Avril Lavigne to cover Metallica at tribute
The public outcry on this is generally thumbs down, but I am actually excited to hear this. All I hear are DJs complaining and hardcore metal heads compaining and everyone is complaining, but whats the big deal? They're acting like she's going cover Battery or something out of her league and therefore butcher it. I really think shes going to stick with something a little more low key. My money is going down on the song Nothing Else Matters, which I am convinced she can good job of covering. I would also say Unforgiven, but I have a feeling that song would be reserved for someone with a bit higher status.
I seriously don't know why this sickens so many people. It only makes people sick because they love to hate her, or hating her is cool, which is ridiculous. She isn't even that bad. I'm sick of Complicated as much as the next guy, but get over it.
As far as the other performers at this tribute
Limp Bizkit - Now these guys I'm actually worried about, because I can see the band being unable to handle covering anything. Word on the street is Fred likes Master of Puppets, and has covered it in the past, and hasn't done it well. I predict a butchering.
Korn - I don't like Korn very much, but they can do this. Korn is basically heavy metal only slowed down. I think they might do Sad But True, or something along those lines.
Sum 41 - As far as music goes, these guys have it in the bag. They can be pretty metal if they need to be. I don't know about the singer though. He's a bit to flowery to handle a Hetfield growl. They will probably do one of the newer songs like Fuel.
Anyone else have any views on this?

If she's such a problem with the music industry then why is she one of the biggest sellers and writer of one of the most played songs on the radio? I can't find the exact number, but she's sold millions albums, and that's nothing to laugh at.
But saying "problem with the industry" is just so easy to say though, isn't it? It's so much more sophisticated sounding than "I don't like her, and no one else should."

Actually, I find that I enjoy watching her videos. I don't know if that translates into me liking her?
I don't really find her songs appeasing to the ear or anything. Maybe I just like making fun of her? I'm not sure. Maybe I think she's hot? Eh... not really.
If God takes life, he's an indian giver.
I have the upmost respect for Avril because she writes her own music.
Many groups, not bands, don't write their own music. Musicians that do write, and play - can't forget about playing their own music - have my respect.

I enjoy watching rap videos, but I don't like rap. So, I think visual entertainment, and (I can't think of the word) sound(?) entertainment are not linked at all. Except when it comes to movies. And I like watching her videos because she's cute, and I like the way she sings, but I don't like her music. I don't know...

you acctually beleived that
shes britany with a guitar
shes just more processed cheese
Come on, Bane. Yes, the tie thing is stupid, yes she has little style, yes she's not THAT talented, yes she's a "pop icon", but, come on, at least she can play guitar and can sing and can write her own lyrics. Plus, don't put her as low as Britany Spears. That's just too mean.
BUT SHE IS
the people in her songs she so called "hates" are the people who love her musuck (yes i did that on purpose)
Well, I can't argue with you there. Not because your right. I don't know if your right because I don't listen to her music. And I don't pay attention to her lyircs.
And what about the band T.A.T.U.? They are huge in Europe, Russia, and getting bigger in America, but they don't write they're lyrics. They just sing. That's it. They don't even play instruments. Oh well.
It's because their lesbians. That is what I believe. At least for the men and lesbian women.
I know Avril writes her own music, and I also know that they suck. But at least she IS writing her own music.
I don't like Avril, but i'm also not bashing her music.
People have different music tastes, just respect that.
NOTE: this post is not concerning just one person, it's concerning all.

lol. I was going to mention that, but I didn't know if it would go over well. I guess it did. Congradulations.
t.A.T.u. is a pop phenomenon and their manager is a genius.
Avril writes music and lyrics and does not lipsynch. Anything else you think you know are just false facts spouted by the anti-fanatics that are hell bent on spreading hate because of whatever reason.

I have more of a problem with Korn and the Limp Dick band covering Metallica. Both of those band are shitty and even them talking about wanting to cover a Metallica song makes me sick to my stomach.

Who fuckin' cares if it goes over well or not. Just post what the fuck you want. Who fuckin' cares if people didn't like it or fuckin' shit like that.
You get my shit?
.....Fuck
Did you know that Matrix, a group of writers, wrote I think five of Avril Lavignes songs. The ones that are popular. Avril Lavignes thinks she's cool because she says "Fuck" and "Shit" and drinks underagedly (is that a word?).
In reality she wears makeup, is an aweful singer, and does not deserve to be a singer. Download her cover of "Chop Suey" and you'll understand why.
I knew this thread would weed out the people who have legitmate opinions on music from those who just like to hate things and think that changing the band name (Like N*SUCKS LOLOLOLOLO) is the best way to stick it to them.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
She covered Chop Suey? Eeeeww.

