "better" than Nirvana within the grunge style, but none of them had the kind of accessibility Nirvana does, so that's not the point). for that, i think they deserve respect. Kurt wasn't a "great singer" (though I'd be interested to know what your definition of a great singer is), but neither was Bob Dylan. Personally, I like Kurt's voice. It's raw and gritty. Like the music. I'll admit I don't know a lot about guitar playing, but I do know that for me and many others, Kurt's songs are compelling and something we could identify with much, much more than anything that came before him.
pearl jam, on the other hand...eddie vedder has a horrible voice and a horrible way of singing, in my opinion. i can't stand to listen to it. he has a really irritating stage presence, too. and songs like "daughter" are as much a "stupid ballad to angst" as any i've ever heard.
so while i don't seek to change your opinion with regard to these two bands, i do wish you'd recognize that my opinions are as legitimate as yours.

Wow, yes... let me recognize your opinions. Let me live in peace on this message board. *gasp* How dare I get hostile about something as passionate as music? Let's not dare debate something.
"Great singer". That's a term that can be thrown around so losely into every style of music. I don't consider Kurt to be a great singer. Sometimes his voice simply seems to be droning... such as in their new single.
I don't agree with your opinion. You don't agree with mine. Neither of us really gives a damn about the other's opinion. Therefore, I'm dropping it.
Now, starting a new discussion... another good band of the 90's was Tool. AEnima is one of my top 10 CDs.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
there's a difference between debate and insults.
you have continued with the latter. there's no reason for it. if i truly "didn't give a damn" about your opinion i wouldn't have asked you so many questions about it. questions that only made you get defensive.

I might have gotten hostile, but I haven't insulted anybody except the bandwagon Nirvana fans.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.

that's pretty insulting to me.
i still fail to understand why we couldn't have a non-hostile conversation about this.

Kurt Kobain was a great artist, even though he was fucked up enough to kill himself
Artist, how? As in music?
The reason I ask this seemingly stupid question is because I've read some of Kurt Cobain's short stories and seen some drawings/paintings of his. I consider them to be very good. However, I'm not a fan of his music.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
I think that Kurt was an artist with his music. Do you not consider music an art form Ian? (dont get mad i dont mean anything by that question).
I would nominate Radiohead for best band of the 90's. They made some brilliant albums and they are still making them today.
So far though all the bands that i have seen posted here are great they all deserve a vote. Yea, go team!
You know im going to lose
Gamblings for fools
But thats the way i like it
I dont want to live forever
Yes, I consider him as an artist with his music. I don't think he is a very good artist in that respect, however.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.

Maybe I got that backwards, heh. Ah well.
