Perhaps you guys already know this so I apologize in advance. I see that there are a lot of talks about American Dad and I think this issue is so big that it might warrant its own thread.

So I love Arrested Development, and watched it religiously every Sunday night, despite the network's numerous attempt to move the show. It is smart, funny with an amazing ensemble cast and perhaps the ONE thing (aside from Desperate Housewives) that is saving the world from domination from reality tv. It is the one FREE sitcom of its kind (think Curb Your Ethusiasm and others that are available only to HBO subscribers). Now after the debut of American Dad, there were immediate talks by the network to put Arrested Development in hiatus (not order any more episodes, which will ultimately lead to cancellation) to make room for American Dad.

I'm sorry...but what?

I saw American Dad and as most of you would agree it's LAME. It is bascally a rip off of itself. Meaning I guess Seth McFarlane sees the enormous cult following of Family Guy and decides that THIS IS IT...THIS IS THE FORMULA! Hence instead of the talking dog, you have a talking goldfish (ummmkay) and instead of Stewie, you have an alien (ummm...alright?).

I know I know, the first few episodes of Family Guy weren't so great, so maybe this will get better with time. But at the expense of a critically acclaimed show? I can't help but think of Action (Jay Mohr) which was another love-hate child of Fox that was a tad too biting and smart for the networks.

So you have David Cross going on Kimmel where he speculated about what kind of animated/reality/midget/Who’s Your Daddy? hybrid project would replace his show:

Quote:

I hope Fox puts in its place, like, you know, America’s Cutest Retards. What’s left for them to do? We got midgets trying to pull an elephant. What’s left? We’ve got orphans trying to figure out who their dads are…come on. Let’s go with retards. OK? Let’s do it

And Jason Bateman opening pleading for people to tune in on SNL this past weekend. Even cast member Amy Poehler helped as she wants to keep "things good in the bedroom" with AD cast (GOB). But Bateman knows his fate...all good show that the network pulled (ie Freaks and Geeks, Action) knows...the ratings war. Bateman has no illusions about the show’s timeslot competition, the juggernaut Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: “Who’s going to watch us when they can watch a hot, shirtless guy build a skate ramp for a kid with no bones?”

Petition to keep it on the air!

Sorry for the rant...ARGH American Dad dont kill Arrested Development with your uber lameness! Apologies to those who enjoy American Dad

Thank you for bringing this up. I'm too chicken to do it myself. I love Arrested Development very very much. I watched American Dad, because well, Family Guy is funny. As is the case with some of the spin-off shows by the same creators of a hilarious show, I was greatly disappointed.

Fox is blaming the poor ratings, but Arrested Development is the SMARTEST show on TV, and it's creators refuse to stoop to the levels of other *cough, cough* Desperate Housewives *cough, cough* shows to reel in an audience.

I read an article that gave the ratings for several Fox shows. AD is getting a 6.1, Malcolm in the Middle is at 6.4, and That 70's Show is a low 6 rating as well. It's obvious to me that Malcolm and That 70's Show have run their course. Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher have already said they aren't coming back next year, yet Fox has already renewed That 70's Show. HUH???

My only hope is that if indeed AD does get cancelled, someone like Comedy Central or even one of the other networks will pick the show up, before it goes to HBO like it probably would.

Please sign the petition and hope that someone with a brain at Fox(highly unlikely), will save this genius show.

Well if it helps, Fox has come out saying they are not going to cancel Arrested Development and they hope to have it around for years to come.
But then people do lie.
Hopefully they'll keep it on, since it i agree that's it tres awesome.

Yup you mean this? Issued within 24 hours after the fan commotion:

Quote:
Subject: RE: Arrested Development From: “Gail Berman” Date: Thu, February 10, 2005 2:30 pm To: [redacted] Dear Arrested Development Fans:

Thank you for your e-mail and your passionate support of Arrested Development. While the show has finished production for its second season, contrary to the rumors you may have heard or read on the internet, it is NOT cancelled.

We at FOX love Arrested Development and we look forward to having the Bluth family back on FOX in the future - hopefully for many years. You can help make the show a bigger success by getting as many people as possible to start watching the show this Sunday and every Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT. Sincerely,

Fox Broadcasting Company

Now that we know that Family Guy will be back on May 1st, what would happen to American Dad? Wait I guess they will just air the show separtely as American Dad is a mid season replacement right?