That was nothing more than a joke she did at a show that someone bootlegged and pased it off as her actually trying to cover that song and failing at it miserably. It's so clearly a joke if you've heard it. Just more fodder for people hate her. rawk awn. I love how that's the number one arguement against her right along with the David Bowie incident. Oooh, you got her there!
People are acting like shes the worst thing to come around in a long time, but its really because she slots herself into a genre that people think she doesn't belong in. Funny how she sells so well when she's so bad huh? She's acutally lucky. I wish I got this much attention.
I figure if the Cheeky Girls are getting airplay and no one is commiting suicide, they can let Avril slide.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
She...wears makeup? Dear God, just burn her now.
Sarcasm aside, why does wearing make-up make her the antichrist?
Bah.
Yeah, I think Valchrist has the right idea on how to take this whole situation: Not caring.
It's not that I don't care, I just don't see what the big screaming deal is. I like some Avril songs, and I'm sick of some. I don't own the album, and I wouldn't call my self a fan. She's just an artist who is making it on the borderline, and if anything she deserves the stand out, but everyone can't stop with the deathwishes.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
I think people don't like because she, according to them, she isn't that talented, yet she made it. And they haven't. I dunno. I could be wrong.
Theres no doubt jealousy plays a huge part in it.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
Nooooo. I'm saying wearing makeup is bad. I'm just saying she thinks she has this whole "bad girl" image and says she's nothing like Britney or Chistina, yet she wears the same amount of make-up, just slightly different clothes, she hasn't [yet] gotten implants, doesn't live in a tanning salon, and hasn't [yet] posed for Maxim.
Oh and she has a band standing behind her, instead of playing in the speakers. Big fucking whoop.
I don't think wearing as much make-up as Britney is a bad thing. My brother's girlfriend wears lots of make-up(not "eeeew" amounts) and nobody hates her. She actully is quite attractive and friendly. She is writing this. Thank you.

Another good one. People knowing what she thinks! Classic!

how do you write "blaehhenhahhheheh" or the equivalent to shuddering?
anyway...
the reason avril is popular is because 12/13 year old kids like the watered down version of punk music. avril is not a punk, she has just jumped on the bandwagon of this mall pop punk bullshit that is now clouding the airwaves.
on second thought, SHE is not doing anything...she was thrust into this full force and i actually kinda feel sorry for her. in ten years when this little fad is over she will either be: working the county fair circuit, or crying herself to sleep every night wondering how it all happened.
second, i have absolutely no problem with people who don't write their own music. i hate this debate so much. look at motown, for example. most of those artists who recorded some of the greatest songs from that era had absolutely nothing to do with the writing, lyrically or musically. yet, no one says anything ever about that. my opinion is based on the quality of song rather than if the person wrote it or not.
and avril's quality is low....very very low.
as to the original topic of this thread...i used to be a huge metallica fan...which is kinda wierd considering the stuff i listen to now but whatever, i would by lying if i said that i dont rock out to a little master of puppets now and again...
my guess would be that she'll cover unforgiven because it is metallica's most easily acceptable song to the masses.
oh yeah, limp bizkit sucks
I bet in 10 years Avril's probably going to be happy that she did all the working she'd ever have to do in life and still be under 30.

not to say your taste in music suxx, but this describes Brittany Spears and the Backstreet Boys too.
Avril is a just a brat. And I don't see what the big deal is... she's no Tori or anything. Guess it's just me.

Also, contradicting myself (I do that often lol), Frank Sinatra, considered to be one of the greatest singers of all time, did not write any single line of music in his entire career.
I'm more against lip synching than I am with writing credits.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.
My problem with Avril lavigne, (or, perhaps not the girl herself, but you'll see), is thus:
Her music, i actually like sometimes (though it seems a lot of her album is ballads like i'm with you) but the problem i have with it is the drive behind her image. She isn't a skater girl. She was a country music girl before this and i really do think that the comapny she works for has pushed onto her an image they want her to follow, because it will make exactly what it has made, as Valchrist said - money! She's around because other people arew making money off of her. So i feel for her in that she may be in a situation, being someone she isn't. i mean, how often do we hearing her say in a forced manner, in the exact same way "what you're gonna get, is me". It's what's wrong with music because it is more about making music people will gladly swallow and pay up for instead of pushing boundaries, confronting people and making them think, which is what art should be about. Her music is something we can put our minds into cruise control while listening to. That's not what should be strived for, ultimately.
i still have nothing better to say

plus i'm a little miffed as to how record comapnies and song subject matter and the whole image is one of punk, when her music is clearly not - not even the diluted rock-pop-punk of later offspring or Blink. I mean, no one ever actually says she's punk, but from her dress sense (a cliched take on the current punk fashions), her lyrics and her videos and the record company pushing, we all get that general sense that SOMEONE is trying to spin her off as a punk element. Her music, which is what a genre should be assigned by, is a blend of current pop and country. Hust like Marilyn manson music is not goth, it's industrial-metal. (goth is more strings, spooky sounds and conventional singing)

I never thought I'd see the day when people were defending Avril Lavigne.