It appears that American mass culture wants "pop" something that doesn't demand too much head use. There's an interesting theorist you might want to read up on Adorno, he wrote this whole piece about how pop culture (he uses pop music but it can be generalize to talk about pop culture in general) is basically predigested to keep our spirits down. We work all day (assuming) and at the end of the day, we crave escape. But anything truly novel would require too much energy. Pop on the other hand is just enough of a stimuli to keep us happy...temporarily. It's this constant vicious cycle that fuels our climate of cultural deprivativity....OKay i'll stop now...

I was curious about Arrested Development because of David Cross alone, and Brak's praise of the show got me more interested in it. I think it's good so far, and Cross in particular has a hilarious character. I haven't even seen American Dad yet, but from what I've heard or read about it I'm weary of it.

Did you see last week's episode (episode 2 x 10) where Michael told Tobias (David Cross) to buy a tape recorder and tape his speech because of some interesting phrasing. I think one of them was like "I blew my wad prematurally when I went for a dry run...[etc]" And no, he wasn't talking about jacking off, but rather wad as in cash, dry run as in doing a romantic couples get a way, without his wife.

HOLY SHIT FUCK YEAH! (heh)

This week is defintely more screwball/physical comedy based, with Martin Short as the human bullet and all. After each episode, I would actually find a tracker and download them to put in my collection to hold me over til when the DVD will come out.

Awesomeness!

Wait...I just sig-ed it and it didn't show up. What the hell

[edit] this is stupid, the sig only show up for new posts?? that's total bullshit. I remembered in the past, if you sig something ALL of your posts, new and old, would have the sig. That's what a sig does! Just like an avatar. If you switch your avatar, your old posts wouldn't have the old avatar, but it would have the most updated avatar. WHAT THE...

You people need to learn something very very important: FOX HATES GOOD TV! Seriously. Good shows come on and get cancelled ASAP cuz fox sucks. All the do is throw out new "reality" shows and market the hell out of them while leaving everything else out to rot.

I hope you mean why they initially cancelled Family Guy, because Fox is bringing it back in May.

But yeah, Fox always treats its shows like crap. If you listen to the commentaries on the Simpsons collections, the guys kind of hint about how Fox treated them like crap or with hesitation even after the show esatblished itself, despite all the high ratings and money Fox got from that show alone.

I can't bring myself to support anything called HOOS, regardless of the righteousness of its cause.

Family Guy already failed once, it will again and so will this new shitfest.

Family Guy, like The Simpsons, will continue to make Fox money an grow in popularity even though they try to kill it. Like Undertow said, it doesn't make much sense that Fox always tries to destroy its cash cows.

American Dad though... I've somnabulated better puns. What an unremarkable show.

Although a travesty, it's no surprise, since FOX has the shortsighted habit of shelving stellar shows for crap and American Dad was almost worse than that reality dating show with dwarves…er, not that I watched such a thing. All those people not watching Arrested Development need a kick in the ass, too, of course. I'm just going to enjoy the show for as long as I can and hope some other network picks it up or something.
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - After several weeks of negotiations, Fox Broadcasting Co. has sealed a deal to bring back real-time political thriller "24" for two more seasons.

The network has also given a last-minute renewal to reigning best-comedy Emmy winner "Arrested Development," which has been on the bubble since the network cut back the show's second-season order in the spring because of underwhelming ratings.

Both shows are produced by Fox's News Corp. sibling, 20th Century Fox TV, and Imagine TV, the small-screen arm of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment.

While there has been a lot of buzz about "Arrested Development" getting a short order for next season, Fox's decision to pick up a full-season, 22-episode order of the quirky series, comes as somewhat of a surprise.

"'Arrested Development' is one of the best comedies on television," Fox's recently appointed entertainment president Peter Liguori said. "The decision to order another season becomes easy when you consider its amazing cast, creative brilliance, critical acclaim and advertiser appeal."

In addition to its returning series, Fox, which will announce its fall schedule Thursday at City Center Theater, will present to advertisers its new shows for next season, the comedies "Kitchen Confidential" and "The War at Home" and the dramas "Reunion," "Head Cases," "Bones" and "Deviant Behavior."