Frank Sinatra, considered to be one of the greatest singers of all time, did not write any single line of music in his entire career - leonardshellby posted
Frank Sinatra is one of the greatest SINGERS of all time, not one of the greatest SONG WRITERS of all time. Sinatra is credited for his singing voice not for the lyrics that he wrote.
Anyways how can you people have a problem with Avril and not with Limp Bizkit or Korn. They are even bigger sell-outs than Avril is. There music sucks, they are not hard-core, Fred Dumbass is a fat lop of shit and the lead singer of Korn (cant remeber his name) is a flaming homosexual. They do a disservice to Metallica fans everywhere for even trying to cover one of Metallica's songs.

I agree with the Limp Bizkit part. I've never liked them.
Korn is debateable. I don't like them, but I wouldn't consider them a sell out. Jon's lyrics are very annoying, though.
Wow... thought we already had an thread for arguing about music.

I hate Korn and Limp Bizkit, and especcially Fred Derst(sp). But, I have absulotly no problem with homosexuals. So, unless you are speaking to one person, and you know that that person thinks homosexuals are stupid too, you probebly shouldn't say it. But, hey, do what you want.
Thank you xchuck and i do apologize if i hurt anyone feelings. I did not mean anything bad. I just want to be friends with you guys.

I understand. Your my new quasi(sp)-buddy!
BUT, I still agree with disx in some parts of his opinion of you.
"Cause she is partly what's wrong with the music industry today."
Actually, Metallica would represent that even more than she would. The whole Napster deal and such. You know, all the greed in the music industry? If there is something wrong with the music industry, it's just as much the greed as it is the 'fakeness'. So I don't see what the big fucking deal is...
I never really got the whole "let's make fun of pop stars" trend. Who cares? People scream about those who like that stuff and how they just let MTV control their lives, well, you know, you're doing the same thing, just in the opposite direction. You're letting the 'mainstream' control what you hate. Fuck, just ignore it if you don't like it. It's not that hard. I've only ever heard an Avril song once in my entire life. It was in a Taco Bell. It was sucky music, but I'm not going to go on a fucking crusdae over it.
And get over the whole "omg she's ruining the punk image!!!" thing. Who cares? Since when was the punk scene concerned about what other people thought about it? Isn't that kind of, you know, not a very punk rock thing to do?
But yeah, nice post Rip Purr, I agree with a lot of it, but I still think anyone who really hates her is pretty silly.
"t.A.T.u. is a pop phenomenon and their manager is a genius."
Agreed.
Oh yeah, and Korn and Limp Bizkit....
I was a big korn fan back when I was like 13, you know, when it was cool. Haha. But yeah, okay, I admit, I loved korn back in the day when Life Is Peachy came out and all that... Anyhow... I liked Limp Bizkit at first, too, that one CD... $3 Bill... Hey, it wasn't half bad and I was an angsty 14 year old or something. But I must say Limp Bizkit certainly sucks today. Fred's just annoying, ick. But oh well, it's not like run into the man on a daily basis or anything.. So who cares.
k here is whats wrong with avril lavigne: because of avril shes spawned bands like good charolette, simple plan, not by choice etc.avril lavigne has turned punk music into a fashion. for anyone whos read my posts ever since i started posting than youll understand that this all relates to "wanting to be popular to the unpopular. before avril, punk was about the music, now its about a look. you cant buy real punk in a store (not the music, the 'look') you useta hav to design it yourself, you had to become your own punk self. now you can go into stores like the gap and american eagle outfitters and buy your complete unorginal punk look for the low price of $79.99.

I don't agree with that. Before MTV, punk was about music. Now it's about look.
Knoxville, what's that quote from? It's on the tip of my tongue...is it Fight Club? I really can't remember, I haven't read it in a while...(sorry for being off-topic)

Cause she is partly what's wrong with the music industry today.
Otherwise, I don't like Metallica, so... rock on Korn. Rock on Limp Bizkit.
